Returning to school at the end of the summer vaca- tion, Coach John Pellack found an unusually large squad of fifty-five boys anticipating the rough and tumble tac- tics of football . After weeks of hard practice, the start- ing line-up began to shape itself. Congratulations go to Bruce Nunnally for being the only freshman who made first string. The sophomore class contributed to the team such stalwarts as Bill Goodwyn, Richard Grantham, Carl- ton Walker, John Kasten, and Willie Craver. Another sophomore, Warren Shelton, filled the fullback slot. The first team included two iuniors, Macey Vaughan and Kurt Gloeckner, while the seniors rounded outthe team with Franklin Abernathy and Jack Lipscomb as halfbacks, Warren Congdon at quarterback, Adam Trapp as guard, Grady Nixon at center, and Jack Tait as extra point kicker. Coach Pellack, with co-captains Franklin Aber- nathy and Tommy Boyd, began to mold his team for 1951. ln the opening game at Farmville the Knights found themselves somewhat iitteryunderthe lights and allowed the openingkick-off to be returned for a touchdown, but after the first quarter, they began to get their footing and 52 Q9 Q IG egg 3? . g., HT 3 4.3- X g f-17 1 LSL s ' :'e'a 1, J 1 .',o 4,,,,,- 51- .., .. 1. , vo . Highland Springs, however, proved too strong, rolling up a 39-l4 score overthe Knights. This loss put fire into the hearts of the Thomas Dale eleven, for in following weeks they be- gan an offensive which crumbled Ashlane 39-O, Ken- bridge 38-O, and the hard fighting team from Poquosan l9-O. After adding Falmouth to the list of victories, our boys began preparing for the big homecoming game on Thanksgiving Day, with our arch rival Manchester. This game was a play-off for the suburban league title. The huge crowd indicated the great interest in the outcome of this all important game. Fumbles marked the game, however, and the Lancers pulled in front l2-O. Franklin Abernathy and Warren Shelton won bcckfield positions on the mythical All-Suburban Team. Several others on our team gained honorable mention. Thus ended Coach Pellack's most successful season of his four years at Thomas Dale, with five wins, two de- feats, and one tie. 53 ll n ',-I Q-P, I' . The boys were met by their new coach, Ed Karpus, who had taken over the coaching helm after the resignation of Coach Pellack. Coach Karpus came to us from the College of William and Mary where he was doing graduate work. Coach Karpus at once began to whip his team into shape. Although the term underdog had been tacked tothe Knights, Coach Karpus, with his hard running drills and long after- noon practices, soon had the boys doing some fast moving on the basketball court. The veterans around whom the coach built his T951-52 team were guards, Jack Tait and Jack Lipscomb, forward, Macey Vaughan, and center, John Kasten. Newcomers to the start- ing line-up were Bill Goodwyn and Billy Tripp. Tripp ended the season as high scorer for the Knights. Other additions to the squad were Morris Hynst, Herman Hess, Buzzy Haymans, Jack Daughtrey, Frank Trapp, William Ellis and Charlie Higgins. Our first game sawthe Alumni take the court against the Knights, with some fine players from former T. D. squads. The Knights, however, with the aid of the fast break taught them by Coach Karpus, won an easy victory over the Alumni. In the second and third games, the Knights were not as fortunate, for no matter how hard they ran, nor how high they iumped, they were not able to overcome the power of Manchester and Cathedral. The next two games found the Knights back on their home court, hitting the nets nicely to overcome the Varina Blue Devils and the James Monroe Jackets. Then Lady Luck seemed to desert our boys for they lost three games in succession by one point each to Spotsylvania, Highland Springs, and Midlothian. In the following five games the Thomas Dale cagers lost to Varina and, for the second time, to Cathedral, Manchester, Highland Springs, and Spotsylvania. Spurred on by the desire to win a berth in the District II, Group ll Tournament, the Knights againrallied and crumbled both James Monroe and Henry Cl-ay, the latter in two successive games, to end the seasonina tie with the Varina Blue Devils for third place in the Suburban League. tj 5 gag Q'-g W I 1 fn, 'x n Q Q E., S., 'gif X -', . 9 ' Q if - ik' s 1 N-'M 4' :iv '94, .
