Also, during the first semester, the class, with its sponsors, Mrs. Lee and Mr. Bolton, gave two dances. The last semester open2d with work beginning on the Monticello. Preparations for the Road Show began in earnest during March and a very successful show was given April 15, 16, and 17. This year, for the first lime, the show, a fast and entertaining program, was given for three evening performances in ac ' dition to the grade school matinee. Dick Damon was student director. The spotlight of attention was then focused on the annual, with Bob Webster and Virginia Christensen working like Trojans to beat deadlines and make this book possible. Decal sales and dances furnished further class revenue which, together with the other class funds went into the oublishing of this Monticello. Then, a trip to Audubon for a Music Festival, a concert at Bayliss Park, the Ak-sar-ben parade in Omaha, and a football game in three consecutive days. During the next few days, they became a concert band again, for the Teachers Convention at the Broadway Theater, October 3. On the 18th of October, the band went again to Audubon for the State Marching Contest, and re- ceived a I rating. Following the football games, seating try-outs were given and then practice for the Christmas program was begun. On December 1 8. the Christmas program was presented, and in the evening, the annual Christmas party was held for the band members. At the end of the first semester, Mr. Samuel Corbach was transfered to Chicago, and Mr. T. M. falmadge. Director of the Audubon High Band, took over the position. On March 5, the Band gave a concert preceding the Military Ball. From then to April 10, the Band concentrated on the music for the contest held at Clenwood, Iowa. On April 21 , the band went to Omaha to hear the United States Navy Band. Then, practice for the Spring concert, on May 7. was begun. Changing again into a marching band, they marched in the Northwestern Centennial parade on May 12. The R.O.T.C. Band performed at the Federal Inspection at T. ).. May 18. The annual band banquet was held on May 20, when awards were presented. Finishing the year, the band will march in the Memorial Day parade, and an Army parade in Omaha. The game was scoreless for three quarters before Nalty outran the Big Reds on an end run. Central fell next. 1 3-0. Harold Kinart sneaked over and then passed to Nalty for another touchdown. The Jefferson team continued undefeated by defeating A. L., 15-0. Murphy and Schreiber scored on a fumble and a blocked punt respectively. The last three points came on a safety later in the game. Tee Jay first tasted defeat at the hands of North. Tee jay outplayed a powerful North outfit, but too many penalties kept them in a hole. The final score was 19-6. Tee Jay rebounded to smother Benson. 26-0. The Jeffs ' running attack was perfect. Their speedy backs sped through a good Benson team for four tallies, three by W. J. Rollison. The team took the city championship by smearing their city rival Abraham Lincoln, 28-0. The seond team played most of the game. In the last game, the Yellowjackets lost to undefeated Creighton Prep. 20-7. The Jackets put up a good score at the half, 7-7. but faded under a barrage of passes in the last half. In all. the team finished in a tie for third place m the Intercity League with Tech. took the city championship, and had the leading scorer of the league in W. J. Rollison. fullback. In a non-league game, T. J. was out-passed by a snappy Boys Town team, although the Yellowjackets ' ground play was better. ?« G r ' ss The Yannigans. coached by Bernie Bolton, trudged through ar up and down season. The first game was here, against Benson. Jiles tossed the lone score to win for the Bunnies, 6-0. Bad tackling proved fatal for Coach Bolton ' s boys. Central was annihilated, 25-0, by a perfect football machine. The Yannigans ' John Gibbons, freshman, in his second football game, made several brilliant runs. Fast backs from Teh outran Tee Jay defenders for two touchdown and the game. The line played well for the Yannigans. The tradition-packed second team classic with Abe Lincoln went to the Boltoneers, 18-0. It was a well-deserved win, as it was the first win by a Yannigan team over any team coached by Kaltenborn, Abe Lincoln second team coach. Over on the Packed field the Yannigans downed South, 13-0. John Gibbons and Dan Schwartz made the tallies. The last game was against the undefeated North team and tha Yannigans did no better against the champions than the other teams. The final score was 15-0. The Boltoneers finished with a 3 win-3 loss record. The Jeffs got off on the wrong foot the first gcame, losing to Benson 38-37. Tho following we.k, however, they trounced Loga n 59-21. They stayed in the groove and managed a poor win over Sioux City Trinity 31-25. It was a wild game all the way, with the |effs looking their poorest. After that wild game was out of their system they carrte to life and defeated Malvern 63-25. They got off to a terrific start and kept a hot pace. The reserves played most of the game. Clawson was high scorer. Their next game wasn ' t an easy victory. They came from behind to down St. Francis. Again Clawson was high scorer with 1 1 . They felt the loss of W. J. Rollison in the next game which they lost 40-35. It was a hard-fought game with neither team sure of the outcome till the last few seconds. The Abe Lynx handed the Jeffs their third loss and their second straight. In their rivalry both teams played their best games. A. L. managed to overpower the Jeffs and win handily 47-39. T. ). then traveled across the river and took a trimming from Creighton Prep, absorbing their worst defeat of the season, by the score of 55-27. Kinart, playing one of his best re- bound games, just couldn ' t compete with Heyden and Benson, both 6 feet 5. Dimunitive Pete Larsen sank four buckets with a miunte to go but the seconds lost 35-28. The Jeffs hit the win column again by stopping a fighting crew from Glenwood 47-33. Corbin was high point man with 12. Next, the Jeffs chalked up a victory by the small score of 32-29, over North High. They then avenged an early defeat by stopping Benson 38-35. It was a crowd thriller all the way. Del Corbin was good for 17 points. In their next game the Jeffs nudged out Harlan 39-34. Kinart, shelved because of an injury, was sorely missed. T. J., putting on one of their greatest shows, received a loss from A. L. by the small score of 32-31. The following week they put on an even better battle against Boystown and came close to making an upset victory. At the end of the third quarter the Jeffs led by 10 points, but Boystown showed why they were a great ball club by overcoming that lead and winning 47- 45. After losing two close games the Jeffs couldn ' t assemble any kind of an attack against Mo. Valley and lost a poorly played game. They then managed to defeat a vastly improved Central club. The Jeffs ended the regular season with a 9 win-7 loss record. They opened their district play by licking a jynx and defeated A. L. 47-42. This vitory in district was the first tim; since 1944 that the Jeffs have been able to beat A. L. They traveled to Carroll for sub-state play, where they took on Boone and lost. That ended their basketball for this season but next year with four of the first five back they ought to go places, Cuiek and Corbin are next year ' s captains and both are great players. Coach Orville Orr turned out his usual competent team, and his fine coaching was evident to the many wrestling fans as they watched his boys win eight out of the twelve school matches, take second place in Inter-City, win the District title, and place seventh at State. The first vitim of the year was Tech, by j score of 32-14. Pep Conney, 85 pound new- comer, drew the top match of tha evening. South lost the first seven matches in a row, to lose to Tee Jay, 26-14. With the third meet came Tee Jay ' s first defeat, at the hands of Central. The final score was 22-20. Walter Furler and Jim Aten were outstanding, along with dependable Don Ryan. North High absorbed a defeat in the next meet, 26-12. This match supplied a lot of excitemsnt, with John Haizlip defeat ing a Netiraska State Champion. The next opponent was Eagle Grove. Tee J.iy winning by 19-1 6. A. L. came next, and again the Tee Jay boys were up to par, ending on top of a 26-20 score. Fort Dodge handed Toe Jay their second defeat of the season, 20-12. Ed Lane ' s wrestling ability was outstanding in this meet. In a second meeting with Tech, Tee Jay again won, 30-12. Bob Nusser, freshman newcomer, wrestled South ' s state champion with a style that made him a favorite with the fans. The final score was in Tee Jay ' s favor, 24-12. Central again defeated Tee Jay. 20-17. This meet was anexciting one, and, as a result. Tee Jay was driven from the race for the Inter-City title. The last match of the season regularly scheduled was with North High. Tee Jay won, 28-14. Then the Tee lay boys went to the District meet at Das Moines, and came home with first place. At State, Don Ryan again proved his ability as he became a State Champion for the second year in a row. The team ended up in seventh place. Although some of the boys graduated, the team, next year, should be one of the top ones Tee Jay has ever had. with some material returning to the mats. In 1947 he was undefeated in dual meets, and topped it off by winn ng the District championship plus the state championship that year. During the past season, 1948, he was not only undefeated but he won 1 I falls out of 13 matches. Many of the boys Con wrestled this year outweighed him from 10 to 35 lbs. Coach Orr always put him against the cleverest opponent of the team T. ). wrestled. Don, weighing only 152 lbs., cculd fulfill the 155 pound class and the 165 lb. class as well as doing a splendid job in the heavyweight division. Coach Orr called him his utility man, because he was able to use him in three different weights. Don won the State Championship again in 1948, only he moved up one weight to the 1 55 lb. class in doing it. He came back the next week and copped the 160 lb. class in the Midwest A.A.U. wrestling tournament. Then the following week he entered the district Olympic tournament at Nebraska University and won second place which qualified him for the Olympics at Am3s, Iowa. Winning the Midwest A.A.U. at Omaha qualified him for the National A.A.U at Hemp- stead, New York. The city council of Council Bluffs, with aid by the Nonpareil and its sports reporter, George Lindsey, raised over $500 for the Don Ryan appreciation fund and sent not only Don but his coach Orville Orr to this tournament in New York. This trip was the highlight of Don ' s high school wrestling career. Although he didn ' t place in the tournament, he had a pleasant one week stay in New York City, seeing all the famous places, a big league ball game, and other sights. The people of Council Bluffs certainly showed their appreciation of Don by their fine response. Don Ryan will long be remembered as one of the finest athletes T. J. has ever had, also one of the finest academic students of the school. We know Don will continue to receive greater awards as he goes on to college and the future.
