Preparation For The Business World Thomas Jefferson's offering to commercial students constitute a pro- gram rich in well-planned, well-directed proficiency. Those pupils elect- ing the commercial program study have for their intended mastery, courses in typing, shorthand, business law, business math, business En- glish, bookkeeping, clerical practice, and transcription. To instruct in these areas, the school employs an efficient staff of teachers, plus the additional aids of up-to-date business machines and departmental equipment. To practice acquired skills outside the class- room and thus give students an even more concrete business experience, the department assigns sets of its pupils to various tasks in and around the high school office. Responsibilities encountered here make clear that actual practice is, as the classroom states, strictly business . With such background, commercial students can enter the business world confidently after graduating - and often, even more easily. J. foreign language circles, expressions like Com- ment-vous appelez-vous?,' Wie geht es Ihnen, Come esta usted? and Pax vobiscum are commonplace to respective scholars of the French, German, Spanish, and Latin tongues. These students, confronted with a study new in declensions, conjugations, accent marks, and nouns of various genders, at- tempt first the mastery of these basic fundamentals, and then the knowledge of a foreign people's habits and heritage. Much of this mastery and knowledge comes from classic authors like Cervantes, Cicero, Hanssad, and Mauppassant, and classical works like The Aeneid, Metamorphosis, Les Miserables, and Don Quixote. The by-products of such study - better under- standing of a country's geography, history, and social structure - prove vital to a totality of language comprehension. With further aid by maps, songs, pictures, movies, menus, anecdotes, and tape recordings, students have been able to touch a way of life that at one time was comparatively strange to them. Though their experiences be vicarious, they are also incontestably valuable.

Industrial Arts Develops anual Skills Are they making counterfeit plates? The Industrial Arts department occupies most of the first floor area. The simple and complex machinery, the basic and intricate working materials found here supply the wants and needs of all shop boys, grades seven through twelve. In junior high young males use these tools and material first in beginning projects, like door stops and letter holders. As working with lathes, table saws, and drawing boards become easier, projects become, in turn, larger and more involved. By late senior high the I. A. boys have become the near-polished builders of lamps, tables, and chests. Through various courses these same students have also begun work on mechanical draw- ing, blueprint reading, and designing Qa long advancement from the first wobbly door stop.j The finished product of the shop boy, be it letter holder or table lamp, is a work only part-wood. It's also, and even more important, part-maker.
