Junior Council Heads Successful Year initiative and enthusiasm were shown by the Junior Council led by Daniel Barraza, president, lsela Acosta, 1st vice-president, and Lucita Bust-amante, 2nd vice-president. We had various money-raising projects such as car washes, bake sales, and candy sales, expressed Tony Licon. from a Hammer to the Lath Many thousands of years ago men pierced bits of gold for beads or ham- mered them into crude ornaments - probably the first metal known. Much later, but still so long ago that we cannot date it, copper was discov- ered and became of great use. Copper ushered in the age of metal, the beginning of a long and amazing development that has given us thou- sands of products, the steel framework of our skyscrapers, and airplanes, and innumerable things that made the world's good in quantities. Both utensils and weapons were made of copper, and when it was dis- covered, probably by accident, that the admixture of tin formed a hard bronze, metal working was given an impetus that has lasted until today. The Metal Trades Department here at Jefferson used steels as a working metal. They no longer used the method of hammering metal into crude ornaments. They worked the metal in machines some which were, The Lathe - used to cut a round or square steel for the production of various pro- jects. Drill Press -to drill vertical jholes in steel. The Metal Trades members made projects and entered them in their yearly competition V.O.C.T. fVoca- tional Opportunities Clubs of Texasj. This contest was held on March 31 .
