' Guys and Dolls ' hit on Howe stage Damon Runyan ' s Broadway characters came to life on the Howe stage on March 21 and 22 as the music department presented Guys and Dolls, another in a long line of suc- cessful spring musicals. Small but enthusiastic audiences sat enthralled both evenings as di- rector Tom Lewis ' s inexperienced cast showed the results of weeks of intensive re- hearsals. There were flashes of brilliance as Nathan Detroit Guy Booher, Miss Adelaide Regina Garza, Sky Masterson Steve Rubick, and Miss Sarah Brown Evelyn Winslow took shape on stage. Successful performances were even more rewarding because numerous problems had plagued the cast through the weeks of plan- ning and rehearsal. First, as always, was the limited talent pool available for amateur actors. A school of 1,600 doesn ' t have as many tal- ented people as it did when it contained a thousand more students. Besides the lack of stage experience as this year ' s choir was youn- ger than usual. In addition, there was the con- tinuing problem of poor attendance at rehears- al. Cast members simply don ' t seem as dedi- cated as they were before the days of widespread student jobs. Besides jobs, many cast members were also deeply involved in other school activities and had to split their time between activities. Nearly everyone in the cast seemed ideally suited to his role as director Lewis did his usual masterful job of casting young talents. Despite attendance problems everyone seemed made for his role by performance night. Few will forget the off-and-on romance of Guy Booher and Regina Garza as Nathan Detroit and Miss Adelaide, who have been engaged for fourteen years. Nor could they forget the performances of Steve Rubick as the seemingly self-assured gambler Sky Masterson and Evelyn Winslow as the inhibited Salvation Army worker Miss Sarah Brown. As always, the cast seemed to overcome its problems on production nights. Both cast and audience were given unforgettable exper- iences.
