Spartans Raise Voices in Song and Speech A varied curriculum allowed Spartans to pursue many endeavors-from the tedium of regular academic work to classes which brought forth gifts and talents of many. Faces, names linger in memory as year fades T WAS a year often dominated by big names. President Reagan captured the country's attention and ran all over Walter Mondale. Singer Michael Jackson zoomed around the country with his tour, in- cluding a visit to Denver. And gymnast Mary Lou Retton captured the nation's fancy in the Olympics. y The 1984 headlines in Denver often focused on politi- cians such as Gov. Richard D. Lamm and Mayor Feder- ico Pena. But there were many others making news. They spoke out when they saw injustices - and some- times suffered the consequences. They found personal victory - and then quietly went on with their lives. They made us laugh over their folly. And cry over their tragedies. The Years Move on These are not in the future: Out fumishings: Brass, floral sheets, answering machines, Dhurries, overdone country, chintz, fussy floral displays. Out food: Pasta salads, sprouts, tofu, brie, sushi, chocolate chip cookies, croissants, mesquite cooking, kiwi, cappuccino. Out fashion: Fingerless gloves, sloppiness, mannish underwear, miniskirts, running shoes worn with business attire, briefcases, sunglasses named after sports cars, gelled hair, gender bending. Out travel: Santa Fe, time-share resorts, station wagons, Dallas and Houston, package trips to Mex- ico, Las Vegas. Out people: Michael jackson, johnny Carson, loan Rivers, loan Collins, lane Fonda, Francis Ford Coppola, Tom Selleck, Burt Reynolds, lohn Travolta, Elizabeth Taylor, Robert De Niro, Dan Rather, Faye Dunaway, Sylvester Stallone, Mary Decker, Bob Guccione, john De Lorean, Clara Peller, Mr. T., beauty queens. lust out: Movie remakes, celebrity beauty books, smoking, hap- py hour, theme discos, break dancing, boxing. Out at Tl: Graduating without the basic essentials - 1985 became the year of accoun- tability and a Uback to the basics movement. 28 Silver Anniversary
