Dun- Hoot When Coach Ed Karpus returned last August for his fifth year at Thomas Dale, he found forty-one boys from whom to mold a football squad. He had only three regulars left over from the preceding year...quarterback, David Newton, half- back, Carson Bosher, and end, Herbert Boyd. Coach Karpus was not disturbed by the scarcity of regular players, but began molding his squad into hard hitting gridders. After weeks of grueling practice the inexperienced Knights were ready for combat. The opening game of the season was with Hopewell, the school which the Knights long have wanted on their schedule. The Knights rolled over the Blue Devils by a score of 13-0. This was the first shut out game handed to Hopewell since 1945. In the following weeks the Knights downed Norfolk Catholic, Benedic- tine, and a strong Stafford eleven. é : e.g he | de xe ot ace ; ee mee He % ges é : a ry ik 7 a ‘ o ” : ; 3 eo : ny mrt i row oe Ea 1} a, We’re on our way! = ea Knight on the march! + 33s € ee oe i navant, C. After this the Knights downed John Marshall, a strong Group I opponent. The Knights next played Highland Springs and this game was a_heart-breaker because the Knights were beaten 12-0. A pounding rain hindered the Knights throughout the game and they were unable to make their offense click. The Springers using their heavier backfield plowed through the mud and the Knights’ defense for two touchdowns. The Knights’ successful season was concluded with their traditional Thanksgiving Day Game with their arch-rival Manchester. BDaskethall The success of this year’s basketball team was a surprise to everyone. At the beginning of the season, little evidence of a winning team was mani- fested. As usual, lack of height was the chief draw- back. Disregarding this, Coach Ed Karpus molded a team that was able to outhustle its tall opponents. The Thomas Dale Knights’ first string this year was made up of returning veterans Carson Bosher, Joe Dockery, David Newton, Billy Nix and_ the fifth position was alternately taken by Bobby Dean, Marshall Vaughan and Eddie Lohr. Its main activity was to produce a play “Magnolia Blooms” to be entered in District C competition. Under the able directorship of Mr. Johnson this play received a distinguished rating which qualified it to enter the state festival at the University of Virginia where it took a Superior rating. As we grow older and face more respon- sibilities we realize that all of us need God’s help to do our best. Our daily devotions helped to teach us the impor- tance of getting along together and setting good examples for the underclassmen. Though we often failed, those inspira- tional devotions helped us to start each new day with a purpose. 82 Cppical We were skeptical when we first heard that schooldays are supposed to be among the happiest of our lives. Now that we are Seniors and about to leave Thomas Dale forever, we are beginning to see the truth in this statement. From the time we hurry up the walk in the morn- ing until we retrace our steps more slowly in the afternoon we meet situations that will one day be fond memories. Our government class taught us the i mportance of good citizenship. As we learned the history of our government, how it functions now, and our place in its future, America suddenly became our responsibility. We realized that we were no longer children but the determining factors of the success or the failure of democracy in the future. Probably for the first time we maturely discussed world problems and what we could do to solve them. Our government class will never be forgotten’ for we will put into daily use what we learned there. After a series of morning classes the lunch bell rang at last. Then the mad rush to the cafeteria began. Many sen- iors, in order to avoid the rush, con- gregated in Mrs. Reames’ room to eat lunch amid laughter and jostling. This recess from classes will always be a happy recollection! The 3 o'clock bell rang and we rushed to our lockers to gather up books and coats. Our classes for the day were over. Every member of the senior class played a significant part in making Thomas Dale what it is through the individual influence of each member upon others. 83 We will never forget Literature class. Though we fussed and fumed because we had to learn poetry and exercise our brain a little we realized that we were learning something that will stick with us. We discovered that Literature is not merely pretty poetry and interesting stor- ies, it is a revelation of life and enriches our outlook while giving to us by great men. Now as we come close to the end of the school year we recall with nostalgia the verse, “But the tender grace of a day that is dead will never come back to me.” “All the learned and authentic fellows.” Honor Roll Seniors Eric Peters Carolyn Wilmoth Willie Jo Poole Dana Conn Jewel Seay Mary Adams Margaret West juniors David Broughton Marian Adams Jane Howerton Joy Wilmoth Brenda Martin Patricia Barbour Vicki Lynn David Bosserman Judy Pride Carroll Brooks Betty Taylor Judy Coghill Glenda Adams Mary Byrd Micou Sophomores George Montgomery Kay Horowitz Carol Otto Shelia Sigman Nancy Perdue Nancy Eure Marlene Quate Laura Faggart Carolyn Shepard Beth Goodwyn Janie Sinclair Aleta Goodwyn Lawrence Blake Nora Harvey Dewayne Cole Sheila Holt Cathy Atkins Faye McCall Barbara Edwards Elaine Sprouse Cecilia ‘Turnage Eugenia Whitlow Sandra Woodfin Freshmen Donald Coley Rose Marie Yager James Hopkins Charles Salesberry Barbara Coulter Jane Riley Faye McCauley Cele Perdue Anne Booten Jan Peters William Blaylock Ann Marie Elder Woody Fitzgerald Phyllis Shields Billy Haden Cynthia Sturdivant Betty Jean Hudson Susan Teller Sylvia Cranford Mildred Turner Betty Wilmoth Peggy Ingram ighth Graders Douglas Perdue Allen Paulett Mickie Rabineau John Broughton Julie Roman Lester Bryant Patsy Seay Betsy Coats Clarence Elliot Brenda Cole Brenda Gunn Marjory Dabney Bonnie Ray Nan Davis Chick Beville George Werner George Hazelton Barbara Peele 84 Senior Data MARY ADELINE ADAMS Warwick High School—Chorus 1; Debating Club 1; Bagley Junior High—Chorus 2; Orchestra 2; Thomas Dale—Quill and Scroll 4,5:.
