S '. Wix P' I HISTORY OF MONTICELLO It is a time worn custom for all institutions of higher learning to publish a book each ycar as a review of the season's work, the year's events in extra curricular activities and the classes and administration. In observation of that custom, we of Thomas jefferson High School, have for six years published an annual, Monticello. Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, never, throughout his whole life, forgot his home or his family. In 1769 when he was a member of the House of Burgesses in Virginia, jefferson came in possession of a large tract of land on the banks of the James river. In the same year he began the erection of his residence on the summit of the world renouned eminence, Monticello. It stands on the top of the highest hill overlooking the surrounding territory. Monticello was not built in a day. The first building was a brick, story-and-a-half structure containing one large room and several smaller onesg it still stands today as thc south pavilion of that memorable homestead. The house was enlarged from time to time to suit the needs of the family. Greek, Italian and colonial architecture are all combined in this one building. Jeffer- son, in his travels abroad, got many ideas of architecture and since he drafted all the plans for his estate he combined all these ideas. Jefferson planned every part of his house him- self. .Each part was built for the convenience of his own family. Every flower bed, each tree, each garden and field was laid out by that great executive. I-le believed in doing things in the best possible manner, never rushing any project just to get it done. When the home was completed everything was just as Jefferson wished it-why? Because he took all the responsibility upon his shoulders and did things independently. The last part added to the homestead was very beautiful and well made. This left the mansion possessing certain elegance, beautiful simplicity, supreme dignity, but most of all, an air of completion. Because Monticello with its stately pillars and dignified appearance, still stands today, a memory of a noble man, we, the students of this school that is dedicated to JefIerson's memory, have named our annual Monticello in tribute of him. lllll' Q Lx S ix
