the 1975 hornet volume 5 thomas e. hart academy hartsville, south Carolina 3 6 So then, it's up to you to get whatever you can out of this book. What part of THA are you? Only you can decide that. Only you can see the things which have most meaning to you. We can't tell you how to feel about your school. We can only present, as vividly and accurately as possible, what YOU have helped to make it. 10 ' fcVl  “ ‘Jr w r It doesn't really matter how you react to this yearbook. If you think it's funny, at least we've given you a bit of comedy ... If you think it's sad, we've given you a bit of drama . . .but, if you feel some of both, we've shown you a bit of life. 13 14 1974 - hornet’s first season FOOTBALL It is through the generosity of the late Mr. Hoyt Kelley that our school is located where it is today. Mr. Kelley donated the land that is our campus. Thomas Hart Academy was glad to have had the opportunity to honor Mr. Kelley before his death by naming our new athletic field, Kelley Field. Thomas Hart will always remember the kindness shown to us by this fine gentleman. 18 Hornet football is a new phrase around Hartsville, but it's catching on fast. The Hornets were 3-6-1 overall this year, not bad for a first year team, and showed great improvement by the end of the season. Coach Barfield acknowledges that the first year is a building year. We've got to learn the fundamentals before we can begin working together, playing good ball and winning consistently. The Hornets exhibited some fine talent and jumped right in and played inspired football at times against several powerful, well-established schools. We were In the last part of the season before I felt that we had reached the point where I like to begin working at the year's first practices, said Barfield. But, that's just the way it is with inexperienced guys in their school's first season of any sport. Next season, we'll be ready to begin immediately toward making the Hornets a real conference contender. The game knowledge and playing experience gained this year, together with the number of developing young players, and dedicated, loyal boosters provides THA with a bright outlook for the future. He attends to the innumberable problems that arise every day, while keeping a watchful eye on all expenditures, corrdinating the academic programs, and keeping abreast of new developments in the educational field. He is a multi-talented man who always puts THA first. The Board of Directors has the responsibility of making long range financial plans for our school. This year's classic had everything any sports fan could want: long bombs, trick plays, shoestring tackles (touches?), thrills, spills, and of course, cheerleaders. The Junior Panda's broke an old 11th grade losing tradition and crushed the hopes of the Senior Cobras, 24-14. Phyllis Mims and Vickie Brock combined for most of the Panda offense, exploding around end for long gains. Rhonda Fink, Faith Kelley and Cindy Marshall played great defense for the Pandas, anchoring the stone wall that prevented the Cobras from scoring until the fourth quarter. The Senior Cobras were led by Celeste Kelley, who scored both Cobra touchdowns, and Teresa Carter. Susan Elmore blocked two extra points and Carrie Coker had the most tackles for the losers. powder puff 0-000 00-0 d d 0-00 00-0 0m0 0.0 0.0 DOWN !; TO-GO bowl 55 Sponsored By Thomas Hart Academy BOOSTER CLUB Doesn't that phrase have a familiar ring? Throughout the school year the Booster Club is involved in work projects and fund-raisingpro- grams which benefit THA. This year's big project was, of course, foot- ball. To raise money for construction of the field and purchase of equip- ment and uniforms, the Booster club sponsored: Bingo parties, bake sales, a barbeque dinner, a horse show, the Miss Hornet contest and more. Interested, dedicated and hardworking are adjectives that de- scribe the Booster Club. This organization has helped make it possible for Thomas Hart to become a well-established respected school in five short years. Front Row, Left to Right: Bond Nickles, Ed Lawton, Keith Hulsey, David Morrison, Rick Griggs, Brent Burry. Back Row Chris Marshall, Jimmy McGee, Kim Easterling, Al Williams, Dane Outlaw. The Hornet varsity boys compiled an 8-9 overall record this season. They did well in conference play, but got swatted for five losses to tall, non-region foes. Coach Jim Griffin, in his first year of helping with Thomas Hart basketball, said, I knew we had some pretty good ballplayers, but not much experience. From the start we focused on building through the season toward a tournament showdown with Darlington. We had no height or quickness advantages, but we hustled and won a couple of games on pure hustle. The Hornets were beginning to get in tune, playing better defense and executing well offensively, when luck turned against them. With two weeks to go in the regular season, David Morrison was lost due to a broken arm. This was a tremendous blow to the Hornets' tournament hopes, but the THA team kept going to win the last two conference games and finish in second place. Unfortunately, the boys just couldn't quite put it all together in the tournament and were eliminated in the semifinals. The season had its gratifying moments (this year's 7-3 con- ference record was the best ever by a Hornet team), but it had its disappointments, too. Next year, with all but seniors Al Williams and Brent Burry returning, Coaches Griffin and Bar- field expect great things from the Hornets. Kneeling, Left to Right: Renee Sullivan, Cathy Robbins, Carrie Coker, Faith Kelley. Standing: Diane King, Donna Elmore, Lucy Reep, Cindy Marshall, Libby Bryant, Lynn Williams. 61 The Hornet varsity girls continued their winning tradition this year by wrapping up first place in the regular season and nosing out Byrdtown in the tournament finals to advance to the state playoffs. This year marks the fourth consecutive appearance for the Hornets in post-season competition. THA's girls breezed through regular season play losing only three games; two to non-conference powerhouse James F. Byrnes and one to Byrdtown. Everyone knows that the Hornets are loaded with talent, and they showed their championship qualities by overcoming a couple of slumps to stay on top. The girls had a lot of pressure on them during the year since the rest of the conference is always gunning for the 1 team. Coach Barfield is proud of their accomplishments and is looking forward to continued success. The Hornets lose two seniors this year: reserve guard Carol Allen, and floor leader Celeste Kelley. Celeste, especially, will be hard to replace, but with a crop of excellent rising Seniors and Juniors, and experienced younger players, Thomas Hart is still going to be tough. junior varsity basketball Coach Pete Cameron's Junior Varsity boys played a tough schedule this year. In almost every game their opponents held a definite ad- vantage in experience, height, and bench strength. The J.V.'s never gave up, however, and showed that they have talent which should provide THA with fine teams in the next few years. 64 Kneeling, Left to Right: Lynn Stokes, Jan Williams, Olivia Oliver, Lib King Standing: Sobie Soles, Ann Bryant, Pam Bateman, Chandler Reep, Jina Kelley, June Gandy The Junior Varsity girls basketball team played a light, but difficult schedule this year, and unfortunately didn't fare too well. This was the first year of basketball for most of the girls and their inexperience was a definite disadvan- tage. The season was not without its brighter moments however, with a win against Byrd- town. 65 believe it or not ... I know that you've all heard of SPEED-READERS. You know, the people who can just scan a page in a book, pick out the most important sentences, com- mit them to memory, and finish a good-sized book in a remarkably short time. Now, some of these speed-readers are SO FAST, that they can scan a page in 5 seconds! Just imagine, for example, (this is purely hypothetical), that a speed-reader was reading this book. If he was pretty good at speed-reading he could read this page, and the next page, and the next page, and the page after that in less than 30 seconds! He could read those pages, that is, if there was something on them to read. It just so happens that the next three pages contain only pictures. Speed-read- ers, unfortunately, are not taught how to scan pictures, pick out the important faces, commit them to memory, and finish the average family album in a matter of minutes. So you see, speed-readers are NOT perfect! It takes them just as long to look at a picture book as it takes ANY idiot, who gets his hands on one. Now, what I suggest to remedy this unfortunate oversight in the speed-reading course is a supplement to the program . . . namely, a SPEED-LOOKING course! I'm confident that a speed-looking course could enable anyone to look at any group of pictures (black and white or color) in 3 the time it now takes him! Fantastic! 66 67 here’s looking at you, kid 69 HOMECOMING 75 TERESA GRIGGS Ann Gardner Homecoming Queen Carol Allen 2nd Runner-Up 1974-1975 1st Runner-Up Senior Contestants: Carol Allen, Valerie Chafin, Susan Elmore, Ann Gardner, Teresa Griggs, Debbie Wallace. The words written on this page are called copy. The page design is, technically speaking, a layout. There are 95 more pages in this particular annual. Each page contains a couple of pretty pictures, at least a sentence or two of sparkling copy, and, usually, a tiny number in the lower outside corner. After thumbing through 71 previous pages of this annual, probably looking to see if YOU are in any of the pretty pictures, you might have noticed a rather unique pattern to our book. For the benefit of those of you who may not be all that perceptive, we'll spell it out-this annual is laid out in what we in the business call double-page spreads. A double-page spread is, except in very rare cases, made up of facing pages which are related in subject matter, express a complete and cogent thought, and progress from left to right in an orderly fashion. Now, having led you through this rather involved discourse I find that I must make an em- barrassing confession ... THIS is one of those very rare cases I mentioned. This double-page spread isn't made up of facing pages related in subject matter, expressing a cogent concept, or even progressing orderly from left to right! We just had to fill this page with something besides that little number in the corner. Oh well. Thanks for reading. 72 patrons Mr. and Mrs. Posey D. Kelley Mrs. W.H. We have an obligation to everyone connected with the school to do at least our best. We believe we did. Of course no one is perfect and subsequently, no work of art or piece of literature is either. All we could do was try to capture a little of what Thomas Hart is to us. Hopefully, you will be able to see some of what it means to you in this book, too. If you consider yearbooks as a whole for a moment, you will realize that they serve no useful purpose, really. But we hope you won't be so critical as to pass this yearbook off as an utterly useless bit of memorabilia. As you grow older and leave THA far behind, don't leave the memories back there, too. Drag this annual down from the top shelf of your closet every ten years or so on a rainy afternoon and have a good laugh ... or give a quiet sigh . . . depending on your point of view.
