Kane who had befrrended them rn trme of need In 1852 the Mormon people estalnlxshed a colony ln Salt Lake valley and left thls settlement for the land whrch promlsed them freedom After the general movement of the Mormons from Western Iowa the State 1.eg1slature approved an act on anuary 19 1853 changmg the name to Councll Bluffs Thxs act hecame effectlve on February 9 1853 A the crty of Councrl Bluffs grew the school system was added for the henefrt of the growrng chlldren Councll Bluffs Independent school dlstrrct was frrst organrzed 1n the year 1855 At that tlme lf was entlrely destltute of school huxldmgs but the Con regatlonal Church was used for that purpose Durrng the school year a tract of land rn Glendale adclltron was recommended to be purchased for a Umon school hut the l'8501L1fl0l'1 was unpopular and drd not go through The year 1864 was a very ewccltlng one and xnaugurated a new era rn the lustory of our publxc schools The f1rst school huxldlng ln the cxty was erected and was known as the Stutsman Street Schoolhouse Later on durxng the same year Council Bluffs built a school burldmg for 55 O00 thus pro vndlng for two schools of three departments each Flve years later the school system had 1 000 puprls slx bulldmgs and 20 teachers wlth the three story Councxl Bluffs Hugh School bulldmg nearly completed The men teachers were pard 525 30 and the women, S12 84 The school year contamed ten months The larger hugh schools of the state by 1891 were offermg some options ln the worlc pur sued Councrl Bluffs had three courses, Engltsh, Latm, and busmess but all students were required to take Englrsh Stenography and typmg were mcluded rn the busmess course ln order to retam certam students who were rnchned to wnthdraw to enter busrness Abra ham Lxncoln hlgh school was flmshed m the summer of 1901 replacing the old Council Bluffs hugh school School erected smce 1904 1n Councrl Bluffs are Thomas Jefferson, Gunn school, james Rue school, Walnut Grove school, Bloomer school, Courtland school, Benjamin Franlclrn school, and Oak Street school There are now two hrgh schools, one Jumor hrgh, and 17 grade schools Thomas jefferson has an enrollment of 814, and Abraham Lmcoln, 964 The total enrollment rn the entire Councll Bluffs school system IS 9,472 pupils 19 31 3 Ibex en .1 Q 1' Y! fl al 5 X i if S 3 g fy Q ,:,.txz,k:-,Q K - Q. h XX A Q , sf , 1 r ,Q grww g , . .
