JI- -A ---i-- Frosh Season a Nightmare for Coach Polhamus The Freshman, led by first year Coach Robert Polhamus had some big problems as they were winless through almost all the district season. We were a young ball club, and it showed because we played inconsis- tently without any intensity, said Coach Polhamus. He also said, We lost a lot of games in district by close margins. All through the year he praised his top men Manny Labrado, Pete Diaz, Ricky Mariscal, and Sal De Lucio. They seemed to do everything they possibly could. They really had a good team but were lacking a main ingredi- ent to make a winning team. At the Hillcrest Tournament, the Foxes defeated Clint 38-28 in their first game. ln the semi-final game, they lost to lrvin 59-39. - 4 Great Start and Heartbreakers lvlade JV Season Armando Alarcon takes a jump shot from the Sophomore Richard Turner, looks for an open man free throw line attempting a two point play. inside the lane to score for the Foxes. Top left, Jimmy Camarillo, Orlando Andrade, Ruben Gomez, Fernie Rivera, Coach Wilson, Orlando' Gallegos, Robert Rodriguez, Fernie Briseno, Kenneth Henderson. Bottom, Richard Turner, Maurice Evans, Armando Alarcon, Cerjie Garcia, Oscar Aranda, Albert Michelle. The young cagers, led by Coach Danny Wilson, blasted out in the beginning of the season with a five game winning streak. In their great start they beat Ysleta, Cathedral, Lydia Patterson Institute, Alamogordo, and Canutillo. There seemed to be no stopping them until they met the Mus- tangs of Burges. After the defeat to Burges, the Foxes went on to win three more games in a row. They lost a heartbreaker to the Pan- thers at the Austin Gym as Jeff was leading all through the game. The Panthers came back to get the score closer. Points kept going both ways as one team scored, the other team came back to score. Down to last ten sec- onds, the see-saw scoring continued but Austin got on top by one. The crowd was excitedly screaming, so Coach Wilson called a time out to calm down his players. The Foxes went back on the court with five seconds left on the clock. Once they threw the ball in, they went to work on the Panther defense. Armando Alarcon sunk a shot from the side to take the lead by one. Austin came back to score leav- ing the young cagers with one second. The ball was brought in and shot from across court. The shot was missed and the game ended 50-49 Austin. Playing on the B-team was a good experience and challenging. The team was together and well organized. Everyone pulled together, stated Sophomore Richard Turner Q53J.
