Kenneth Henderson runs the relays at the Parkland Invitational. Following a good start, the relay team was disqualified after a bad handoff. The names of winners in a track and field meets were recorded for the first time in Olympic Games in Greece in 776 B.C. The Romans took over the Olympic Games in A.D. 394. These games, held every four years, featured jumping, hurdling, weight throwing, and running. ln the 1800's, England revived interest in track and field events. The first college meet was held in 1864 when Oxford defeated Cam- bridge. Amateur competition inthe United States started in 1868. Track Events usually are the main contests at track and field meets. Jef- ferson teams competed to determine the fastest runners. The athletes who ran the 440 yard relay mile were: Hec- tor Felix, Oscar Magana, Charlie Bell, Robert Martinez and Fernie Vasquez. At a track meet, the Jefferson runners raced around an oval track sprinting toward the finish line. On the field cen- ter, other athletes competed in jump- ing hurdles were: Mike Corona, Robert Martinez and Oscar Del Toro. While others competed in throwing the shot put. These were: Juan Chavez, Alfonso Carr and Rudy Payan. Discus throwers were Leo Madrid, and Ray Estrada.
