God granted liberty only to those who love it, and are ready to guard and defend it. - Daniel Webster 1976 brought to mind the Bi-Centen- nial, but it also brought to mind the liberty here at Iefferson. Our heritage, our American forefa- thers, are somewhat unappreciated. True, we all learned about our great forefathers, but we as Mexi- can-Americans have yet to recognize any of these as our forefathers, and the liberties they created for us have many a time been left unused. We are Americans, and as such we should also learn to recognize the founding fathers as ours and learn to live in the United States with the love and respect that is due. It is our America. So why then, if it is our country, are there bombings? Why the riots? Why the outbreaks of our students in the schools? We must all, black, white, yellow, or brown, learn to live together. We must learn how to make ourselves and our needs heard without the pain and struggle that many of the American people go through to be heard. We need to unite as one body of people, and forget our racial and prejudicial ways. This country, like our school, needs to be a place where everyone lives, works and studies for one purpose and one purpose only, to better our- selves in order to better our school, community, city, state and country. Yes, it is impossible for one person to do all this by him or herself. But if each one of us set an example for others, we might someday be proud to be an American, just as we are proud to be Ieffersonians. ,, 1 Ca 8 ICP
