IN HE BE INNIN 2 - Silver Anniversary ln the beginning 119601 there was a large pasture south of East Hampden, a two-way street, and east of South Holly, graded and graveled but not blacktop- ped. And among these virgin pastures did the Denver Public Schools erect an edifice called Thomas jefferson lunior- Senior High School. And, lo, the feeling was good among many teachers who knew they'd be moving from a junior high school to a HIGH SCHOOL! But, as it came to pass, there were those, especially the senior class who would have graduated at South High School, who were sore of- fended. They came to the Promised Land with trepidation because they lov- ed their homeland. But came they did and traditions were made that are still being followed these past 24 years. When the pilgrims arrived, to the east were grazing cows and horses. No houses could be seen to the eastern horizon. Hampden Freeway was still in some highway engineer's imaginings, the parking lots were not paved, no landscaping was evident and yet the pilgrims Q9 through 121 wended their way to 3950 South Holly. Inside they found a brick wall sur- rounding a dirt pit where the auditorium was to be, the gym had been finished as had the lunchroom, classrooms were without student desks, chalk or bulletin boards. Students and teachers had to sidestep science equipment, business equipment, books and other parapher- nalia stacked in the halls-and the worst-teachers and students had to put up with the banging of jackham- mers, the hammering of nails, workmen coming into rooms at all times and what could generally be called 'lan opening but not on a grand scale. lt was easy to get lost-no rooms had numbers on them. So traditions were born, clubs were named, publications became a reality, drama 'productions were presented and the mighty Spartan name became synonymous with victory in the Denver athletic league. Down through the years Tl has blossomed into a school proud of its traditions, proud of its heritage and no longer ashamed of being that great school on the hill. Thomas jefferson High School since its inception in 1960 has serviced over 45,000 students who now can be found around the globe. lt's not unusual to walk into a restaurant in Mexico City, a store in New York City, watch a film, visit the governor's office, see a World Olympics, visit Hollywood, enroll in many colleges, shop in a store, ask for legal advice and have health checked among many other varied tasks confronted today, and not find a Spartan. Where are you from? l'Denver, Colorado. , 'Oh, I went to Thomas jefferson High School. You wouldn't by chance know... With this issue of the Aristocrat, twenty-five years of memories are with over 45,000 Americans. The opening section for this book is appropriately called Q 0 9 0 0
