We ' ve got a new look It ' s always hard to break traditions and undergo change. However, things hap- pen, people change, and looks go out of style and new ones replace the old. Changes are part of high school. We ' ve got a new look this year. Not only do we have a large freshman class, but the closing of Attucks and Marshall also brought us many new upperclass- men. We also have many new teachers. New students and teachers have brought fresh ideas and added spice to dying ac- tivities. There have been some conflicts but none have been serious. We also have a new schedule with school starting at 7:30 and ending at 2:30 rather than 8:10 and 3:10. 2 Theme Upper left: Many students at Howe take advantage of the weight room. Together, Tisdale and Arvin decided to start a program that would help young children say no to the demanding pressure of drugs. This program consisted of 14 high school students,, picked because of out- standing academic or sports records with no trace of drug use. These students were willing to attend the Indiana Teen Institute to be taught better leadership and communication skills. A problem which hit the group was the $150 per per- son required to attend the anti-drug camp. The money barrier was broken by Don Gading of Brightwood Moving and Transportation, who donated the $2,100 needed. During the school year the Tisdale Team visited two elementary schools and two junior high schools and spoke to the students about self-image and goal- set- ting. They emphasized to the younger stu- dents that It is okay to say ' no ' to drugs because we do. My kids are effective because young ones look up to them and use them as role models, Arvin stated. Peer pressure is very effective. I get excited and am willing to help, was the feeling of senior Derek Haw- thorne, an active team member. Brian Mc- Donald commented that he enjoys being around young kids and feels good about himself, knowing that he is helping the future leaders to make the right deci- sions. This was the greatest feeling of all to the Tisdale Team. (VICKIE DEAL) Top: Wayman Tisdale of the Indiana Pacers gives his autograph to an excited fan and committed part of his team, Kathy Miley. Tisdale Team 1 1 Juniors lead music groups Although the Concert Choir lost many strong singers to graduation, it still performed extremely well with a large amount of talent from the junior class. In addition to the annual Pops and Christ- mas Concerts the singers caroled down- town at the city library, the City Market, the Education Center, and the Hyatt, but this year with a different look. Instead of the traditional choir robes, which Howe ' s choir has always worn, this year director Tom Lewis decided that tuxedos and dresses fit the bill. Unfortunately, the bill was a major problem. Poor audience turnout at recent spring musicals had made it financially difficult for the music department to pur- chase new outfits in the past, but out- standing student participation in fund raisers made it possible this year. The Varsity Singers, wearing the same outfits as the choir, had another eventful year, directed by Mr. Bob Bramblett and choreographed by Mr. Ed Schwab. They were invited to sing at various places throughout the year including the Gift and Hobby Show at the Fairgrounds, Union Station, and the East Side Health Care Center. The trendy singing and dancing group performed innovating April 29 in a dinner-theater style at Howe. The event seated 125-150 people who were served dinner while the show choir treated them to an hour show on the stage with lights, props, and drops. Mr. Bramblett hopes the new event will be repeated in coming years, perhaps becoming as popular as the Pops and Christmas Concerts. This year the Madrigals, also directed by Mr. Bramblett, expanded their pro- gram. Besides having two feasts on the Howe stage, they visited two local churches. With Pedro Scott as King and Elyce Meyer as Queen, the medieval singers entertained at the Speedway Methodist Church and the Eastminster United Presbyterian Church. Unfortunate- ly, appearances at Union Station and the Indianapolis Zoo had to be cancelled be- cause of a flu epidemic just before Christ- mas vacation. The group of 20 featured not only solos by Kathy Miley, Pedro Scott, and Angie Bailey, but also flea tricks by the Court Jester, Guy Booher. All in all the music department man- aged to maintain the tradition of excel- lence for yet another year. Vocal Music 13 Good year for band, orchestra The 1986-87 school year was an ex- traordinary one for the orchestra and marching band. For the orchestra, this was the first year to have string special- ists, with Mrs. Leslie Bartolowitz for the first semester and Ms. Sheila Harris for part of the second semester. For the marching band, it was one of the best years they have had in a long time be- cause, according to director David Pon- car, It was the first year that juniors and seniors have realized their leadership po- tential. The marching band won six trophies at Bush Stadium. Soloists Dana Huggler, Rob Harris, Jerome Davis, and David Grider received the Outstanding Wind So- loists award. Rob Lewis, Andrea Fish- burn, Eric Alexander, Scott Schoen, Shawntez Gant, Steve Deeter, and Keith Gough won the award for Best Percussion Section. Orchestra members Monica Mertz, playing violin, and Jeremy Kincaid, playing string bass, both won first place awards in regional and state contests. According to Ms. Harris, The orchestra has given their full potential as a whole. She says, however, that Howe needs a bigger orchestra. All in all, 1986-87 was an excellent year for both orchestra and marching band. Music 15 ' Charlie Brown ' a summer hit This summer director Tom Lewis de- cided on a rare, repeat performance of You ' re A Good Man, Charlie Brown. Last done seven years ago the musical comedy, based on Charles M. Schultz ' s popular comic strip, was double cast. The show features only seven characters, and, because of the large turnout, there were two casts, each playing two con- secutive nights. In order to avoid showing favoritism, Mr. Lewis divided the casts into This cast and T hat cast, having each person with a part draw his cast assignment from a hat. Another of Lewis ' ingenious ideas was deciding to put both the actors and the audience on the auditorium stage togeth- er. Using a theater in the round style, the set was built on the stage in an H shape, with the audience seated inside the sides of the H, creating a feeling of involvement rather than mere observa- tion. Brian Boyd, as that Charlie Brown, made his character seem even more be- lievable by shaving his head for the role, and Jill Frederickson was still able to per- form her part as this Lucy, after having a case of pneumonia just prior to the per- formances. The show also featured new- comers in that cast, including Chris An- derson as Schroeder; Jamaine Walker as Snoopy; Heather Harter as Peppermint Patty; and Tom Burgess as Linus. Evelyn Winslow and Carolyn Jacobs, playing Lucy and Sally respectively, rounded out that cast, while this cast consisted of Guy Booher (Charlie Brown), Jerome Davis (Linus), Pedro Scott (Snoopy), Christy Wright (Peppermint Patty), Ron Yeary (Schroeder), and Dawn Wratten (Sally). Lynne Morgan, the department accompanist, volunteered her piano- playing services for the production. The entertaining, innovative show was highly successful and well attended all four performances, July 22, 23, 24, and 25. Summer Musical 17 ' Annie ' a hit in spring Annie Get Your Gun, always an audi- ence favorite, was the choice of di- rector Tom Lewis for the annual Spring Musical of 1967. The musical, performed March 19, 20, and 21, featured many well- known songs such as Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better, Doin ' What Comes Natur ' lly, and the ever popular There ' s No Business Like Show Business. The western show centered on a love story between the famous sharpshooter Annie Oakley, played by junior Kathy Mi- ley, and her marksman rival suitor Frank Butler, played by junior Jerome Davis. The cast included many other real-life legends other than Annie Oakley, such as Buffalo Bill (Jon Mertz) and Sitting Bull (Bruce Pickens). The story featured the traveling west- ern show of Annie and Frank, joined by their barker Charlie Davenport and Frank ' s assistant Dolly Tate, portrayed by juniors Guy Booher and Christy Wright respectively. Despite his love for Annie, Frank be- came jealous of Annie ' s top billing and split the show, taking Dolly with him. This conflict kept the audience in suspense waiting for love to bring Annie and Frank back together. The remaining cast and chorus, with the help of choreographer Ed Schwab, helped to uphold Howe ' s strong tradition of quality performances, well-known throughout the city. Chorus participation was one of the reasons why Mr. Lewis chose Annie Get Your Gun. He felt that it was the kind of show to motivate and excite the supporting cast. Other rea- sons included the fact that three or four junior girls had a good shot at the lead and had strong potential. As usual the annual music production was extremely well performed and believ- able due to Lewis ' excellent casting and motivating abilities. Groups 29 JROTC teaches leaders Most people think that ROTC mainly teaches army material. That is not the case. Of course, it does teach a lot of fundamentals, such as left face or right face, but the course never teach- es things like hand-to-hand combat. Suppose someone were to walk up to Master Sergeant Corbin Davis and ask him what the purpose of JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) is. His reply would be to make better citizens of high school students and teach them leadership skills. When asked what the term leader- ship meant to them, Billy Jenson said, It rewards self-confidence. But Joe Whitney had a different point of view. He said leadership means being able to take charge of a group of people without being told, rewarding those who do good and punishing those who don ' t, and finally it means . . . admit your mistakes. Under the strong leadership of Battal- ion Commander Bruce Wright and Battal- ion Executive Officer Debra Fisher, the battalion placed again in the Veteran ' s Day parade. Under the direction of drill team commanders Bruce Wright, Joe Whitney, and Debra Fisher the male and female drill teams became more skillful and confident in themselves. JROTC 33 Tower back on track Many problems faced the Tower staff this year, causing them to fall into a temporary slump. The staff, for the most part, had a pro- ductive first issue. But problems within the staff, such as shortness of time and other activities outside of school, caused many of the staff to abandon completely. But the Tower lives on with a bright new fire to guide it back on track. Many new members joined the staff. But with new members came more problems, such as lack of numbers and experience. Most of the staff were underclassmen, howev- er, and they were determined to stick and make the paper what it once was. The staff is rebuilding a quality publica- tion, commented second semester news editor Steve Swinford. The paper itself changed also. The for- mat changed from a newsmagazine to a tabloid format. The number of pages changed from sixteen to four, making pro- duction easier. According to adviser Dave Massy, the new staff was working under severe con- ditions because of their inexperience. It ' s kind of like being a basketball coach with a good team, with a fast break and rebound power, and then losing the whole team and getting a totally new team. They ' re going to be slow at first but will improve as time goes on, he said. The caring was there, and they operat- ed as a team, and they got the job done. Tower 35 Many changes, new faces The 1986-87 school year was one of many changes and new faces. With John Marshall and Crispus Attucks being changed to junior high schools, there were several new arrivals to Howe High School, plus the arrival of new freshmen. Also with the changing of Crispus Attucks High School, the students who attended Attucks part-time for the magnet pro- grams now attend Arsenal Technical High School part-time. This year was one with new teachers and the loss of some. Also, Robert Berry was promoted to director of guidance and Treva Carroll was made chairman of the home economics department in her first year at Howe. The senior class of 1987 was the last class to need 32 credits to graduate, while future classes need 38 credits to graduate. A new addition to Howe High School was aerobics, a class in which the stu- dents keep fit and trim. A very big problem is that so many stu- dents do not givetheirfull potential. Some students quit because they don ' t care or don ' t like it, because of pregnancy, or be- cause of a job. Also, hobbies, personal interests, and jobs, even though they are great to have, sometimes get in the way. There are also the students who like school and have spirit toward it. But there are also the students who only stay in school for something to do and so they can get a good job. According to vice-principal Bruce Beck, academics are down but they will come back again. The 1986-87 school year was a little different from earlier years but with new faces and different attitudes. Among many athletes winning individual recognition was senior Derek Hawthorne, whose honors included two years as all-city quarterback, selection to the UPI all-state team, and membership in the National Honor Society. Sports 45 Young teams perform well All the spring sports program were faced once again with young teams and tough schedules. Despite theiryouth, all teams gave respectable showings with underclassmen taking charge and leading the way. The girls ' softball team faced perhaps the most difficult task of the year. With a young squad and a midyear coaching change, they played inconsistently throughout the season. They played well at times but couldn ' t come up with the big plays when they needed them desperate- ly. Interim coach John Spilker did manage to pull his squad together in time to cap- ture Howe ' s first softball sectional title. First-year track coach James Whisler ' s Lady Hornets were once again a powerhouse but one made up this year of mainly underclassmen. They finished the regular season with a 6-1 record and won all the invitationals they entered ex- cept the Richmond meet. They also cap- tured their fourth straight city title with seniors Kim Jointer and Elva Keaton tak- ing individual firsts in the 100 and long jump. Both relay teams were city champi- ons and held state bests at times during the season. Leading scorer in most meets was sen- ior Jennifer Guthrie, who hurdled and high jumped. Freshman Tiffiani Archey and senior Elva Keaton achieved top individ- ual performances. Archey set a school record at 400 meters and placed seventh in the state meet. Keaton set a school record of 19 ' 4 and placed second in the state meet long jump competition. Keaton was also named outstanding senior fe- male athlete in Marion County by the Mar- ion County Coaches of Girls ' Sports As- sociation. Second-year coach Martin Sam ' s men ' s track team faced problems with in- juries, low grades, and lack of dedication. With a large number of freshmen, they finished with a 2-6 record. The freshmen captured a city freshman title behind indi- vidual champions James Porter (400 me- ters) and Carl McGinty (shot and discus). Upperclassmen performing well included senior Damond Jones, who set a school record in the shot put, and junior Sean Marcum, who won city titles at 800 and 1600 meters. A state meet qualifier as a sophomore, Marcum pulled a hamstring in the sectional and advanced only as far as the regional round. Veteran coach Ron Finkbiner ' s girls ' tennis team had an 1 1-8 record and won the IPS Invitational. Senior Jill Stewart held the number one position throughout the season. Senior Emily Winslow and ju- nior Diane Miller were also major contrib- utors to the winning record. The men ' s golf team improved to a 7-6 record under new coach Bill Smith. They placed second in the IPS Invitational and sixth in the city meet. Top performers were freshman Tony Dean and senior John Knorr. With a young team and one of the toughest schedules in the area, coach Errol Spears ' baseball squad compiled an 8-13 record. Leadership came from senior catcher Paul Smith and power hit- ter Darrin Litteral. Hornet pitching was led by juniors Jeff Spargur and Brian Haw- kins. Spring Sports 57 Young talent shows promise Football coach Richard Harpold and his staff entered the 1986 season with a young and talented squad. Led by senior quarterback Derek Hawthorne, an all-city and all-state performer, the varsi- ty finished at .500 with a 5-5 record. Sen- ior wide receiver James Lump Smith and junior defensive end Bruce Sherels were also named to the all-city team. Top individual honors went to Hawthorne (MVP), Sherels (Outstanding Defensive Player), and John Dunz (Best Mental Atti- tude). Edwin Scott and Alonzo Johnson were voted junior and sophomore class MVP ' s respectively. Dunz was chosen outstanding offensive lineman and Mat Slaughter outstanding defensive back. Team accomplishments included sixth place on the all-time Howe passing list. Junior quarterback Keith Blazek led the reserve squad to a perfect 8-0 record and an unofficial city championship which left the coaching staff looking toward next year. Blazek and fellow junior Rod Mar- cum were chosen 1987 captains. A talented freshman football squad posted three shut-outs on their way to a 6-2 record. The Hornet offense was led by outstanding runners Tim Holliday, who was voted freshman MVP, and Daryl Carter. With no seniors on the squad, the girls ' swim team could only post a 3-8 record. Because of their youth, coach Chuck Page set a goal for each girl to better her personal record in each event. He was pleased with the results and felt he had a good nucleus for next year. Junior Jill Fre- derickson was the team ' s MVP. Coach Dave Stewart ' s soccer team, playing one of the hardest schedules in the area, finished with a 2-1 1 record be- hind the leadership of Hyon Kim. Despite their inexperience, they stuck together and were never blown out. Under first-year coaches Joanie Eng- lish and Anna Kidwell, the volleyball squads improved fundamentally through- out the season but managed a varsity re- cord of only 1-13 and a reserve record of 4-10. Both men ' s and women ' s cross country squads went through a down season with incomplete squads preventing them from scoring in any of their meets. Senior Sean Marcum was the top performer, placing second on Howe ' s all-time list and quali- fying for the semi-state. Fall Sports 69 Basketball, Slaughter take titles Sparked by the arrival of Marshall ref- ugee Tracy Avant and Pike transfer Demetrius McGee, coach Jake Thomp- son ' s varsity basketball team rolled to a city title and finished the regular season with a 17-5 record. Seniors Derek Haw- thorne, James Smith, and Mark St. Martin, and Arthur Wright and junior Kenneth Smith provided experience, depth, and versatility. Also contributing in key re- serve roles were juniors John Edmond, Edwin Scott, Charles Brown, and Daymon Gomillia. Going into the sectional, Avant was the team ' s floor leader and leading scorer at more than 15 points a game. Hawthorne, McGee, and Smith also averaged in dou- ble figures. The team ' s only major weak- ness was rebounding as the team lacked height and failed to block out well. The Hornets had drawn Perry Meridian as their first-round opponent, but yearbook deadlines prevented us from covering the tournament. The reserve basketball team, with five returning juniors, was led by Keith Blazek and Dax Gonzalez, whom coach Kevin Johnson called his most consistent play- ers. James Mason led the scorers with a 7.9 average. According to Johnson, sophomore Tony Johnson was the player with the most potential for the future. The freshman basketball team was deep in talent with several players who could develop into leaders in the varsity and reserve ranks. They did, however, play below their potential near the end of the season and finished with a 9-8 record as they lost six of their last seven games. Coach Jim Arvin ' s wrestlers were very young but put out good efforts against more experienced opponents a s they fin- ished the season 3-5-1. Senior standout Mat Slaughter was the team ' s top per- former with a city title and a fourth-place finish in the state meet. He finished his career with a compiled record of 68 wins and 28 losses, which placed him fourth on the Howe career list. Senior Butch Petree also made the all-time top 20 at eleventh place with a record of 48-22-1. Under- classmen performing well included juniors Rod Marcum and Brian McDonald and sophomores Bryan Brooks, Matt Wil- liams, and Alvin Holliday. Coach Otis Curry ' s girls ' varsity bas- ketball team finished with an 1 1-9 record in spite of the loss of three starters be- fore the season began and grade prob- lems which hit the squad later. All-Metro selection Tasha Price, only a junior, led the squad in scoring with a 17.6 average and in steals with 75. Freshman Kim Cross, perhaps the team ' s most consis- tent player the last half of the season, led in rebounding at nearly ten per game and scored the most points of any freshman in Curry ' s seven years as coach. Sopho- more D.J. Givan developed steadily as a ball handler and shooter throughout the season. Except for inconsistency caused by inexperience, Curry was pleased with his team ' s effort and felt next year ' s re- cord would be much better. The girls ' gymnastics team started the season with a good turnout and several experienced athletes but lost several members because of grades and outside problems. It went into the season with only three members, including standout junior Dana Kees. The annual parade started with dry floats and participants, but by the time they arrived at Howe they were drenched and the sophomore theme Storm through the Knights seemed ap- propriate. During halftime ceremonies held in the rain, senior Tasha Price was crowned homecoming queen and Sherri Pollett named first runner-up. The senior float, Bury the Knights, was chosen best with the sophomore float receiving runner-up honors. At the Saturday dance senior Derek Hawthorne was crowned king and junior Rod Marcum was runner-up. Only an unexpected 20-13 loss to Ar- lington in overtime put a damper on the weekend. Others don ' t realize the aches and pains. I enjoy cheerleading because I sincerely love Howe. I like to encourage the team to win and other students to participate. I don ' t deny the pleasure of being recognized. I call it a fringe benefit, but one that isn ' t necessary, but what is necessary is get- ting others involved. Seniors 107 Choosing a play for this year ' s senior play was a tough choice. Neverthe- less, Fred Carmichael ' s More than Meets the Eye was the final choice of director sponsor Greg Shelton. The play was a big success with Howe ' s audience. Success did not come from the great talent displayed on stage but from all the behind-the-scenes work. This year more than ever, the play was advertised all around the school and on the morning announcements weeks be- fore the play was presented. This seemed to attract a larger audience. The play deals with a struggling writer named Stan (Guy Booher) who has earned fame and fortune by writing chil- dren ' s novels under the name of Grandma Letty. But now he ' s trying to write serious novels and is having a difficult time be- cause of his alter-ego Grandma. He tries to keep his identity a secret but eventual- ly gives up and spills the beans. With excellent performances in key roles by seniors Angie Bailey, Dennis Trinkle, Jon Mertz, Elyce Meyer, and Steve Johnson and juniors Guy Booher, Evelyn Winslow, and Kathy Miley, the play was warmly received by the audiences. Senior Play 109 Council works on spirit Before school began, members of the student council met and discussed goals for the year. The funny thing was that we all decided on one goal, to try to improve school spirit. We wanted the stu- dents to get involved in school activities because we believe people who are in- volved are the ones with spirit. School spirit is more than rooting on your school ' s football or basketball team. It ' s caring enough to get involved and help your school. Everyone has an opin- ion, from the littlest freshman to the big- gest senior. Everybody counts. This is why my theme for the year was Every- body Counts. Students often complain they don ' t like the way things are done. Well, if you ' re one of those, you have a chance to change it. Get involved and change it yourself. Staff 147 ' New look ' marks ' 87 school year When the end of schools rolls around, the seniors are ecstatic and at the same time sad and sentimental because both good and bad times make our high school careers a great, one-time experience. The 1986-87 school year was one of many changes and it helped to put things in a more balanced perspective. New stu- dents helped Howe to expand and be- come stronger in both academics and sports. New teachers also added new life to stagnant activities. Nineteen-eighty-seven will always be remembered because of all the changes that gave Howe its New Look. staffers work harder under pressure Sitting and working in Room 30 early Saturday morning was never my idea of glory. When I first heard I was going to be editor of the yearbook, I didn ' t know whether to cry because of the enormous demand to get the yearbook out on time or else! or to jump up and down with joy because I wanted to show that this year ' s staff could beat the odds. My main goal all year was the day I would see all the seniors in this school remembering the good times of their graduation year in June and not a year later. Our major problem in meeting the goal was lack of numbers and exper- ience. Having only eight people on the staff with some not working up to their full potential put much strain on the ones who worked hardest. Everyone had to push someone else, some more than others, but this persistence was a big reason the yearbook would be delivered on time. Second-year staff members Sean Mar- cum and Crystal Campbell agreed, how- ever, that this year ' s staff was all around better than last year and more effi- cient. There are so many people I want to thank. Most of all I want to thank all the people who questioned and bugged me about when the yearbook was coming out. I think that pressure was the pres- sure that made me work harder and push the staff to work harder. I wanted to hold my head up high with the rest of the staff and say, This is a great and on-time yearbook. Thanks.
