In the 1964-i965 school term the Thomas Jef- ferson Student Council put forth its greatest ef- fort yet to provide service for the school and to obtain better student faculty relationships. Dur- ing football season, the council sold football pro- grams at all of the Jaguar's home games. lt also purchased additional speakers for the football field. The Student Council, during the Christmas season, sent out l5OO letters and lollipops from Santa. After every home basketball game, the club sponsored dances in the community room. The council was busy all year with many other worthwhile projects. Mrs. Crump leads the student body in the Alma Mater during the Student Council assembly. 32 f -ir' . . TJ's newspaper, The Statesman, is an organiza- tion designed to keep the student body informed on current school events, to air student opinions, and to create opportunities for students to prac- tice journalism. The Statesman has published eight issues this year, including a double Senior Edition. The staff not only writes the articles, but they edit, type, publish, and sell the newspaper. The paper has a well-balanced combination of news, features, sports and photography. The Statesman is a representation of TJ, and the editors and staff are proud of the finished product. 5 Q f l r 4 il E gl Editors, Tom Dittman and Pat Russell are busy preparing the Statesman for press. If the yearbook is accur- ate, lasting, and personal, the staff has ful- filled its purpose of bringing you the best book they can offer. The 1965 Monticello has two features pre- viously unused in T.J. yearbooks-the metallic school seal on the cover, and the color division pages. The many other tasks the staff has completed--planning the layout for the book, taking, sorting, and proportioning pictures, laying out the pages, writing, editing and typ- ing articles, meeting four deadlines and proof- reading the finished copy, were all rewarding and gratifying experiences. The National Honor Society is an organization of juniors and seniors who have acted as stand- ards for other members of the high school. The society is limited to students who have attained a 3.4 scholastic average in high school and who have displayed exemplary leadership, character, service, and citizenship. The club is responsible for an honor awards system for senior high homerooms and for its annual induction assembly. This year the society has added a new service-the offering of tutorial service for any student desiring help in a subject. The new project has been highly praised and high- ly successful. The club had its greatest year financially at their annual refresh- ment stand at football games. The Football Queen Contest, the selling of license plates, catering at banquets, and helping out at pep rallies and bas- ketball games are just a few of the worthwhile and serviceable duties of the club. Maintaining its status as The Club of the Year last year, the club also sponsored a Christmas Dance this year, which also met with financial success. The club has been aided greatly during the past three years under the able direction of Mr. McTaggart and it will miss his leadership next year. Never- theless, The Key Club will strive to maintain the high degree of quality that this year's club has exhibited. The Varsity Club, sponsored by Mr. Charles Bakewell, is an organization of athletes open to all boys who have earned a letter in one of the school's seven major sports. Ta achieve high stand- ards and promote a strong athletic program is the basis of the organization. Along this line the varsity club this year initiated a permanent pic- ture display honoring those athletes who down through the school's history have won the Optim- ist Club's annual most valuable player award. The varsity club serves the entire school by providing a hat 8. coat check at all school func- tions and distributing programs at all home bas- ketball games. Yearly, the club buys each of its members a varsity jacket, the symbol of athletic supremacy at T-J. , xl? The club pro- vided some extra curricular entertainment by showing some of the world's more famous films, as the Academy Award winning All Quiet on the Western Front. I This year the student body had much reason to be proud of the half time performance at football games. The marching band, under Mr. AIoisi's direction, reflected its spirit and weeks of practice each time it entertained at a game. With its clever marching formations and clear, loud quality of sound, the band, aided by the drum major, Roger Finfinger, the majorettes, and the drill team, put on good performances. Whether they played Hello Dolly, the Pitt fight song, More , or any other selection, the T. J. students in the stands showed their pride in their marching band. The majorette squad, with head majorette Linda Costolo - I f' f leading, show their skill by twirling fire batons. The mood was set immediately when you entered the dance floor through the winding tunnel which was neatly decorated and gave a mysterious impression of what was to follow. The dance floor was enhanced by the pale blue lighting and the elaborately ornamented trees while couples danced in a maze of bridges and ponds. Following the prom, entertainment was pro- vided in the gymnasium by Porky Chedwick and an array of entertainers while the Arondi's provided some more lively music in the Community Room. Food was available in the Japanese Tea Room atmosphere in the Cafeteria. All who attended the Prom will never forget the oriental fantasy of Shangri-La. K , fi. The play, stopped several times both nights by the appreciative audience, will be remembered as the best received play ever done at our high school. It represented a total class effort, an effort of spontaneous excitement and satisfaction, that culminated in a hilariously funny play. YCTlWY , as it will always be remembered, won the Pulitzer Prize for its co-authors, George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. After much planning, the sophomores, under Mr. Milto's supervision, created many new at- tractions for the Carnival. Among the most popular were the White Elephant Sale, the grab bag, and the weight guessing booth. When the day was over, gym decorations were torn down and new ones constructed for the carnival dance that evening. WRESTLING TEAM HAS GOOD FIRST SEASON The Jaguar wrestling team, coached by Mr. Robert Cook, compiled a highly respectable 4-4 record in its first year of competition. The wrestlers finished strong winning their last four matches in ci row. The Jeffs were competing against schools which had established wrestling programs. This is parti- cularly significant since our wrestling team had no previous experience. After gaining some ex- perience, the team then got on a winning trial. Rich Zewe, a sophomore, was the top winner with a 7-l record. Coack Cook is looking forward to next season. Of his eight lettermen, only team captain, Dave Aiken will be lost to graduation. EPI LOGUE One school, one people, one year - sharing the unnoticed, the insignificant, the everyday . . . half-reflecting window - gray, skinny strips on a slanted floor - opaque, glass blocks, playing spectrum with the sun - a wooden head with a hollowed nose and a Cyclops eye - a weakened curve of water in a fizzled-out fountain - fire alarm with the glass door partially unlatched - carving maze on the desks - sleek, shiny floor, folded up bleachers - the mass exodus from the auditorium and classes and lunch and 3:20. The sudden silence and aloneness of a half- cracked door in an empty auditorium on June 8 . . . beckoning us to enter - to try to be a part, once again. an But there are no more parts - no more belong- ing actively to that school, those people, that year.
