This class was the first grade class in 1970 when the school was founded, and the first class to graduate after attending Thomas Hart for twelve years. Of the twelve seniors, ten were members of the original first grade class. Two additional members joined the ranks in later years. The entire Senior Class agreed on certain aspects that have changed their lives. Attending Thomas Hart has influenced us in such ways as teaching us how to get along with others, accept responsibility, become more independent, and has helped each of us grow as individuals. In a poll of the Sr. Class the favorite musical groups included: Journey, Lynnard Skynnard, The Commadores, Alabama, Air Supply, David Gates, Jimmy Buffet, Christopher Cross, and of course, the Fantastic Shakers. Some of the favorite songs were: Sailing, Rocky Top, Oh, No, Beth, Sharing the Night Together, Leather and Lace, You're More Than A Number, and Old Flame. Three of the favorite movies include Halloween, Arthur, and Stripes. Most popular actresses were: Jamie Lee Curtis, Barbra Streisand, Olivia Newton-John, and especially Loni Anderson. The favorite actors were Robert Redford, Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Richard Pryor, Michael Landon, and Dudley Moore. The favorite foods of the seniors were: steak, hamburgers, pizza, French fries, moon pies, and the all-time favorite, Mrs. Gardner's biscuits. By far the favorite pastime of the Sr. Class is Having a GOOD TIME! The past twelve years have been full of good times, as well as bad, but no matter how far we go from Thomas Hart or each other, we will always remember, with happiness, the years of friendship we shared and the time we had together to grow. 23 Cxs v Angela Annual Staff, Cheerleader, Freshman Class Secretary, Senior Class Treasurer, Student Council, Tennis. Under the guidance of Mrs. Hawley, who not only served as advisor but also as photogra- pher, the final draft of the memory book for the 1981-82 school year was mailed for pub- lication. Returning editor, Barbara Roseveare, along with assistant editors, Renee Cooley and Mi- chael Greene, worked ex- tremely long hours drawing layouts, not once or twice, but as many as three times, crop- ping pictures, and writing copy. Scott Wilds helped a great deal while learning the tricks of the trade. All in all it was a produc- tive year and a most enjoyable one at that. We wish to thank Jane Eas- terling — Homecoming and senior photos; Jimmy Gregory — football and basketball pic- tures; David Roseveare — vol- leyball pictures; Robby Wallace — senior photos; and Mandy Hawley — pictures and artwork throughout the annual. Hornet Staff: Renee Cooley, Barbara Roseveare, Michael Greene. Student Council Officers for 1981-82 are: Scott Wilds, Vice-President; Beth Newsome, Secretary Treasurer; Rob Gardner, President. The Student Council mem- bers for the year 1981-82 are chosen from each homeroom, grades 8-12. Annual elections are held to elect officers. The Student Council under- takes a number of jobs throughout the year, such as the yearly bonfire and Home- coming activities. The Council could not be what they are without the time, energy, and leadership of their sponsor, Mrs. Roseveare. Her efforts are appreciated by all the members. This year the bylaws were amended in order to give a greater num- ber of students the opportunity to be members. On December 9, 1981, an installation of both Junior and Senior Beta Club members was held before the student body in order to recognize these academically talented individuals. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Paula Davis, the Sen- ior Beta Club strove to maintain high standards of scho- lastic achievement at Thomas Hart Academy. V. The Junior Beta Club, sponsored by Mrs. Lee Hicks, also had bake sales and decorated the lunchroom for holidays. you're q Good Afan, Char i'e Brown The 1980-81 Drama Club of THA presented its first production, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown!, on three consecutive nights, March 26, 27, and 28. Di- rected by Susan Weathersbee, the play was a tre- mendous success and sparked a new interest in dra- ma at Thomas Hart. On Friday, during the pep rally, Barthenia Pitts, alias, Bart Pitts, was crowned the Honorary Home- coming Queen for 1981-82. PTO Booster Club This year the annual staff wanted to devote a page to two very special groups of people — the PTO and the Booster Club. Their many fund-rais- ing efforts contribute greatly to the school's bud- get and help provide many extras which Hart would not otherwise be able to afford. The PTO sponsors the Hart-a-Fair, fruit sale, aluminum and steel can collections and a raffle. The Booster Club sells memberships and sponsors barbeque suppers, the paper drive, and a horse show. Joint- ly the two organizations sponsor a float for THA in the Christman parade. We would like to extend our thanks to the PTO and Booster Club for their tremendous efforts. PTO Officers: 1. Not only was this a victory for Barbara, but for our football team as well. They beat Andrews by a score of 20-6. Barbara was selected as our queen by popular vote from a slate of six Seniors. We are all proud of Barbara in her efforts and accomplishments as she has been in- volved in almost all aspects of THA. Aside from her outstanding academic abilities, Barbara has been involved in almost too much to mention. She has been an active member of the Sr. Beta Club, Student Council, and Drama Club. She has been editor of the annual staff for the past two years, a Varsity cheerleader, the captain of the volleyball team, a basketball player, and baseball manager. She has always given support and kind- ness to her fellow students and given of herself to those in need. Miss Roseveare received the crown from James Cox, Jr., the chairman of the Board at THA. The crownbearer was Jer- emy Clark and Emily Burry and Renee Cooley were the 1st and 2nd runners-up, respectively. “Congratulations Barbara! You earned it! Coach Jones has a strong administrative back- ground and has been coaching football for over thirty years. Only recently. Coach Jones served as principal and head football coach at Bishopville High School. Coach Jones attended Newberry College and played football, basketball, and baseball as a freshman. He later attended the University of South Carolina where he earned his Master of Education degree. In his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis. Coach Jones has strong leadership qualities and enjoys teaching others about the sport that he knows so well. The football team this past year was small and inexperienced, but with Coach Jones at the helm, the future looks brighter. Coach Me Waters Miss Sheila McWaters has been a vital part of the coaching staff at THA for the past five years. During this time, she has coached Girls' Volleyball, Varsity and Junior Varsity Basket- ball, Softball, and Tennis. She has an excellent relationship with the team and strives to get each girl to give her best effort. Coach McWaters, a competitive athlete herself, works to instill that spirit of competition in her players and she has succeeded in bringing out the hidden talents of her girls. This year, the girls' volleyball team had a season of 18-1. Aside from being regional winners, the girls also won the State Cham- pionship held at THA on October 20, 1981. The THA softball team also won the region- al championship and went to the state play- offs. Coach Guy O'Neal joined the Thomas Hart staff in September of 1980. He brought a great love of sports to the school and helped to foster in- terest in basketball and baseball. He led the boys' varsity basketball team to the region title in 1980-81. They were finally defeated by St. Stephens Academy in the state playoffs. Coach O'Neal also coached the baseball O’Neal team last year. Although there were very few players on the team, the ones that did partici- pate had a great time. Coach O'Neal no longer teaches at Thomas Hart, but he still finds time to coach the bas- ketball team. Everyone greatly appreciates the time and effort that Coach O'Neal gives to the school and to its students. Coach Frampton Harry Frampton has coached the boys' ten- nis team here at Thomas Hart for two years. Coach Frampton has done a great deal to bring tennis to Hartsville and in creating a growing interest in tennis at THA. The 1980 boys' team had a 10-2 season record and the Coach Pitts 1981 team went to the state semi-finals against Catawba Academy of Rock Hill. We are sorry to say that Coach Frampton will not be coach- ing at THA during the 1982 season, but his time and effort will never be forgotten. Tricia Pitts has been coaching girls tennis for the past six years. An enthusiastic athlete, Mrs. Pitts not only coaches but participates as well. She has won trophies and titles, the most notable of her achievements is she is the only woman so far to have become both a golf champion and a tennis champion at the Harts- ville Country Club. On April 6, 1981, Mrs. Pitts carried the ten- nis team to Hilton Head where they served as ball girls for the Family Circle Magazine Ten- nis Cup IX. This was a great learning exper- ience for the girls as they had the opportunity to meet some of the top tennis players in the world. The team had a very successful season in 1980-81. They were runners-up in the region and went to the first round of the State Play- Offs. Much thanks goes to Tricia Pitts for her tireless effort and complete devotion to mak- ing the tennis team a competitive and enthu- siastic group of girls. 46 Coaches Trophies Thomas Hart has a winning tradition. Hardly a year goes by that some trophy is not won by one of our sports teams. Long hours of demanding practice, making mistakes and correcting them, and giving 100% during the games are all reasons why our athletes are winners. These efforts paid off in big dividends as five trophies were brought home by the sports program. Four region championship titles and one runner-up title topped the list. THIS SPACE RESERVED FOR FUTURE THOMAS HART ACADEMY TROPHIES Assistant Coach Bannister . Dr. Brooks Bannister is in his second year as assistant coach of the varsity football team. In the latter part of the 1980 season he stepped into the head coach's shoes after he left and helped the Hornets complete their schedule. In 1981, Dr. Bannister returned to assist Coach Jones with the term. Dr. Bannister volunteered a great deal of time to help the Hornets train and help them improve their plays. Not only a coach, he also served as the team physician. It was comfort- ing to know that if a player was injured during the game we had a doctor on the sidelines. Dr. Bannister's unselfish dedication to foot- ball at Thomas Hart does not go unnoticed. His efforts are greatly appreciated. Coach Hawley B. Boys' basketball plays a very important part in developing the players' athletic skills. Mr. Hawley is in his second year of coaching this team and has helped these boys prepare for future years in the sport. Mr. Hawley has a great interest in bring- ing sports to THA. He realizes the impor- tant of a good athletic foundation and has volunteered to coach the team again this year. With growing interest in junior varsity sports, the future looks bright for Thomas Hart B. Boys' basketball. 47 rom left to right: Teresa Casper, Shawn Tedder, Rambel Blackman, Beth Gibson, Angela Andrews, Emily Burry, Barbara Roseveare, Shari Williams, and Renee Cooley. Varsity Cheerleaders The Varsity cheerleaders worked hard this year to raise school spirit. During the week of Homecoming the cheerleaders sponsored Spirit Week and on the day of the pep rally they gave the football team a dinner. In addition to this, pep rallies were held for home games. Head cheerleaders: Football — Emily Burry Basketball — Shari Williams J.V. Cheerleaders There was no J.V. football team this year, but the cheerleaders more than made up for it by pro- viding enthusiastic support for their basketball team. Three new- comers have been added to the squad. Along with the returning girls, they have helped to pro- mote the spirit at T.H.A. and make this their best year ever. 1981 State Champs The volleyball team ended their regular season with a 16-1 record and a 4- 0 record in region play. They won the Region IV-A title and went on to the State Tournament. In the tournament the girls had a bye the first round and played Catawba in the second round and moved on to the finals against Lord Berkeley of Moncks Corner. Lord Berkeley is the team who defeated THA in the state finals last year. This year THA won 15-8 and 15-13. This gave them the State Championship for Class A schools in S.C. Thomas Hart ended their over all season with an 18-1 record with the one loss coming from Hammond Academy of Columbia. In three short years of volleyball, THA has won their region twice and was the State Runner-Up last year and the State Champion this year. According to Coach Sheila McWaters, This year's volleyball team was one of the best teams I have ever coached. They were dedicated to the game and worked hard to have such an impressive record. THA has a great deal to be proud of when it comes to the volleyball team. I have never been more happy or pleased in my entire life. Hard work does pay off! Coach Sheila McWaters 1981 SCISAA State Volleyball Champs: Kneeling: Julie Williamson and Barbara Rose- veare. Coach j.W. Jones 52 53 54 The football team went through their first season under new coach, J.W. Jones, this year. The team was small in number and had many inexperienced players. The team consisted of only three seniors and four juniors with any playing experience. Almost every play- er who started had to play both offense and defense, giving T.H.A. a serious handicap. Although the season was not a good one, the team learned much about the game from Coach Jones' pa- tience and dedication to the team. 55 Basketball The boys Varsity team started out the season with high hopes for a successful campaign. The defending Region Champions hoped to not only defend their title, but to win the conference crown as well. Although three starters were lost to graduation, three transfers and one Junior Varsity player advancing to Varsity gave the Hornets a lot of talent and good hopes for the season. Along with these players were five returning players from last year's team. The Hornets had only nine players but hoped to have a successful team.
