The Hornet • 1979 • upon a time there was a small, private school named Thomas Hart Academy in Hartsville, South Carolina, where the Hornets lived. At this school lived many, many happy people of many different ages. These Hornets laughed and played and studied and learned, and after twelve long years, graduated and went out into the world to live happily ever after. This school published a yearbook called the HORNET. This is the story of the school year 1978-1979 and the memories that will be cherished in all the years to come. The strong determination of the Felines, coached by Howard Coker, and Butch Williams, did not stop that Tiger teamwork. The Tuned-up Tigers were coached by Wesley Brand, Bart Pitts, and Rob Gardner. Celeste Coker of the Felines led the scoring with a touchdown in the first quarter. On a sneak play, Sobie Soles brought the score to 8-6 at the half, with the Junior Sophomore team leading. Things looked grim for the Tigers until Jina Kelley scored the winning touchdown in the last few exciting moments of play. The THA line deserves some long-overdue credit, says Asst. Coach DeWitt. They are one of the best lines in the state. The entire team worked hard and gave 100% even though starting Quarterback Chris Marshall was out for the first five weeks because of knee surgery. All in all it was a good season with an 8-3 record. For the first time in several years, the junior varsity team was competitive in size and age. With six starting ninth graders on the team, the Hornets worked their way up to a 5-2 record for the season. Quarterback Bart Pitts, working with the tough blocking of Scott Lee and Rob Gardner, was able to take advantage of the strong running attack of Tod Easterling and Scott Gardner's cluth pass receptions, to spark the team to victory. Teamwork was the name of the game as the junior varsity squad chalked up their first winning season in the history of the school. l 55 A Winning Attitude A Winning Spirit Bookkeeper Gay Joyner and Statistics Keeper Chandler Reep GIRLS SQUAD Jina Kelley 5 Chandler Reep 10 Pam Bateman 32 Becky Reep 4 Staci Williams 35 Teressa Griggs 3 Danette Yarborough 45 Faith Williamson 41 Lib King 31 Linda Morris 40 Olivia Oliver 30 Ann Bryant 34 Robin Chaplin mgr. This is unfortunate but because of the final dead-line in January, we are unable to cover this year's activities and last year's seem to much out of date. We do want the teams to know, however, that THA is proud of you and your record. In 1978, the Baseball team won recognition for the first time ever by capturing the conference title. Coach Jimmy DeWitt did an outstanding job in pulling together the winning team, many who had never played the sport before. We never seem to say this but we ARE proud of you! In the spring of 1978, the tennis team rallyed to it's best season yet. The THA netters were 6-2 overall and ranked second in the region. Two players have since graduated, but the prospects of another winning team are very good. Coached by Patrica Pitts and Sheila McWaters, the THA tennis team has come a long way since their first year.
