Teaching the elements of grammar was not the sole purpose of Thomas Jefferson's English department. The English faculty strived to prepare their students for the future by developing logical, clear expession in speaking and writing. Students in the literature classes learned to appreciate the works of great literary figures from the past and present. Speed-reading and speech were also offered by the department to aid the student in school and community life.
