' Annie ' a hit in spring Annie Get Your Gun, always an audi- ence favorite, was the choice of di- rector Tom Lewis for the annual Spring Musical of 1967. The musical, performed March 19, 20, and 21, featured many well- known songs such as Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better, Doin ' What Comes Natur ' lly, and the ever popular There ' s No Business Like Show Business. The western show centered on a love story between the famous sharpshooter Annie Oakley, played by junior Kathy Mi- ley, and her marksman rival suitor Frank Butler, played by junior Jerome Davis. The cast included many other real-life legends other than Annie Oakley, such as Buffalo Bill (Jon Mertz) and Sitting Bull (Bruce Pickens). The story featured the traveling west- ern show of Annie and Frank, joined by their barker Charlie Davenport and Frank ' s assistant Dolly Tate, portrayed by juniors Guy Booher and Christy Wright respectively. Despite his love for Annie, Frank be- came jealous of Annie ' s top billing and split the show, taking Dolly with him. This conflict kept the audience in suspense waiting for love to bring Annie and Frank back together. The remaining cast and chorus, with the help of choreographer Ed Schwab, helped to uphold Howe ' s strong tradition of quality performances, well-known throughout the city. Chorus participation was one of the reasons why Mr. Lewis chose Annie Get Your Gun. He felt that it was the kind of show to motivate and excite the supporting cast. Other rea- sons included the fact that three or four junior girls had a good shot at the lead and had strong potential. As usual the annual music production was extremely well performed and believ- able due to Lewis ' excellent casting and motivating abilities.
