Good year for band, orchestra The 1986-87 school year was an ex- traordinary one for the orchestra and marching band. For the orchestra, this was the first year to have string special- ists, with Mrs. Leslie Bartolowitz for the first semester and Ms. Sheila Harris for part of the second semester. For the marching band, it was one of the best years they have had in a long time be- cause, according to director David Pon- car, It was the first year that juniors and seniors have realized their leadership po- tential. The marching band won six trophies at Bush Stadium. Soloists Dana Huggler, Rob Harris, Jerome Davis, and David Grider received the Outstanding Wind So- loists award. Rob Lewis, Andrea Fish- burn, Eric Alexander, Scott Schoen, Shawntez Gant, Steve Deeter, and Keith Gough won the award for Best Percussion Section. Orchestra members Monica Mertz, playing violin, and Jeremy Kincaid, playing string bass, both won first place awards in regional and state contests. According to Ms. Harris, The orchestra has given their full potential as a whole. She says, however, that Howe needs a bigger orchestra. All in all, 1986-87 was an excellent year for both orchestra and marching band. ' Charlie Brown ' a summer hit This summer director Tom Lewis de- cided on a rare, repeat performance of You ' re A Good Man, Charlie Brown. Last done seven years ago the musical comedy, based on Charles M. Schultz ' s popular comic strip, was double cast. The show features only seven characters, and, because of the large turnout, there were two casts, each playing two con- secutive nights. In order to avoid showing favoritism, Mr. Lewis divided the casts into This cast and T hat cast, having each person with a part draw his cast assignment from a hat. Another of Lewis ' ingenious ideas was deciding to put both the actors and the audience on the auditorium stage togeth- er. Using a theater in the round style, the set was built on the stage in an H shape, with the audience seated inside the sides of the H, creating a feeling of involvement rather than mere observa- tion. Brian Boyd, as that Charlie Brown, made his character seem even more be- lievable by shaving his head for the role, and Jill Frederickson was still able to per- form her part as this Lucy, after having a case of pneumonia just prior to the per- formances. The show also featured new- comers in that cast, including Chris An- derson as Schroeder; Jamaine Walker as Snoopy; Heather Harter as Peppermint Patty; and Tom Burgess as Linus. Evelyn Winslow and Carolyn Jacobs, playing Lucy and Sally respectively, rounded out that cast, while this cast consisted of Guy Booher (Charlie Brown), Jerome Davis (Linus), Pedro Scott (Snoopy), Christy Wright (Peppermint Patty), Ron Yeary (Schroeder), and Dawn Wratten (Sally). Lynne Morgan, the department accompanist, volunteered her piano- playing services for the production. The entertaining, innovative show was highly successful and well attended all four performances, July 22, 23, 24, and 25. (JILL FREDERICKSON) 16 Summer Musical
