' ' No Work! No Win! ' ' Gymnastics Win. The 1975 girls gymnastics team, sec- ond in the state in ' 74, have worked hard to be number one this year. The desire to work and win and a great deal of talent were the special qualities of the team. Despite use of the gym by two other teams after school, the girls worked every night and on weekends perfecting routines on balance beam, uneven bars, vaulting, and floor exercise. As a whole, the team was both bal- anced and highly competitive. Many girls were high scorers during the sea- son. The strongest event was the un- even bars with seniors Jan Frick, Cathy McAtee and Suzie Lawrence and ju- niors Susie Lovell and Teresa Cobb competing. Seniors Syndii DeFur and Jan Jones and junior Georgia Solberg were strong on the balance beam. Susie Lovell was outstanding in vaulting and is expected to be among the best in all- around competition next year. Georgia Solberg and Gerri Simmons showed tal- ent in floor exercise, but the team suf- fered in this event from cramped prac- tice facilities and lack of depth. This year, the team welcomed back Miss Jan Brown, a long-time coach, to help former Howe student Mrs. Mari- lyn Reinhardt. Both coaches look for- ward to continuing the Howe tradition of winning gymnastics team in newer facilities next year despite losing many strong seniors.

The 1974-75 swim team was differ- ent from last year ' s in many respects. There was no getting up at the crack of dawn to make swim practice at 6:30 a.m. The team practiced at 4:30 in the afternoon at Forest Manor Middle School. This was the first year that the boys and girls teams swam varsity. Both had separate schedules and were considered full IHSAA teams. Many records were set this year: Greg Crooks in the 50, 100 and 26o-yard freestyles and in the 100 butterfly; Duane Richey in the 100 backstroke and breaststroke; and Dave Wente in the 200 individual medley. For the girls new records were set by Rob Williams in the 200 and 400 freestyle; Janice Wiggins in the 50 and 100 freestyle; and Sherri Boltz in the 50 and 100 breaststroke. The team put forth all their effort to make this a great year. With the help of Coach Jessup the swimmers had their best times ever. Despite their short existence the swimmers have built an excellent future for Howe swimming.
