Good year for band, orchestra The 1986-87 school year was an ex- traordinary one for the orchestra and marching band. For the orchestra, this was the first year to have string special- ists, with Mrs. Leslie Bartolowitz for the first semester and Ms. Sheila Harris for part of the second semester. For the marching band, it was one of the best years they have had in a long time be- cause, according to director David Pon- car, It was the first year that juniors and seniors have realized their leadership po- tential. The marching band won six trophies at Bush Stadium. Soloists Dana Huggler, Rob Harris, Jerome Davis, and David Grider received the Outstanding Wind So- loists award. Rob Lewis, Andrea Fish- burn, Eric Alexander, Scott Schoen, Shawntez Gant, Steve Deeter, and Keith Gough won the award for Best Percussion Section. Orchestra members Monica Mertz, playing violin, and Jeremy Kincaid, playing string bass, both won first place awards in regional and state contests. According to Ms. Harris, The orchestra has given their full potential as a whole. She says, however, that Howe needs a bigger orchestra. All in all, 1986-87 was an excellent year for both orchestra and marching band.
