FOOTBALL With the return of nine lettermen the Tee lay Yellowjackets opened the l946 football season in good fashion, the fancy leffs trounced Missouri Valley on the home field Sept. l3, l94O. Venturing to Central for their next fray, the Orangemen displayed ever detail of a perfect football team. They remembered well the defeat Central handed them last season, reckoning their fine chance for the inter-city title. The leffs really poured it on defeating Central 31-6. On Oct. 4, the first A. L., T. I. game, we saw the leffs take a hard earned I2-6 victory. After a few minutes of play the jeffs held a 6-O count on the hilltoppers. A. L. came back to knot the score 6 all. After the half the leffs came back to score again to win. The next on the leffs card was Omaha North which proved to be a battle from start to fin- ish. The Vikings scored first to lead the leffs till the final period. Two long aerials from Burkey to Pettit payed off for 6 points. Malone made a beautiful dive over the center for the winning point, giving the leffs a 7-6 victory. The Yellowjackets' victory streak continued as they took an easy I3-O victory over Benson. Boystown invaded the Yellowjackets gridiron on Oct. 26, to end the winning streak for T. I. and making it their eighth straight victory 19-6. Creighton Prep crushed the Ieffs chances for a inter-city title in a l6-6 victory on their own field November l. The final game of the season with A. L. was a real treat for the Tee jay fans. The Yellow- jackets ran, passed, and kicked to a tune of 26-7. Chuck O'Brien and Ray Burkey thrilled the packed stadium on long runs following the intercepting of passes. The Yellowjackets displayed all season great offensive power with speedy backfield. The for- ward line proved well by landing two members on the All-State teams. Bob Pettit, first team end, and Chuck O'Brien fifth team center. flwfiaff TOP ROW-Louls Nelson, T: Don Ryan, T-G: Dave Goodman, G: Gary Dodge, G: Roy Adams, T-G. They were compelled to practice in different places due to the smallness of T. l.'s gym. Also at mid-year graduation the team lost its height, Bob Pettit, and a good guard, lack Cook. The outstanding game of the season was with Creighton Prep. Being favored to win, Creigh- ton proceded in doing so the first quarter with the score IO-6. From there Tee lay took the lead, holding a 22-14 advantage at the rest period. lt was a battle for the lead throughout the last half with Tee jay emerging victorious by the score of 44-42. This defeat put Creighton out of the lntercity and Interstate race. The Creighton game showed that Tee lay was no push over as did all the rest of the games. Another game in which Tee lay showed its power was the first of the two games with A. L. Keeping in front or a point or two behind us to the fourth quarter. Then A. L.'s noted fast break, which Tee lay kept under control the first half, broke loose the last quarter and put the Lynx out in front. The Yellowjackets fought gamely but could not regain the lead.
