B-Team Grapplers 1 Remain District Champs ' Once again the B-Team grapplers took the district title. The Foxes didn't have a hard time defending their title as they dominated the tournament along with Burgess. Eastwood fol- lowed in third as Austin closed in on fourth. The Foxes also received the St. John Iver Memorial sportmanship for the second consecutive year. This was only the second year of the tournament for B-teamers, as it was all started last year by Coach Michael Edwards. Returning varsity letterman, Benny Benavides was unable to wrestle var- sity due to district zoning which caused him to be ineligible. Therefore he had to wrestle B-team. Selected as captain of the B-team he set a great example for his team- mates as he went all the way to win his division, C1193, in district. Other gold medalists were Alfred Flores C1053, and Greg Natividad C1673. Silver medal winners included Wctor Arriola, C1013, and Joe Ochoa, heavyweight. Fernie Garcia C1053, David Herrera C1143, Danny RuelasC1193, and 1 Fabian Frausto C1483, concluded the list of bronze medalists. Among winning his division, Benny , Benavides received the award for the fastest pin, which he captured with a pin of :22 seconds. Division alll! Coach Brings Coach Grayson Gwyn, brought about new changes to the wrestling program. In years past, tryouts were held in order to select the individual that would be on the Varsity and B- team squads. This meant that only one individual was selected in each weight division for each squad. This year's strategy was to have two wrestlers in each weight division for the Varsity squad. This was done in order to minimize any possibility of default by any wrestler due to any cir- cumstances that would make him ineli- gible to wrestle. Nevertheless changes didn't seem to bother the grapplers, as partially through the season the matmen had a record of 3l-1 in district and 4-2 over- all. Fox grapplers began their season with the Burges Takedown Tourny, where Sergio Fienteria placed first and Mariano Llano placed fourth in their C1 123 weight class. Also placing first was Sam Calvillo in his C1675 weight class. Next on the Foxes list was Mayfield. Losing this match 30-53, the Foxes Aboveg Alex Garcia is declared the winner of the match. At rightg stands 'Chump' the wrestlers' mascot. Changes then began preparing for their next challengers. Their hard work proved to be helpful as the Foxes demolished Irvin 51-16. With the same determina- tion and dedication the Foxes came back the next week to outfox El Paso High 37-20. With the Foxes hot on the trail, they whipped Coronado 48-10. With pride for their record the Foxes then faced Las Cruces just to upset them with a 26-17 win. The Foxes next battle was against defending city champs, Burges whom they lost to last year at city by three points. With the Foxes leading in dis- trict and Burges and Austin just trailing behind at this point, it was known to be one heck of a battle, which it proved to be till Sam CalvilloQ167D-lb. division was accidentally injured by a devastat- ing knee smash into his face causing him to lose two teeth and the match by default.
