Tisdale team fights drugs The rising abuse of drugs in elemen- tary school, high school, college, and the working world concerned Indiana Pacer Wayman Tisdale and teacher coach Jim Arvin. Together, Tisdale and Arvin decided to start a program that would help young children say no to the demanding pressure of drugs. This program consisted of 14 high school students,, picked because of out- standing academic or sports records with no trace of drug use. These students were willing to attend the Indiana Teen Institute to be taught better leadership and communication skills. A problem which hit the group was the $150 per per- son required to attend the anti-drug camp. The money barrier was broken by Don Gading of Brightwood Moving and Transportation, who donated the $2,100 needed. During the school year the Tisdale Team visited two elementary schools and two junior high schools and spoke to the students about self-image and goal- set- ting. They emphasized to the younger stu- dents that It is okay to say ' no ' to drugs because we do. My kids are effective because young ones look up to them and use them as role models, Arvin stated. Peer pressure is very effective. I get excited and am willing to help, was the feeling of senior Derek Haw- thorne, an active team member. Brian Mc- Donald commented that he enjoys being around young kids and feels good about himself, knowing that he is helping the future leaders to make the right deci- sions. This was the greatest feeling of all to the Tisdale Team. (VICKIE DEAL) Top: Wayman Tisdale of the Indiana Pacers gives his autograph to an excited fan and committed part of his team, Kathy Miley.
