Text from Pages 1 - 60 of the 1971 volume:

THE 1971 THOMAS E. HART ACADEMY Hartsville S.C. THOMAS HART . . . a school dedicated to the education of youth . . . a school where a friendly atmosphere prevails . . . where everyone knows everyone else . . . a school where work comes first . . . but where we can always find something to laugh at . . . DEDICATION For the concern you have shown for each student and for the reputation of our school; for giving us a respect for knowledge; for teaching us to reason by thinking for ourselves; for your dedication, generosity, and hard work in making this, our Senior year, one of our best years; for all you’ve done; we, the members of the Class of 1971, dedicate the 1971 Hornet to you — 4 ADMINISTRATION We students at Thomas Hart Academy have many individuals and groups to thank for their support of our school. Mr. Allen, our headmaster and an experi- enced private school administrator, has been a capa- ble, dedicated and strong leader. Mrs. W. C. Bate- man, our school secretary, has handled her many responsibilities with ease amid the countless inter- ruptions, always smiling and offering assistance in solving the many problems which arise. The entire student body will be eternally grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Kelly who donated the land on which the original academic building and campus were established. Without their most generous ges- ture, Thomas Hart Academy might never have been a reality. The Board of Directors consists of President Allan Brock, Vice President Robert Pitts, Secretary Anne H. Gettys, Treasurer Ernest Sullivan, Headmaster Joseph Allen, Dr. Ollie Stukes, W. Arnold Bryant, Betty June C. Gandy, and John H. Martin. This group has been generous with both their time and talents. The Parent-Teacher Organization of our school, headed bv Cliff Robbins, has undertaken many pro- jects which provided the means for many of the extra-curricular activities at Thomas Hart this year. The Booster Club, under President Frank Stokes, Jr., has worked ceaselessly in support of our athletic teams. The major project of this group was the pur- chase of a bus for use in transporting the teams. A special thanks is due Mrs. Lou Gardner, Senior Class sponsor, without whose invaluable guidance this annual would not have been possible. And finally, our thanks go to all parents and friends who have worked for and supported Thomas Hart Academy this past year. Joseph B. Allen, Headmaster Mrs. Doris Bateman, Secretary FACULTY 1. Other members include those who have made the Honor Roll or the Headmaster’s List. One project of this group was the sponsoring of Monday as Patriotism Day. Each Monday morning Student Council members presented a special program on the American Flag and the National Anthem. The purpose of Patriotism Day is to give the students a greater understanding of their American heritage. Annual Staff The staff of the 1971 Hornet worked many long and hard hours, during and after school. The four seniors headed the staff composed of several underclassmen, who also spent many hours selling ads to finance the annual. Although it was rough going at times, it was a lot of fun, and we’re proud of our efforts. Seated: J. Powell, R. Elmore, L. Prierson, B. Oates, J. Griggs, A. Brown, Standing: Mrs. Gardner, S.
