In Memory Mary E. Schneider, 18, a Senior at Jefferson High School, passed away January 12 as a result of a one car accident at McKelligon Canyon. Also involved in the accident were three other Jeffer- son students. These students, all Juniors, were treated for minor injuries. While at Jefferson, Mary participated in several school functions and organizations. She was a member of the school choir for four years, a participant in Future Homemakers of America, B-Team Cheerleader, Junior-Varsity Cheerleader, and Girls' Varsity Golf Team member. This year she was chosen by her choir peers as Sweetheart, was active in the Senior Class Council, and ran for Most Popular Girl. Mary is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schneider, four brothers and three sisters. Members of the Senior Council collected money from fellow students of Mary Schneider, the Senior Class decided to purchase a scholarship in memory of Mary. The Senior Council tried to equal the amount of the scholarship in memory of Mary given by the P.T.A., which was S250. Jack L. Word, 59, Field Worker at Jefferson High School since 1949, died September 22. He was like a Santa Claus, said Mrs. Eleanor Yudico, registrar. He used to collect clothes for poor families and buy toys for children who wouldn't get them othenivise at Christmas. He never took any bows for what he gave, stated Mr. Genaro Fourzan, principal. As long as Jack was here, we would get anonymous checks for scholar- ships every year. At Christmas he would show up with food and clothing for needy people. l know he must have bought the things for himself. He was a great humanitarian. He always asked me for a list of needy families at Christmas time, once I was looking for someone to help buy shoes for some boys. I told him about it. Later that day he came back with a check for S1 OO, recalled Mrs. Francis Cardona, school nurse. ' Mr. Word was dedicated to Jefferson High School. Even alter his promotion to Pupil Services at Central Office, he still came back to Jefferson frequently. His widow, Mrs. Alice Word, donated the flag that covered his casket to the school. The flag will fly per- manently in front of the main building.
