LEFT: HOLY TRINITY EPISOPAL CHURCH. IN GRAHAMVILLE, THIS HUNDRED YEAR-OLD BUILDING RESULTED FROM ACTIVITY OF A CONGREGATION THAT BEGAN BEFORE 1820. IN LATE 1864 THE CHURCH, BEING USED AS FEDERAL HEADQUARTERS, ESCAPED THE FLAMES OF WAR WHEN NEARLY EVERY BUILDING IN GRAHAMVILLE SUCCUMBED. BUT THE CHURCH'S ORIGINAL FURNISHINGS WERE DESECRATED AND LOOTEDQ EVEN ITS BIBLE WAS CARRIED AWAY. THE HOLY COM- MUNION SILVER WAS SAVED BY A YOUNG MEMBER WHO SLIPPED INTO THE CHURCH AND BROUGHT IT OUT, ALMOST UNDER THE NOSES OF THE OFFICERS. IN 1928, THE LONG STOLEN BIBLE WAS DISCOVERED IN THE AT- TIC OF A NEW YORK MUSIC PUBLISHER AND WAS RETURNED BY HIM. A UNION OFFICER'S SCRIBBLED NAME IS LEGIBLE ON THE FLY- LEAF. THE BIBLE IS NOW A TREASURED KEEPSAKE OF THE CHURCH. BELOW-ROBERTVILLE BAPTIST CHURCH. THIS OLD AN- TIBELLUM CHURCH IS ALMOST CONCEALED BY THE LIMBS OF LIVEOAKS PENDANTED WITH SPANISH MOSS, AND ITS REFURNISHED WHITENESS SPARKLES FROM A WOODLAND SETTING.

LEFT GILLISONVILLE BAPTIST CHURCH. AT ONE TIME THIS ANCIENT ANTIBELLUM CHURCH WAS THE HEAD- QUARTERS FOR CIVIL WAR FEDERAL TROOPS. FOR THIS REASON IT WAS SAVED FROM SHERMAN'S DESTRUC- TION. THIS MAGNIFICENT STRUCTURE HAS WITHSTOOD ALL OF THE YEARS AND STILL STANDS ACROSS FROM THE FORMER GILLISONVILLE SQUARE, WHERE A COURTHOUSE ONCE STOOD. THE COLONIAL APPEAR- ANCE OF THE CHURCH IS THE SAME AS IT WAS WHEN FIRST CONSTRUCTED IN 1845. IT'S BEAUTY IS IEN- HANCED BY A QUARTET OF COLUMNS AND THE HUGE OAK DOORS WHICH LEAD INTO THE BUILDING. ON THE INSIDE ARE THE SAME FAMILY PEWS WHICH WERE PLACED IN IT ORIGINALLY. WTHE BALCONY WHICH SEATED THE SLAVES IS STILL IN PLACE AND STILL USED. - BOTTOM, JASPER COUNTY COURT HOUSE.
