S a pictorial monument to the friendships made and objectives achieved in all our student relation- ships at Jefferson High School do we with modesty publish and present the contents herewith. GEORGE CHERLIN, Editor-in-Chief JAY LEVY, Managing Editor PubUshed by the Seniors 0'-LL 9f' SQUJ as ,4 U3 n D' O f M TO THE CLASS OF l94O: In June this class of 470 young men will graduate from Jefferson High School. In September i937 you began three years of work which should mean much to you in increasing your amount of useful knowledge, in affording an opportunity for exploring various fields in class, in laboratory, and in shop, leading you to discover special abilities and interests in yourselves, in increas- ing your powers of critical judgment, in learning to cooperate well with others, in developing your latent powers of leadership, in imparting a strong belief in the value of the democratic way of living and thinking. He who has availed himself of these opportunities goes forth a better candidate for worthwhile citizenship, better prepared to meet the many de- mands of modern life, better able to take his place among his fellows. A large number of this class will enter the various colleges. Upon those we urge the importance of pursuing to the full, the advantages which will be at their command. Many will enter commercial and industrial fields where the shop and laboratory work in Jefferson should make their adiustment easy. These we urge to take advantage of the many part-time educational opportunities now offered in this metropolitan section. At Jefferson we shall remain always ready to help where we can. Do not hesitate to call upon us when you feel in need. To all we extend our most cordial best wishes for a successful and worth- while life. I MISS THERESA FEATHERSTON MISS HELEN BENNETT S a token of our sincere and deep appreciat' f ion o the invaluable services that they, as our class advisers have rendered us so charmingly, gracious- ly, modestly and painstakingly in a joint effort to make our student lives happy, We, the Class of 1940, do hereby co-dedicate this issue of th TEE-JAY ' e to Miss Theresa Featherston and Miss Helen Bennett. The at- tainments and morale of this outstanding company are something of which the faculty and students may well be proud. The Band is indebted to Mr. Arthur H. Brandenburg for his leadership and understanding of their problems. SCHOOL ORCHESTRA THOUGH comparatively small compared to the band, the Or- chestra does much to alleviate the discomtorts of constant study while rendering musical selections at student assemblies. Conducted by Mr. Arthur H. Brandenburg it specializes in arrange- ments of the compositions of contemporary composers. mfg? - ' I s,m2rHl I will ll I lim--I'-vu ,W MOTION PICTURE CLUB MRS. ' SOCIAL HIGHLIGHTS EFFERSONIANS and Debutants exceeded themselves in glory this year. Starting in November with the Barn Dance, the Junior and Senior Classes continued their social successes into the widely acclaimed Christmas Dance. Gorgeous decorations lent a festive color to these dances. A science demonstration in December brought Battin as a group to Jeff's auditorium for the first time in many years. The Junior-Senior play, The Flight of the Gull, whose cast is pictured here, under the coaching of Miss Helen Ben- nett in April and the Senior Prom in June promise success. CHRISTMAS PAGEANT. STAGED and coached by Mr, Clifton Hopf this reverent and solemn presentation has been an annual feature. Mr. Hopf was assisted by Mr. Arthur Brandenburg and Mr. Harold Vogt, who furnished music and chorals, and by Mr. Armand Sozio, who aided with the costuming and decoration. Sponsored by the P. T. A., the i939 production was given on the evening of December Zlst, and as a program at both school assemblies: the narrators were Robert Tomlinson and William Haines. ZJLMMZN E should like to take this opportunity to express openly our sense of obligation and appre- ciation to the many teachers and fellow-students who aided and assisted us so materially in the compilation and publication of this monumental annual of the Jefferson High School Seniors of 1940. Having foremost rights to our avowals is Dr. Albert E. Warsley who gave of his many years' experience in yearbook work the fullest in time and effort to our present annual in all the chief editorial, business and layout angles. We thank Mr. George Bartlett for supervising, with the indispensable aid of his student chairman, Herbert Vatter, the photography of every single member of the senior class. We are grateful to Mr. William Davidson for collecting and handling our many financial subscriptions. We are indebted to Mr. Peter Waitkevicz and to his student chairman, Martin Hutchinson, for the photography of and writeups pertinent to all the club groups. We are appreciative of the aid of Mr. Paul Baker and his student chairman, Robert Tomlinson, for the photography of and writeups pertinent to all the groups representing our sports. Among other student chairmen of this annual's departments to whom we are grateful for their splendid work are Morgan Clarke, who photographed all our teachers represented on pages 6 and 7 as well as those accompanying club pictures and also all the symbol shots pic- tured thereto in addition to others scattered throughout this book, Salvatore Cascone, who with the critical advice and supervision of Mr. Armand Sozio, drew up the four division pages herein so artistically, as well as the symbolic leads to the Will, Mirror and Prophecy pages for the au- thorship of which we are indebted to Stanley Berman, their student chairman. We thank student chairman, Charles Hecht, for all the typing that was necessary out- side the biographies for which we are indebted to Mrs. Edna Stokes and her classes. To Arthur Sabatino, as biographies chairman, we are appreciative for the thorough job he performed. We thank Arnold Rotsman for the splendid compilation of the advertisements and Charles Holloway for his collection of literary manuscripts. Against the best opposition, the Presidents have improved with each game, and should show up well in the County and State tourneys. ln l4 games played, Jeff has emerged the winner Five times, one of these avenging the gridders' defeat at the hands of Garfield, state champs. Five of the reverses were heart- breakers, since Jeff played good ball but lost by only a few points, to Linden, Asbury, Nutley, Bound Brook, and to Weequahic in an overtime thriller. This year's stars include Captain Johnny Clahan, Sonny Kay, Eddie Richel, Joe Novello, Willie Lape, Rip Collins, and Wallace Leary. Coach Kirkleski BASEBALL TEAM Q-LTHOUGH the varsity will include more underclassmen than seniors, Coach Kirkleski has many of experience, with numer- ous of this year's stock having earned their letter last year. An- other suicide schedule is promised, but with good material plentiful the Presidents should be able to come through in most of these. Those who promise to be this year's standouts are Norm Jones, Manny Stewart, Bill Delaney, Jimmy VanArsdale, Rip Collins, Red Manhardt, Bob Sussman, and Bobby Low. SOCCER TEAM OCCER this season saw a change in coaches, Mr. Nash taking over the duties from Mr. Baker, who has been ill. The sea- son's record can be counted successful, for, although we won three and tied two of ten games, a wealth of sophomore material wasl uncovered, Pat Gargano, Eddie Olenczak, Ernie Conrad, Ray Lut- tgens, George Skarecki, Dom Crissali, and the Dias boys, Walt and Johnny, all played good soccer throughout the season. Coach Nash Coach Hann mb RIFLE TEAM THIS year's rifle team, under Coach William Hann as usual, has showed definite signs of winning most of their matches. Prac- tice at the Armory has turned out some excellent marksmen, in- cluding Freddy Wilhelms, Bob Robinson, Morgan Clarke and Gene Pike. Having already tied Caldwell, Jeff has yet to encounter such teams as Linden, Roselle, and numerous county rifle clubs, which should provide some interesting matches. WRESTLI NG TEAM OACH HENRY DETERING has had numerous misfortunes, which have marred Jeff's grappling season. The three men counted on for yeoman work this year have become ineligible or dropped out But numerous others have been uncovered who have done nobly for the Red and Black: Carl Hann, Ernie Kindervatter, Chet Czujak Johnny Waldheim, and Von Bischoffshausen. Co ach Derering FENCING TEAM Coach Gleason X1 1-, NDER Coach James Gleason, this year's fencing team has turn- ed in good matches against stiff teams from all over the State. With four veterans comprising the team, Kirk Craig, Bob Allen, Stan Rosenstrauch, and Vic Shedko, they have all made themselves quite evident in each match so far this season. CHEERING SQUAD coach god' NDER Mr. Clifton Hopf's most able and inspiring direction, Jeff, this past season, has turned out a fine set of cheerleaders. They have each given their every effort in assisting the football team, by gaining the student-body's whole-hearted support. George Bird, Alex Matzuk, Fred Wilhelms, Artie Sabatino, and Bruce Bass were the ,boys who most capably led our cheering and singing. fl, We gm an Qewew HEN the Class of l94O passes from the corridors of Jefferson, it will leave behind it a year full of innovations and precedents. The year started off most inauspiciously, with the football team seemingly unable to gain momentum. This was more than overshadowed, however, by the bril- liant string of victories amassed by the cross-country team, which ended in their capturing the county and state championships and placing well in the nationals. The basketball team, under the leadership of our new Coach Jacobson, started slowly but soon found itself. The elections, held in October, produced capable officers led by George Bird, J. S. O. president, and Joseph Novello, leader of the seniors. Under their guidance, a series of successful social affairs was staged. Perhaps the greatest gain was in social activities. The Barn Dance in December and the Mid-Winter Hop in January were all well-attended affairs. The success of the dances is apparent by the quick succession in which they followed each other. A major event, in the eyes of those who would like to see the return of co-education in Elizabeth, was a joint Battin-Jefferson assembly, held in Jefferson. This was a huge success for all students, who enjoyed the colorful sight of girls in Jefferson. ln musical circles, Jefferson made great strides. The orchestra suc- ceeded in placing six of its members in the All-State organization. An in- novation was the founding of the All-City Mixed Chorus, made up of mem- bers of the Battin and Jefferson Glee Clubs. During Education Week, the parents of Jefferson students were in- vited to visit our school and to see various parts of it in action. A large number accepted this invitation and crowded the building. The Activity- Booklet campaign, for the third year under the able leadership of Dr. Albert E. Warsley, succeeded in passing well beyond the goal set for ticket sales. The two highest standing home rooms, llAl and llA2, were treated to the Woodbridge football game at Woodbridge. The annual Christmas Pageant was again beautifully and expertly portrayed under the guidance of Mr. Clifton J. Hopf. Other events, which helped make the year full, were: the Alumni Bas- ketball Game and Dance, other sports, headed by soccer and wrestling, and many interesting and varied assemblies. ln April, the l94O Tee-Jay will make its appearance, being the sixth under Dr. Albert E. Warsley's direction, we can take his word for it when he states that he believes it will be the best yet issued. We also await the staging in April of another successful play, so ably coached by Miss Helen Bennett. As we watch the year unfold, there is little doubt that, about the Class of l94O, can be said, They made Jefferson better for having been there.
