Art Hawley Art Hawley, the new headmas- ter at Thomas Hart, has brought added enthusiam and energy to the school. Besides his chief re- sponsibility of running the school, he is actively involved in all areas of the school life from coaching the junior varsity boys basketball team to making needed repairs to the buildings. A native of Florence and a 1972 graduate of the University of S.C., Mr. Hawley majored in biology and minored in Chemistry. He taught science for several years before becoming an administra- tor. He comes to Hartsville from Waccamaw Academy in Conway. Mr. Hawley has a genuine interest in the students and an open and friendly way with them. He knows how to laugh and have fun, but he also knows when to be serious. He is a firm, but fair disciplinar- ian, and handles student problems with concern and compassion. He has earned the respect and appre- ciation of the students at T.H.A. 24 Baseball Randy Lowe received both the Coach's Award and Players' Award for outstanding athlete in baseball during the May, 1980 Awards Program. The girls' tennis team worked very hard last year and with only nine players on the team, they had a good season. Coach Tricia Pitts spent many hours helping the girls improve their tennis skills. With the loss of only one senior on the 1980 team they expect to have an even better season in 1981. On the boys' tennis team the top two seeded players, Scott Wilds and Tony Floyd, will return this year to lead the team. Last year Coach Harry Frampton worked with the boys to develop and strengthen their talents. They are looking forward to a good season this year. During the Athletic Awards Banquet last May the girls' tennis Coach's Award was given to Becky Reep. The Player's Award was given to Stacie Wil- liams. On the boys' team Scott Wilds received both the Coach's and Players' Award. 27 Volleyball Team . . . ... A Team Wtih Class State Runners-Up . . . . . . Region Champs The Girls Volleyball Team ended their regular season 15-3 and 4-0 in region play. They went to Moncks Corner to play in the state Class A Tour- nament for private schools. The girls made it to the finals and played Lord Berkeley. They lost the match after taking Lord Berkeley to three games. Lord Berkeley has had a team for eight years and has been in tournament play before. The girls played very good and for a two-year team showed a lot of class. The team ended the season 17-4. We look forward to a good season next year because we only lose one player, Faith Williamson. Faith helped the team tremendously and she will be missed greatly. Serving as statistician and score- keeper for the volleyball team this year was Robin Chaplin. The Hornets lost the first five games to James F. Byrnes, St. Stephens, Thornwell, Lawrence Manning, and Carolina. The Hornets first victory came on the sixth week of the season when they defeated Andrews Academy 7-0. The Hornets lost two extremely close games to Lawrence Man- ning, when they scored on a trick play with less than a minute to play, and to Holly Hill, who scored the winning touchdown with less than three minutes to go. Thomas Hart ended the season with a 50-20 Homecoming victory over Andrews Academy. This was the seniors' last game and it really meant a lot to get this win. The Hornets will be graduating Raymond Threatt, Randy Lowe, Stephen Threatt, Garrett Gardner, and Will Nickles from the line, and John Moyd, Tony Floyd, and Trent Tedder from the backfield. 1980-81 Squad Kneeling: Garrett Gardner, Todd Talbert, Scott Lee, Bartley Gardner, David Griggs, Tony Floyd, John Mody, Trent Tedder, Dean Scarborough, Bart Pitts, and Angela Casper, manager. Standing: Robin Chaplin, manager, Randy Lowe, Mitch Talbert, Phil Whittle, Artie Yarborough, Raymond Threatt, Rob Gardner, Fuller King, Tod Easterling, Will Nickles, Stephen Threatt, and Julie Williamson, man- ager. I wonder if Roger Staubach had it this tough 4. Whatcha got in that bottle boy? 5. Another one bites the dust 35 Junior Varsity Football Small in Size but Big At Hart With only four of five players from last year's Dirty Dozen squad returning, this year's J.V. team was very young and inex- perienced. This did not stop them, even though they were outnumbered and outsized by every team they played. Coaches Lawrence Lowe and Billy Mullis were proud of the Hornet team because They never gave up . . and their size didn't seem to count because their hearts were willing to make the effort. 1980 Squad Marty Robbins, Greg Brown, Ed Coker, Brian Stewart, and John Lawton. Bob Gardner, Tommy Hodge, Todd Talbert, Tracy Lee, Craig Gandy, and Fred Millen. Fred Estep, Hinson Hodge, Mark Roseveare, Louise Lawton, man- ager, and Beth Outlaw, manager. 36 w kb? WILLIAMSON- Faith is the only Senior on the team. She was captain of the team and played point guard. Faith has a good outside shot and han- dles the ball well. We relied on her for a lot of our scoring. EMILY BURRY-Emily is a Junior. She was co- captain of the team. She's a good ball han- dler and shooter. Emily is a good foul shooter, as well as rebounder, and has a good outside shot. RENEE COOLEY-Re- nee is a Junior. She played center and was used inside a great deal. Renee's a good outside shooter and rebounder, as well as a good free throw shooter. BETH GIBSON-Beth, a Junior, did not play basketball last year, but did play junior varsity in 8th and 9th grade. She tries very hard and is aggressive on the court. Beth has quick hands and is very good on defense. BARBARA ROSE- VEARE-Barbara is a Ju- nior and this is her first year of playing basket- ball. She was a quick learner, tried very hard, and helped us with our rebounding. Barbara was very en- thusiastic. 38 V 4-A Runners- Up TERESA CASPER-Tere- sa, a Sophomore, hadn't played basket- ball since 7th or 8th grade. She was a very quick and good defen- sive player. She has a number of things to learn about team bas- ketball, but she was an asset to the team. SHAWN TEDDER- Shawn, a Sophomore, played Junior Varsity last year. She was very aggressive on defense and was a good re- bounder. Shawn changed her style of shooting this year and helped us on our of- fense and defense. MARY LYNNE THREATT-Mary Lynne, a Sophomore, hadn't played basket- ball since 8th grade. She's very strong in- side. She needed some work on the basic fun- damentals, but helped a great deal with our rebounding. SHARI WILLI AMS- Shari, a Sophomore, played Junior Varsity last year. Her height helped us inside on our rebounding and she also helped with our offense inside. She is an over 50% foul shooter. TONY FLOYD-Tony is a senior and was very important to our suc- cess this year. He was our point guard and a good team leader. He shoots very well and knows how to move the ball and look for good shots. JOHN MOYD-John is also a senior. With his well-rounded ability, he was a good ball- handler and re- bounder. John's quickness also strengthened our de- fense. RAYMOND THREAT- Raymond is the other senior on the team. He played forward and center. He is a big man, but has good ability to move. His re- bounding has helped in our success. TOD E ASTERLING- Tod, a junior, played forward and on the back line in defense. His leaping ability, his rebounding, and his good shot around the basket was an asset to the team. Varsity Boys Basket- ball Region 4-A Champs ROB GARDNER-Rob, a junior, is one of our best shooters. He played a swing-man position on offense. Rob has good moves with the ball and a soft touch on his shots. He led the team in both scoring and rebound- ing. SCOTT LEE-Scott is a sophomore. He played guard and swing-man. He has gained exper- ience and has done his part in making the sea- son successful. SCOTT WILD-Scott is a sophomore and played both guard and forward. He needs some experience, but has progressed quickly and was willing to give his best effort. ARTIE YARBOR- OUGH-Artie, a sopho- more, played forward. He has the ability to shoot and rebound well. He was a strong back-up man for the team. y39 An Unforgettable Finish GIRLS TAKE REGION RUNNER-UP TROPHY After a slow start at the beginning of the season, the Hornet girls came back to claim the Region Runner-Up title in a very exciting game against Darlington Academy. Losing by only two points, the girls went into the conference tournament and lost to Laurence Manning, the first place team in the conference. With the experience gained this year and with the loss of only one senior, the Hornet girls should be strong contenders in the conference next year. 40 BOYS CAPTURE REGION TITLE In the finals of the region tournament at Avalon Academy on February 25, the boys won the championship in a thrilling triple overtime contest. In the final minute with the Hornets down by three, Tony Floyd made a three point play to tie the game. Avalon regained the lead with two free throws with 15 seconds left. Rob Gardner rebounded his own missed shot and tied it up as the buzzer sounded. In the first overtime the opponents held the ball. With 10 seconds to go, Avalon scored. Everyone thought THA had lost but with :02 left on the clock, Rob Gardner threw up a miracle 35-foot shot that tied the game and sent it into another overtime. No one scored in the second overtime. In the third overtime Raymond Threatt scored the winning points and with five seconds left John Moyd iced the game with a lay-up shot. Junior Varsity Basketball . . . An Exciting Year! Sitting: Lynn Harding, Kim Cromartie, Lacie Blackman, Lynn Cheely. Standing: Ashley Pitts, Angela Casper, Gina Poison, Michelle Campbell, Kim Hicks, Julie Williamson, Beth Outlaw, Louise Lawton, Coach Sheila McWaters. The Junior Varsity team worked hard this year under the coaching of Sheila McWaters. They lost two players that moved up to Varsity and still ended up with a winning season. This has been a very exciting and successful year. 42 B Boys Basketball Always Willing! The 8 Team Boys Basketball Team is comprised of boys in grades 6-9. These boys usually faced teams this year who listed several lOh graders on their roster. Although usually outmanned as a result, the B Boys have shown tireless determination and refused to become discouraged. Although they did not win many games, they proved themselves to be winners in a larger sense. They all exhibited spirit and true sportsmanship and were always willing to try no matter what the odds. We couldn't be prouder of them if they had won every game. 43 Th Hornet Staff This year's annual was first conceived at the annual yearbook camp workshop at Wofford. The editorial staff attended the workshop this past summer. Since that time many hours have been spent creating this year's Hornet. Pictures have been taken, and then re-taken. Copy has been written and re-written, and then re-written again. Layouts have been drawn again and again. Even though many hours and hard work have gone into this book, the Annual Staff sincerely hopes that it will keep your memories of this school year in your heart for many years to come. They also collected canned goods to be distributed to needy families through a local church. Another of their projects was col- lecting Campbell soup labels to pur- chase needed equipment for the school. Sitting: John Lawton, Kim Hicks, Beth Newsome, Michelle Campbell. At halftime of the Thomas Hart-Andrews football game, Kim was crowned Homecoming Queen. Out of the eight Senior girls running, the students in grades 8-12 chose her by popular vote. Everyone at T.H.A. recognizes Kim for all of her contributions to Thom- as Hart. Not only does she now carry the title of Homecoming Queen, but she is in her second year as Head of the varsity cheerleading squad. She is an active member of the annual staff. Senior Beta Club, and is one of our top six players on the tennis team. Outside of her activities in the school she has been a member of the Prestwood Cloggers dance group for about six years. Everywhere Kim goes she carries with her the enthusiasm, spirit, and congeniality that shows just how much she really loves her school. Kim is the epitome of the spirit of Thomas Hart and represents the true meaning of a Hornet.
