Since communication will be a factor commonly uniting the new generation of bankers, mechanics, secretaries, and teachers, English is required in all areas - academic, commercial, general, and tech- nical. In junior high, language fundamentals are drilled into all classes. As pupils advance to high school status, their knowledge of these fundamentals is tested through further drill, group discussions, speaking situations, written reports, and literature analyses. By the senior year English study is geared more to specific student needs. Business stu- dents focus upon practical application of grammar and form, general students, though their study is not so confined, also focus mainly upon mastery of these mechanical areas, academic students pour over works of Shakespeare, Milton, and Chaucer, while an Advanced Placement group concentrates upon literature of the Greeks, Romans, French, and Russians, as well as the English. Creative Writing and Speech are culminations-elective areas popu- lated by members of all sections, who work to fur- ther and polish their learnings in these technical areas. English, thus, in some variety or offering, is a sub- ject universal to the entire high school set. Tomor- roW's bankers, mechanics, secretaries and teachers cannot fail to feel the subject's influence, nor can they fail, in some way, to profit by it. 16
