It was one of those swell Nlondays that so often comes after a drizzly week-end. The sky was an azure blue, the trees and grass had a freshness to their greenness that had come with the spring rains the day before, flowers held all the colors of the spectrum collected from the rainbow which had followed the preceding day,s showers. All the windows in the school were open and the students divided their time between the lesson and the invitations that the spring weather was sending out. The office was busy with the usual first-period work that accompanies Monday mornings, making out admits, typ- ing letters, answering telephone calls, and answering numerous questions to students. Mr. IVIyers was in his private office in conference when suddenly he popped out the door looked around to see who was in the outer office seemed to be satisfied and said I ou rnalism Room Bob will you step into my office a minute? For the students' enjoyment, replied Bob. I suppose that's as good a reason as any. The students that are in clubs get a lot out of them. Take the Sigma Tau here: part of Bzology Club 1ts purpose IS to promote healthful recreatlon and to develop personallty Through the varxous programs that the club plans throughout the year these two vnrtues are stressed The student m the club naturally acqulres these and when she leaves the school she car rxes them w1th her Consequently she w1ll always know how to partake ln healthful recreation she w1ll have developed a personality ln the club whlch would have been m1SSCd entxrely rf ll had been allowed to develop rn the classroom alone As these clubs are com paratxvely small groups, more txme can be spent on the mdlvxdual When a g1rl leaves one of these socletles she has a very good background whlch she can use ln her later hte The next club we vxstt sald Bob as the three left the Sxgma Tau lS the Delphlan Llt erary Soclety, another gurls orgamzatxon The motto of the socxety xs Let us by our deeds be known and belleve me they are known by their deeds at least around school Mrs Ahce ones and Miss Mabel Klllmger are the sponsors of the Delphlans Presxdent of the club lS Rose Clark semor, the vlce presldent lS Dorothy Hough senior, secretary IS ane Lewxs, jumor the treasurer ns Pat Prentice, junior The purpose of the club IS To study llterary work and gam culture by mxxmg work wnth play etc E .........................,,...,................. In the spring they give a tea for the mothers and in the winter they give a banquet for the seniors of the club and their mothers. Why are there so many girls' clubs in the school, and so few with boys in themf' ques- tioned Mr. Avers as the group headed towards the gym where the GAA was in progress. Period Three Sewing There are one or two boys clubs in the school but their membership is rather low I lay the reason for the lack of boys in clubs to the fact that so manv of them either work after school or partake in sports A great percentage of the boys in school go out for the different sports especially in the spring As you know when a boy is out for athletics he must devote his outside time to building himself up physically and he can t very well do that if he spends his time at club meetings even though the meetings are two weeks apart as there may be an important game or track meet which comes during the same week as the club meeting Let s go in the gym and watch part of the GAA s meeting GAA stands for Girls Ach letic Association and to be a member of the group a girl must have earned so many points in her physical education classes by participating in different events playing on different teams and being a good athlete in girls sports The purpose of the club is To create interest in girls athletics Miss Hannah Nyholm physical training instructor is the spon sor of the club ean Rayburn senior is president Erma Dray senior is vice president Bettie Martin junior is secretary and Daisy Lalich junior is the treasurer The organization sponsors several programs during the year outstanding of which are the gym night program and the May fete The gym night program is for the girls of the school and their mothers and friends The May fete is the highlight of the season Each IP-KGE 491 E ...7,,...........,.......................,..,.7. C1 Thanksgiving Day, 1938, will be long remembered by all who attended one of the most thrilling games ever staged between the rival high schools of Council Bluffs. The weather cou1dn't have been better, and the Abraham Lincoln team was on fine edge to avenge themselves for the defeat suffered on Armistice Day when Thomas Jefferson captured the city laurels with a score of 12-15. Both teams fought valiantly. oftentimes with their heels literally at the goal lines, but their struggles went for naught as the game ended a 6'6 tie. The following pictures are shots taken at crucial points in the game. See if you can identify the players. Action Shots at Turkey Day Scrap - . -.i ..a. ,.. 938 193 ABIIPUIEPMPHTE Humnr .
