She, along with seven other girls sold Booster Club tickets from the last week in August until the week of the big game. Sales this year totaled $4,500 with Sobie selling a grand total of $1,200 herself. Chandler Reep was first runner-up with a total of $1,035 in sales. Silence filled the night air as both fans and contestants awaited the announcement of the homecoming queen for '77-'78. Votes had been cast earlier that day by everyone in grades 9-12 and the arrival of the big moment was soon to come. Suspense prevailed as Mr. Allen spoke: The first runner-up is Teressa Carter. And now, for the name you've all been waiting to hear . . . The winner . . . is . . . Lucy Reep! Cameras clicked and tears of joy filled the eyes of many as Robert Pitts, Chairman of the Board of Directors, crowned Lucy. The field was alive with well-wishers and congratulations came from every direction. Finally, the field cleared, the game resumed, and the Hornets crushed Avalon Academy 42-0. We've got to find a way to make you the reader, AWARE of exactly what we do. Each year hours of work, missed classes and severe cases of writers cramp all accompany this publication. The deadlines come and go, leaving Mrs. Gardner with several nervous wrecks to attend to. But, we're still here, healthy as ever, physically if not mentally!! Anyway, we appreciate your support, because without you, the students of T.H.A., there would be no HORNET 1978, Right? f t's for Qpp rtaaf OA 43 DAINTY DEVILS SCORCH ROWDY REBELS The Rowdy Rebels tangled with the Dainty Devils this year, on November 18. The first quarter started with a bang as the Devils returned the kickoff for the first touchdown of the game. The Rebels refused to be put down and at the end of the first quarter the score was tied 6-6. Halftime Ceremonies began with the crowning of the 1977 Powderpuff Queen, Joanne Moyd. During the last half, the Dainty Devils fired up their coals and rolled to a 36-12 victory. The coaches for the Rebels were Bond Nickles and Randy Lowe. The Devils were coached by Chris Marshall, Wes Brand, and Lawrence Holland. 45 46 THA The 1977 Record OPP 20 Holly Hill Academy 16 40 Richard Winn Academy 0 16 Calhoun Academy 22 27 Camden Military Academy 7 32 Lawrence Manning Academy 6 33 Heathwood Hall Academy 12 42 Avalon Academy 0 44 Byrnes Academy 6 10 Catawaba Academy (Upper State Playoffs) 19 SENIOR FOOTBALL PLAYERS The Seniors speak . . . As seniors, we are proud of the season we had. It's really a great feeling to know we were the first winning football team at THA. We just hope the rest of the team is as proud of the season as we are. THA should have an even better season next year. We'll be behind you all the way HORNETS! ■ Fred Moore - vioore 47 T-E-A-M-W-O-R-K! That was the name of the game this year in Thomas Hart football. The Hornets rolled to a 9- 2 season record, the best football record yet! During August, the football team began practicing and anticipating their first game against Holly Hill. Practice sometimes began at 6:00 A.M., ending at 8:00 A.M., then resuming in the evening. This dedication was well rewarded, as the Hornets defeated Holly Hill in a close battle, 20-16. In the regular season, Thomas Hart lost only one game-to Calhoun Academy. As region champs the Hornets traveled to Rock Hill for the Upper State Playoffs. After a 10-6 lead at halftime, they lost to the Catawba Indians in a hard-fought second half by a score of 19-10. The talented squads performed pompom routines at halftime during football and basketball seasons. They did enough stunts, pyramids and jumps to qualify for the Olympics! These girls worked hard all summer to bring excitement, spirit and enthusiasm to the school. Congratulations to two of the finest, most spirited squads in Thomas Hart's history! You've done a good job, girls and we appreciate it!_____________________________________________ JUNIOR V The Junior Varsity team, made up primarily of 7th and 8th graders, learned many of the fundamentals of football during the 77 season. A look at the record does not reveal everything about the team or the season, nor does it reveal the actual competitiveness of each individual player. Playing against teams that included many older boys and much larger squads, these 15 (and sometimes only 13) boys did learn team spirit, enthusiasm, fair play and how to take defeat. There were some exciting moments, however, that the score will never divulge. This team will never forget the day John Moyd cut loose and scored three touchdowns, or the game Rob Gardner intercepted a lateral and ran 75 yards for a t.d., or the day Kevin Brand caught the 30 yard pass for the first score of the season. A winning record? No . . . but a winning group of boys who gave their all for T.H.A. . . .? YES! These seniors add leadership and spark team spirit throughout every game. With three starters back from last year, two girls moving up from Junior Varsity, and four other talented players, the Hornets started their season with a bang. They expect to have a great season, topped off by the Regional Championship. This year's squad is willing to work to keep up the winning tradition of girls Varsity Basketball at Thomas Hart. BOV’S VARSITY BASKETBALL Few in number but loaded with talent and determination, the '78 Hornets turned on their power to break into a winning season. With a 4-0 region record at the halfway point of the season, a region championship was in the making. For the second time this year, excitement was in the air with a history-making, record-breaking team.
