The addition of Contemporary Global Perspectives, a course dealing with current world problems, and a course entitled Minority Groups in America should enhance the program greatly. Major objectives of the Social Studies department include helping the student understand past and current world situations and problems, giving him the basic social skills needed in later life and helping him to recognize cultures different from his own. Mr. Smith, Social Studies department head, had the good fortune to view a different culture first-hand when he and several department leaders from other Chesterfield County schools visited Tangier Island.
