Thomas Bushel, a real asset to the team, occasionally added comedy to the games by confusing the opposing players with his fast-talk. If you sat close enough to the court, you could hear BushD whispering to the opposing players, i'You don't want that ball-Hey! give it to mell' This comical streak may help Bush in helping others when he achieves his career in social working. Jeff Deneroff and Richard Klitzberg will be remembered as the cut-upl' of the team, on and off the court. Richie was forever surprising the crowd with his amazing long-shots. leff, the phenomenon of the season who was associated previously with the football team, became a varsity star when Mr. Hodesblatt, the teams enthusiastic coach, saw him playing one day. Jeff gained the respect of the fans and the team when he 'istole the shown from the regulars the first time he played. Although handicapped at times by a tricky ankle, Jeff proved his worth as a basketball player to all who saw him play. Often, Stuie VYlieelsi' Beilin, Dave Miller, and Steve Fleischman were seen on the court in the place of some team-mate. Asked what happened in the locker-room before and after the games, Bush mentioned that the boys occasionally sang, and more often, made jokes about Richie and Spence, who were always the last to be ready. f 1 l The Case 0 POI lt's no mystery that our haskethall team lost its chance at the City Championship hy losing to Erasmus hy a mere eight points. XVe need no committee of investigation to tell us that. Nor is it unknown that the jeff team had an almost perfect season with its only loss to Boys High. This too, we know. The captains of the Nickelmen certainly deserved their titles. Charles Iackson, jr., and Spencer Sander led the team, and gave them great aid in playing their games. Charlie, sometimes called Flash,l' would like to continue his athletic career as a physical education teacher. Perhaps jefferson will be fortunate enough to get Charlie hack in the gymnasium in the near future. The only thing that was wrong with Spence's basketball career was his excessive fouling. But, thatls the penalty you sometimes must pay if you want to make every shot count. Spence, a seemingly quiet person, could he depended upon for a wild sessionw once you got him started. The fy!IfU6'l7fZll'C' 0 THE 0 E THAT GO I A W AY It has been said that Springtime turns a young mans fancy to thoughts of love. However, many of their thoughts turn to other things, especially the national pastime, Baseball. And here at lef- ferson it's no different. XVhen March rolls around, the Baseball team with the help of the Coach, Mr. Robert L. Schain, who is also chairman of the Social Studies Depart- ment, looks for new prospects, who, we hope, will carry the team to many victories. The members of the team this year are mostly newcomers and the only three seniors are Spencer Sander, and Barry Goldsmith, co-captains, and Lewis Rubin. Sander, who is also a very good bas- ketball player, is expected to be one of the out- standing pitchers in the season. Last year he batted an even .500 and struck out at least 12 men in every game he pitched. Goldsmith, who is the shortstop, is another outstanding athlete and we hope he does as well on the baseball diamond as he did on the football field. The fi1'st game of the '59 season will be played against Boys High and Mr. Schain and his team are hoping for a better record than the 5-5 record of last Spring. With the efforts of the team and the support of all Ieffersonians there is no reason why their goal can't be reached. Valarie Asher It was apparent, however, that a theory was forming in Holmes' mind.
