ELEMENTS There were four years. They contained laughter, tears, exultation and despair. At first they stood apart, but now they stand together without form or end. In the beginning there were just the ele- ments-a flight of steps, an auditorium, a build- ing, a blackboard and some teachers. Then the sounds were added to the confusion-the sounds and silences of Jefferson. The blaring voice on the microphone, the sharp bang of a foot kicking a locker shut, the click of a falling piece of chalk, the shuiiling of feet up a Down staircase. Then the odors stood out: the pungent smell of the daily hot plates, of wet galoshes and the smell of sweated bodies in the gym. Then Jefferson began to mean taste and the sense of touch. We experienced the touch of the extremely cold door when we came late. We discovered the irresistible Havor of Mexican steak. All these sounds, tastes, touches and smells combined, are jefferson. At first we were kidded and teased but we could never hide the fact that we were anxious to become juniors in a hurry. We approached the senior year and we hurried even more. Have to get service credit and study for college entrance exams. The last year. Suddenly the last year was stranded and lonely as all last things are. We were not in a hurry to get it over with now. Lets start the game over. lt's too early to go home. The four years are now a medley of laughter, tears and shouting. Their dates do not matter .... ln the end there were the elements fused-ti Hight of stairs, a building, a blackboard, the teachers and Ll spirit. And we look back upon it, and it was very good. VITAL STATISTICS Since Ivashington has its Bureau of Lahor Statistics, I thought I would duplicate its work in jefferson. Here are my findings: The Senior Class, during its stay in Ieflferson, has had to listen to 2859 jokes told hy teachers, of these 9 were funny and 2850, unfunny. CAnd we can prove it.D Dur- ing our four-year stay in Ieflferson the class has collectively attended 1,763,840 classes. Ive were awalte in them 2002, of the time, asleep the rest of the time. Ask any teacher. VVe have handed in a grand total of 22,400 hook reports. Suc- cessful pupils repeated four hundred reports 8 times, 10,000 were repeated 7 times. The rest were copied from friends. Our Class has been late a total of 22,676 times and have offered 22,676 different excuses. There are no more new ones, so we are planning to puhlish them for use hy future Ielfersonians to save them the trouhle of reinventing them. The Senior Class has wrestled with one million tests, the answers of which, laid end to end, are just enough to pave the way from your home to the auditorium at Brooklyn Technical High School-for which God he praised.
