18 PIECES OF EIGHT HAT OF IT? ITH Ring Lardner's kind permission, I should like to address to you, in his searching manner, a question which serves as the ififffffi title of his recent book, 'WVHAT GF IT ? You are graduating this month -WHAT QF IT? If to you this receiving of a diploma from high school means the end of all serious study-if it gives you the impression that you are now a full- Hedged adult, that you need no further education and that you are perfectly qualified, just as you are, to carry on for the rest of your life-then your teachers have the right to ask you, in disappointment and in scorn, You're graduating? NVHAT QF ITPU If marching in the procession on graduation night and receiving the congratulations and applause of your relatives and friends are the all-in-all for which you have waited and worked these many years- then your parents, who have so hopefully and so longingly looked for- ward to this glorious hour, have the right, disillusioned and broken- hearted, to ask, You're graduating? WHAT OF IT? lint-if being called a graduate is a challenge to you to begin a second and better period in your life, wherein you intend to try to secure for yourself all the worthwhile knowledge that is obtainable- if it acts as a summons to you, so to mold your character that you will be a credit to your loved ones, as well as a source of pride and help to the community in which you dwell-then the question which heads this message is superliuous, and we who have tried to instill in you a love for your fellowman and a zeal to serve your country, will feel that our efforts have not been in vain. The three years which you spent in these halls, have, I hope, en- abled you to make lasting friendships, and to realize that just as man does not live by bread alone, so no person may feel self-suflicient and desirous of going his own way, unresponsive to the needs and the problems of other mortals. These are interesting, yet critical times, especially for those who, like you, are commencing such a wonderful journey through life. Perhaps the splendid advice uttered by the prophet Micah, some twenty-live hundred years ago: To do justice, ,to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God, will help you go through that journey, happily and usefully. May you go on from strength to strength, ever eager to justify the high hopes and the lofty aspirations which your parents and your friends here in Thomas jefferson dream for you!
