and Sweetheart and Beau - Sylvia Matamo- os and Joseph Fernandez - were announced uring halftime at the Jefferson vs. Andress ame. I Didh'TThihk lt Would Be Me Those were Band Sweetheart Sylvia Matamoros, 12, thoughts upon learn- ing the results of the Sweetheart and Beau contest. We nominated several seniors then had a hand-vote. After three finalists were chosen, we had a secret-ballot vote, said Olympia Oaudillo, 12, explaining the procedure. The results were kept secret until the halftime show ofthe Andress vs. Jefferson game October 6, 1978. At that time the results were made public and the court presented. The court consisted of Sweetheart Sylvia Mata- moros escorted by Beau Joseph Fer- nandez, Lady-in-Waiting Olga Baeza escorted by Ftoger Navarro, first run- ner-upg Princess Letty Nevarez escorted by Mando Fierro, second runner-up. Those weren't the only honors of the year. On November 4, 1978 the Annual Marching and Pageantry Con- test was held at the Sun Bowl. Our out standing band received a First Divison rating. Also receiving First Division rat- ings were Andress, Burges, Coro- nado, and El Paso High. Also in the Sweetheart and Beau court were Princess Letty Nevarez and second runner-up Mando Fierro. Lady-in-Waiting Olga Baeza and runner-up Floger Navarro were publicly presented at the same time as the Sweetheart and Beau.
