X we 4'x X 1973 seemed to be a year of warning. lt was a year of shorte ages, political scandals, and the energy crisis. It appeared to be giving us signs of what to expect in the future if we don't change our life styles. The gas shortage was a hindrance to almost everyone as several gas stations kept shorter hours for extended periods of time. This shortage led to a need for better metro transit systems, harmed many businesses depending on tourist response, caused a down- fall in large car productions, and called for all Americans to co- operate with new laws. The 55 m.p.h. speed limit led to a mild disturbance by the truckers with their blockades and threats. They tried to prove that their trucks got better mileage at 70 m.p.h. than at 55 m.p.h., but failed the test. Not only was there a shortage in gas, but in foods as well. The beef shortage especially caused inconveniences among people. ln Colorado, the grocer's strike added to this as many stores were forced to close, and even the ones that could remain open had counters nearly empty, as there was no one to stock them. Another event concerning Americans and of special interest to people in Colorado was the brief appointment of former Gover- nor John Love as Energy Czar. However, due to various circum- stances, he was soon replaced by William Simon. 1973 is a year that should be looked back upon with concern. Watergate and the energy crisis are two additional events of major importance, but even these few listed are indicative of what is to come if we keep our selfish ways. The American people must work together if these problems are to end. Silver Anniversary 17

For one thing, it is our country's 200th birthday-- although by summer we may have heard too much about it. It is also Colorado's Centennial, which is a little more special since not quite as many people are talking about it. It is also election year, and leapyear. Some Americans may be somewhat cynical about electing another president, but others are more inspired to examine the candidates after past events. Of course, the most important thing happening this year is the graduation of this class of seniors. Our class has an important task to carry out. First semester, Bicentennial Club activities included a visit to the stock show, and to the celebration of the Chinese New Year in Central City. Second semester the club elected new officers. They made plans to have an assembly in March, to attend the opening of the Opera House in Central City, to see the musical Paint Your Wagon at U.N.C., and to attend the l-lolly Horse Racing at Gateway Downs Race- track in April.
