Of a year? The drowsy mood of early morning as reluctant steps take you to school . . . the intense mood of concentration during an exam . . . the carefree, exciting mood of a winning basket . . . the uncontrolled, the exuberant mood of 3:15 dis- missal . . . the languorous mood of the rain wet pavement and soft glowing street lights . . . the in- toxicating rhythmical mood of the Friday night dances . . . the dream mood of young love . . . the somber mood of the dignity of graduation . . these are a few of the moods of a school year . . . these we will try to capture for you through words and pictures. 3 Hmmm ,gi 1 flp En. ?4wfW 0 74 ny. -n. ! His work and diligence will be greatly missed by students and faculty alike. He will always be remembered as a friend of each shy freshman who entered his class as he will likewise be remembered by his co-workers. lVlr. Jewett taught at Thomas Jefferson for thirty years. ln that time he was active in the local teachers union. In addition he was in . . Q . f his sixth year as national vice-president of the American Federation o Teachers. Just as at school he was a quiet but effective worker in this organization. 5 O lm ln his own quiet Way, with a dedicated efficiency? both in class and out of class he goes about his task as a classroom teacher of the very ' ' ' ' ' ll does finest sort. He IS never too busy to listen to a student s pro 1 ems nor he turn down opportunities to sponsor Friday night dances. As a result of his even temper and his friendly manner he is more in demand at these dances than any other teacher. Tee J ay is indeed fortunate to have such a careful and dedicated teacher in the field of chemical and physical science where the world so . Q O desperately needs WCll-fI'Ei1I'1Cd people. For these ieasons We of the 196 Monticello staff dedicate this annual to lVlr. Joseph Sklenicka. 7 Throughout this hook we shall he trying to capture moods . . . gay moods, pensive moods, blue moods . . . moods like the clear blue expanse stretching across Lake lVlanaWa in spring when thoughts turn to things other than school. w W . 1 A K V W N ' . Fanders. Confusion can be seen as Penny Stearns, Editor, runs around the room looking for lost items essential for the next deadline. Jolene Wilson, Joan Posvar, and Mary Ann Waugh are tearing their hair out as Jane Vernon, Copy Editor, calmly tells them the layouts are wrong and must be typed over. Chauffeur, Joella Kirk, can be seen driving Carol Fogle, Donna Alton, Delilah De Santi, and Kenny Wolff up- town to test their persuasive powers on the reluctant Penny Stearns merchants. Kay Conaway, Business Manager, is huddled EDITOR in a corner with receipts piled high, while she tabulates the daily figures. Speed Tobias, Sports Editor, is busy tracking down the coaches for the latest condition of our teams and their scores. The Art Department consists fo Rodelle Thompson, Art Editor, Wray Britten, Co- Editor, Sharon Gaines and Bonnie Buvak who have their antennas up trying to get vibrations for clever layouts. The staff has many riotous and unforgettable memo- ries of the many nights after supper and weekends, we pored over layouts trying to meet our deadline. Despite the few cases of home-sickness We managed to meet our deadlines with a minimum of casualties. The Pep Club works hard after school hours, to learn the school cheers so that they might create school spirit among people in the grandstands. ROW 2: Sally Latham, .losie Rodriquez, Nancy Zimmerman, Alt. Cookie McConnell. I Throughout each athletic season the Varsity Cheerleaders are constantly work- ing to build up the school spirit. Pep rallies, sending off the team, attending games, leading cheers and many unnoticed activities have helped build up the school spirit to the high pitch it reached. These girls spend long hours practicing and working out cheers. They have a strict set of rules that govern their conduct. The student body owes much to these girls for developing the enthusiasm which is so much a part of athletics. ROW 3: Karen Bailey, Carolyn Bryan, Carol Christiensen, Linda Clodfelder. Thomas Jefferson's Band, under the direction of Robert Colwell, can be found at almost any Tea Jay function. The year started out with the band marching for the foot- ball game halftimes. The Pep Band, made up of some offsprings of the band - managed to show up in some unusual costume at each of the basketball games. They added a lot of spark to the games. The Pit Band accompanied a great many of the roadshow numbers and added a professional touch to the production. The Dance Band has a touch of jazz and rock and roll which has added zest to many of our programs. The band took on concert band proportions in January and at their annual Spring Concert.AThey also attended Clinic in March and took part in State Contest in the spring. Special thanks should also go to Terry Roberts, who has served as drum major for two years. He has done a great deal to add sparkle to the band. Compliments of LANE'S BROS. The thrill for some and sorrow for others when the band began to play Pomp and Circum- stancew will always remain in our hearts. When we were sitting on the stage that May 28, 1959, memories of our past four years at T.J. were running through our minds. There were memories of the first game, first high school classroom, and first dance as Freshmen. Our Sophomore year was more fun because we were no longer the Mfreshiesf, We began having parties and dating. The thrill for all the girls was to see if they would be asked into one of the literary societies. We'll always remember speech class and the thought of giving a speech in front of our classmates. Then came our Junior year. The year most of us worked the hardest in our courses. We were finally reaching our goal, to be Seniors. The big high- light of our Junior year was the day our class rings arrived. We remember the thrill of swapping rings with usomeone specialn . . . the thrill of seeing our class- mates playing on the Varsity teams. We yelled as loud as we could to show them we were behind them all the way. Finally Prom time came. Our theme HParis Cafe was the best theme, with our Eiffel Tower in the middle of the floor and small outdoor cafe style tables with checkered table cloths. We'll always re- member May 1, 1959 . . . the thrill of seeing Beverly Graves and Mike Boyer crowned Queen and King. The excite- ment of having Sandra Lapsley and Side Hyde crowned Princess and Prince. A meal to remember. I43 Almost ready ln September of 1959 we as Seniors made our way to TJ. and through the familiar halls to our classrooms. The day we long waited for, to be Seniors, but really we didn't feel any different. We remember the fun of seeing the scared Freshmen pushing their way through the halls. We remember the long hours our boys used to practice football. The thrill of the year was the night of November 7, when we beat Boystown 24-20 for the first time in a long time. We remember the Varsity Cheerleaders' new sweaters. They worked hard enough to get them. We remember the many close basketball games. The sorrow of everyone as A. L. beat us by only 3 points to determine who would go on to the State Tournament. We remember the good 'feeling it gave us to know that our orange and white signs were brighter than the schools on the hill because of our overwhelming anxiety to win the game. We remember A. Lfs chants of H0n To Staten and the lumps in our throats, wishing we were saying it. We remember 'coriental Gardens the theme of the Junior-Senior Prom: We want to thank the Juniors for the lovely night they gave us. The evening was so much fun and full of excitement and climaxed when Sandra Lapsley was crowned Queen and Tom Bruner crowned King. The lovely music that played till it was time to go home even though we all hated to leave. I44 ...W Graduated Now we leave our Alma Mat l45 We'll never forget our terrific baseball team. The team will miss Mr. Jessen, a wonderful coach who has led many a T.,l. team to the State Tournaments. Re- member the thrill of going to the Spring State Tournament at Mason City but the sorrow of losing our first game? Our team came back though and won the Summer Championship. We can't help but feel proud of their spirit and winning spree. We remember Skip Day at lVlerritt's Beach? We remember the Senior Banquet, the good food, the good entertainment, the reading of the Will and Prophecy and the tears when Mr. lessen gave us our farewell speech. Weill never forget the day we received our caps and gowns and the many practices for Baccalaureate and Commencement. The familiar sound of Mrs. Strick- land counting 1-2-3-4. We remember Mrs. Andersonis and Rev. Barber's good advice for our future. The highlight of the evening when we received our diplomas and the sorrow when we thought that this would be the last time all of us would be together. Yes we remember: And we always will: In our four years we have had a lot of fun. A few heartbreaks and trouble with teachers. To our parents, teachers and friends Who made it possible for us to experience this thrill in life's path we want to say thank you-thank you from the bottom of our hearts. The future awaits you I46 I Tal .-9 TJ.--4 TJ.-1 TJ .-10 TJ .-1 1 TJ .-4 ROW 1, left to right: D. Smith, B. Mattox, J. Medakovich, R. Howland, S. Visuri, Coach Davis. ROW 2: P. Thompson, B.
