The Sigma Tau Literary Society which was organized in 1922, was the second society for girls at Thomas Jefferson. In 1948, the name Sigma Tau was changed to Altruma. The aim of the society is to develop the members on scholarship, leadership, and character. Altruma's motto is To Thine Ownself Be True. The society's colors are Coral Pink and China Blue. In the beginning of each school year a formal and in- formal initiation is held. Other social activities are held during the year, but the main event is a banquet in May honoring the senior members. All Altruma members and their mothers attend this affair. Much of our success and progress was due to the work and cooperation of our new sponsor, Miss Phyllis Olander. 34 HURURH iii. She has added much to the success and honors of the club, for without her these honors would have been im- possible. The club's motto is Strive to the Highest. The name Aurora pertains to the Goddess of Dawn. The club's colors are nile green and buff. The club has held many social events such as the alumni party, Christmas party and Mother- Daughter Banquet, which all seem to be very popular with its members. The aim of the club is to develop literary ability, character, and service. The society is limited to fifty girls. 35 Tri- ff? NOT PICTURED: Bob Heath, Dick Keller, and Don Brown It's harder to play on a losing football team than playing on a winning team. This fact was brought forth by the loss of, what we once thought were, many key players. Having won only one game and tying one game in the past two seasons, the Yellow jackets started the season enthusiastically hopeful of returning to their winning Ways. Losing the opener was a great blow to coach Frank La Mantia's boys, for the pre-season speculators had picked the Big Reds of Missouri Valley as the weakest team we played on our very tough schedule. The Dopesters were right as the Yellowjackets went down in fighting defeat in each of the eight following contests. Because of the loss of many boys, who had been counted on in starting rolls earlier in the season, the veteran team that was supposed to represent Tee Jay this year was sadly missing. The boys who made up the bulwark of this Year's team were mostly underclassmen, with several playing first squad right up from last years freshman squad. The Jeffs' improved with every game, as coach La Mantia found the Combination in late-season. With the many underclassmen who played con- siderable football on this year's squad we are looking fora team, in the future, we may be proud of. CHHHIPIUHS Thomas Jefferson High School brought home the first state championship in Council Bluffs'high school history only three years after the addition of baseball to the school's sport agenda. The summer's activity was a fitting climax to a highly successful season to the Yellowjackets baseballers. The Tee Jay squad lost only one game to Iowa competition all year. The won the championship with victories over Bedford, Mt. Ayr, and shut out the Lynx 4 to O to advance to district play. Beating Des Moines West 8 to 6 they went on to defeat Remson St. Mary's in the Substate finals 5 to 4 in extra innings. Then the Yellowjackets moved into the state finals against Dysart, emerging victorions and State champs by a 9 to 4 margin. Several of these boys moved up to the first squad be- cause of injuries and lack of men. Next year-'s Znd team outlook will be much better with several experienced boys back and many outstanding frosh moving up. 8 6 O 15 13 o 7 28 E3 South Prep North Benson Central Tech A. L. This team showed great promise and many outstanding boys were observed from the sidelines. Bad breaks in the way of broken ankles and injuries were instrurnental in the final standings of the team. Dispite the breaks, our frosh never stopped fighting and scored in every contest but one. e also had the distinction of beingqthe only team to score on the Cham- pion orth High freshman. We're expecting big things from these boys next year. RECORD Bloomer South Pr ep North Benson Central This page sponsored by S. S, KRESGE DOLLAR STORE EAIHHHIIS 5 . BHSHETBHH The most promising bunch of freshmen I've coached since I've been at Tee Ja . These are the enthusiastic words of the freshman coach, Bob Barritt, about this year's basketball team. His words are further backed up by the teams record of 8 wins against 4 losses. Of the 4 losses suffered the boys averaged 3 of the defeats in later games by substantial scores. This team had the honor winnin the first game in our new fieldhouse and finished tie season with only l defeat in our new gym. Considering the frosh played mostly second teams using Juniors as well as Sophomores their record is truly amazing. 15 ll bi 'Zvi FRONT ROW, L.to R: Russell Grove Mgr. , IackFreese, Jerry Fox, Don Roarity, Bruce Johnson.
