Hart Academy Hartsville, South Carolina 16 Spring Fever 19 Administration Mr. Joseph B. Allen is a determined and forthright lea- der, who is well-suited to his many duties. Always striving for academic excellence and a workable code of discipline, he manages to combine the jobs of educator, administra- tor, architect, teacher, and counselor into his primary oc- cupation as our Headmaster. Students must ad- just to waking up early, spending the last days of summer cooped-up inside, and not going anywhere on week-day nights. The pleasure of seeing old friends and making new ones usually offsets the drudgery of meeting class- es and homework assign- ments. Projects like the magazine sale and activi- ties such as soccer games, car-washes, and do-nut sales, add a little fun to the everyday school rou- tine. Soccer Soccer Team and Cheerleaders: Cheerleaders L TO R Kathy Stukes, Debra Brock, Beth Marshall, Don Russell, Charles Coker, Terry Grainger, Jan Johnson, Mike Stewart, Dane Outlaw, Mike Chafin, Easterling, Captains (KNEELING) Karl Jennings and Tim Griggs. Head Cheerleader Laura Norwood, Kathy Oates, Julie Sligh, Lynn Stewart. Soccer Team: L TO R Johnny Shepard, Eddie Easterling, Wade Keisler, Ricky Stokes, Eldon Henderson, Brent Burry, Kim The T.H.A. Officer Crawford decides he’d better haul us in. “We thought he was our friend” Student Council L-R: Don Russell, May Baird, Press Coker, Susan Brown, Anne Brown, Brent Burry, Beth Marshall Absent: Mac Chapman Student Body Officers enjoy a friendly game of cards with their advisor, Mrs. Paula Davis. Officers L-R: Beth Marshall, Vice-Pres., Mac Chapman, Treas., Mrs. Davis, Brent Burry, Sec. Press Coker, Student Body President. Student Council Members Mac Chapman and Susan Brown keep score during a basketball game. The purpose of the Student Council is to serve as the voice of the students and work in their behalf. Ideally, the Student Council is allowed to participate in the making of rules and regulations for students. Although this is not always the case, the council has begun several projects this year which, hope- fully, will be continued in the future. The Student Council has also sponsored several student activities including Tacky Day, Teacher Appreciation Week, and Home- coming. Ruff-Tuffs Ruff-Up Junior Jaguars The Senior Class once again rolled to an easy victory over the Juniors. Although the Jaguars took the open- ing kickoff the length of the field for a touchdown, the Seniors were not discouraged. Using their strong running game, the Ruff-Tuffs came back to score and take the lead. The Seniors stopped all Junior attempts to score and finally put the game out of reach with a touchdown pass in the closing minutes of the game. 34 The newly chartered Beta Club has gotten off to a good start, with aid from Mrs. Brown and the cooperation of the faculty and stu- dents. The Christmas program and collec- tion of food for needy families were suc- cesses, and bigger plans for the future are being made. President. FROM L to R: Anne Brown, runner-up Beth Cooley, queen Laura Norwood, Kathy Morris, Judy Rhodes Laura Norwood Beth Cooley The boys were relatively successful this sea- son, although not looking as promising as they did last year. They did however, work together as a team and pulled out many games. Led by captains Tim Griggs and Karl Jen- nings, both seniors, they fought hard to win. Other outstanding contributors were Jan John- son, a junior, Eldon Henderson, who put most of the points on the board, and Don Russell, another high scorer and only a sophomore. All in all, it was a good year for the boys. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT BASKETBALL? Brent Burry — “Basketball? I’ve done that before.” Eddie Easterling — “It’s round and orange, reminds me of Clemson!” Tim Griggs — “I love to play the game!” Karl Jennings — “It’s a challenge.” Eldon Henderson — “I hope I’m better at basketball than I am at typing. At least in this sport it pays off to by aggressive.” Jan Johnson — “It’s the best thing that ever happened to me.” Sid Jordan — “Well, it looks pretty good from the bench.” Don Russell — “This year has been frustrating and there was nothing I could do about it. But then again, it might have been my best year.” A1 Williams — “Very interesting.” 49 Karl Jennings has a chance for a bonus free throw. Eldon Henderson shoots high over defender. Our Cheerleaders (?) It’s an easy lay up for two points. Under the guidance of Coach Davis the girls’ basketball team enjoyed a good year. The fine starters, backed up by a good bench, kept their composure in many tough games and pulled out wins. BASKETBALL Cathy Robbins — “I do it to impress the guys.” Celeste Kelley — “It’s been a rewarding sport for me.” Beth Cooley— “It makes me sexy.” Donna Elmore — “It’s a great feeling!” Diane King — “Coach Davis led the way.” Libby Bryant — “I have more fun chasing that round ball than chasing boys” Kathy Morris — “It’s been fun working together with my teammates.” Judy Rhodes— “All the girls have been terrific.” Harriet Wilmeth — “It leaves me speechless.” 53 54 55 Seniors Anne Brown Robbie Brown Betsy Chapman Press Coker Beth Cooley Mitzie Fink Tim Griggs Karl Jennings 58 Butch Morrell Kathy Morris Laura Norwood Judy Rhodes Gene Sligh Rick Tickell Robert Wallace Pres. Berry D. Lane is a man who never seems to stop. Teaching, coaching and or- ganizing the Junior fund raising projects are a few of his everyday duties; but somehow he manages to find time to coach a powderpuff team, serve on the discipli- nary board, take pictures for the annual, act as a sponsor for the Beta Club Conven- tion, drive the athletic bus and keep the gym in top shape. More importantly, he cares about his students and is always glad to work in our behalf. Compliments of Coker’s PEDIGREED SEED CO.
