OUR PRINCIPAIJS MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1938: 'E EXTEND the most cordial greet- ings to this class of 450 men. During your three years of secondary school life, you have been fortunate in having available the most extensive pro- gram of activities ever offered in any school in your city. This has been made possible by your own support and the support of your parents and the general public for jefferson's varied program. The social, l athletic and educational plans have been widened almost beyond the expectations of anyone. Each member of the class has been able to find challenge physically, socially and mentally. You probably have not realized that your school has presented varied opportunities which only a small percentage of secondary schools of your country can present. The use which you have made of such advantages has depended primarily upon yourself. Each one, as a creature of his parental heritage, his social environ- ment, his school environment, has gained much or little according to what has been implanted within himself and developed as a result of his personal interest. If you have grown not only in strength and stature, but in useful knowledges, in mental development, in power of self-expression, and in character, then such a program of public education is justified. May each one go forth to higher schools or to commercial and industrial life and take his place as a useful law-abiding citizen who will in turn do his bit in these troublesome times to perpetuate his sincere belief in the democratic form of government under which we live. Sincerely yours, P. W. AVERILL, Principal. MR. P. W. AVERILL

MKURICE COHEN HOWARD REINHERZ JOHN RUPRECHT EDWARD BOGARD EDITORIAL N ORDER to perpetuate our three-year stay at Jefferson High School, we. the Class of 1938, have hereby endeavored to assemble this Annual-to assemble this tangible evidence so that it will manifest us, as well as our doings, to posterity. i It has been a source of pleasure to me in my youth: therefore, let it be a means of pride and comfort to me as I grow old is definitely appropriate to this enterprise-an achievement long to be remembered by those who have had the opportunity to compile it, and by all who have become affiliated with it in any other manner. This is by no means all we leave at Jefferson. Memories of fluctuating intensities are perhaps foremost in the associations with this graduating class: nevertheless, we feel duly proud to present this publication-the 1938 Tee-Jay. Howard R. Reinherz. FOREWORD OW the Seniors stand on the threshold of a new adventure, each one an explorer ready to venture into the unknown before him. Fortified with faith and courage, he leaves the familiar Alma Mater and sets forth on his own. Half wistfully yet ready, the Seniors stand, awaiting the time when the portals will be open and they will pass beyond the present kind but restraining hands. Beyond their present sphere lies the great unknown, where problems lie which they will try to solve. Some will act as torch-bearers and light the ways: others will faithfully follow. The design on the cover of this Annual depicts some of the paths of achievement that are open to the Seniors: some to use them as the very means of further enterprise in them: others to utilize them as their means of greater enterprise by them. Whatever their particular call, they will ever have need of the intangible weapons which their school has labored to supply: knowledge, courtesy, cau- tion and an understanding of people. By judiciously exercising discretion and by skillfully using their weapons, our exploring Seniors will be able to overcome successfully the rigors of the new life they are about to enter. John Ruprecht.
