I'm noT reTerring To The school building called Thomas JeTTer- son I-ligh School, buT To The very pulsaTing hearT oT iTs busy inTerior, iTs Throbbing acTiviTy-represenTing parT oT me ThaT will remain eTched on my mind long aTTer my hair Turns gray and my sTeps begin To TalTer. I'II open This book TwenTy years Trom now and smile wisTTully as I recall all The Tun and scrapes which only healThy, exuberanT youTh can really enioy. l'II remember how we seniors would scornTully order Treshmen ouT oT our way as we walked haughTily Through The halls. I-low I envy Those Treshies nowl I'll remember dressing Tor gym, praying Tor The bell in The law class, Tearing aT my hair in bookkeeping, and biTing my nails beTore The English RegenTs. AY BACK IN '45 BASKETBALL Year in and year ouT The Jeffmen have had vicTorious combinafionsy The Posnacks and Shuckmans of The 2O's, The Garfinkles and Kaplinskys of The 3O's, and The Boykoffs and GoTkins of The 4O's. Jefferson has been gifTed wiTh brillianT players and wonderful coaches: Mr. John McNulTy, Mr. Ed Delaney, Mr. Mac l-lodesblaTT, and now Mr. Sam Schoenfeld. These men are To be Thanked for Their parT in keeping Jefferson in The baskeTball limelighT. Our senior class enTered The school in February, l94I, in The midsT of a hecTic baskerball season. ln The Jeff lineup were The famous David and GoliaTh combine, l-larry Thigh pockeTsl Boykoff, 6' 9 , and l-ly GoTkin The 5' 8 spark plug, Kelly Broffman, Dave Simon, and Larry BarneTT. This guinTeT, coached by Mr. Mac l-lodesblaTT, was a powerful one, wiTh plenTy of heighT, speed, ball handling, and good seT-shoTs. l-lowever we losT To Jackson lin a sudden-deaTh Thrillerl aT Madison Square Garden before a capaciTy crowd. We were deeply grieved aT This loss. The fuTure looked black, especially since The compleTe firsT five and numerous reserves graduaTed ThaT Term. However, fighfing againsT heavy odds, The new coach, Mr. Samuel Schoenfeld, builT a formidable ouTfiT around a nucleus of Co-CapTains Lenny Fried, Leon Girshek, and Joe KornblaTT. The l94I- l942 season saw diminuTiveJoe KornblaTT reach sTardom, and wifnessed The rapid developmenT of Two laTer' heroes, Sid Tanembaum and Max Zaslofsky. The Jeff Team ended iTs schedule wiTh a Tie for firsT place wiTh EasTern DisTricT, buT losT ouT in a playoff conTesT, 3l-30. V ln l942-IQ43 we had six seasoned veTerans in Sid Tanenbaum, Max Zaslofsky, Leon Girshek, Ralph Greenberg, Jack Gordon, and ArTie Rosen. As The season progressed, The Team added anoTher capable reserve in Jack Williky, and we won The divisional crown, alfhough we losT in The guarTer-finals To Madison, 38-29. Sid Tanembaum deservedly earned The all-scholasTic raTing besTowed upon him. The T943-T944 squad wenT To The fronT wiTh The highly TouTed Cap- Tain Max Zaslofsky, Jack Gordon, and Jack Williky. Playing againsT some heavily favored clubs like Boys, Tech, and STuyvesanT, The Nicklemen really showed greaTness and deTerminaTion by Thoroughly defeaTing all Three opponenTs. Zaslofsky was sensafional, averaging over fifTeen poinTs per game, and 'showing wonderful Team play. 23 Q 1
