That Was the Year That Was The year 1978 was many things to many people, but mostly it was a year for changes - breaking tradition. The birth of the first test-tube baby proved that babies don't have to be made the old fashioned way. The death of two popes shocked the world, and John Paul ll was elected, the first Polish Pope in history. President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel embraced as President Jimmy Carter looked on when they announced their commitment to break the 30-year conflict. No one had heard of the People's Temple or Jim Jones until more than 900 of the cult members committed mass suicide in Jamestown, Guyana. Barry Manilow was named Pop Vocal- ist for the fourth consecutive year, and National Lampoon's Animal l-louse brought back toga parties. The Annie Hall look was in, the Yankees won the World Series, and discoteques were the place to be on Friday night. Grease was the word and Mork and Mindy were the odd couple of the year. Three Albuquerque men crossed the Atlantic tor the first time on a hot air balloon and Dolly Parton was named the worst dressed woman of the year. Yes, 1978 had it all. The United States signed over the Panama Canal to Panama and cut relations with Tai- wan to make friends with Commu- nist China. Golda Meir, lndia's first lady Prime Minister was dead at 80 and the Shaw of Iran resigned his post. The S35 million film Superman was released while Cheryl Tiggs was named the number one Cover Girl. Cleveland declared bankruptcy, and Richard Nixon published his memoirs. Roots captured the country's hearts and attention and made people want to know their own roots. It was a year for changes. A year for news makers. The year 1978 had everything from beauty to peanuts. It had it all- a year to remember, it was a year for changes, a year for breaking tradition.
