Freshmen and Reserves Win This year the freshman basketball team had a new coach Bill Smith, a former Howe athlete. The team had several outstanding scorers, rebounders and ball handlers. They were very com- petitive as players, as friends and as classmates. According to Coach Smith, The ability of the freshman squad to perform the uncoachable phases of bas- ketball seemed to be one of the strong points of the year. Like the freshman team, the reserve team was under a new coach. Mr. Larry Humes commented on the team, saying they worked well together and were willing to do the best job for the team and not for personal glory. The team had a very fine record this year. Lead- ing scorer was Ray Littleton, who aver- aged 15 points a game, with Mark Gil- lespie and Howard Long averaging 10 points a game. Leading rebounders were Ray Littleton and Howard Long with 10 and 9 rebounds a game respectively.

This year was a turning point for basketball at Howe. It has been severa ' years since Howe has had a winning team, but this year has been a big improvement. One characteristic of the team was that they always gave highly regarded teams a tough game. Howe lost to Law- rence Central, Franklin Central and Tech— all undefeated and state-ranked when we played them— by a total of eight points. Our finest victories were over Warren Central and Shortridge. These early wins were important be- cause they convinced the team of their ability to win. Tony Pennington, Tom Kaye, Jim Fair and Dennis Moore were quick, sharp-shooting guards and made up a backcourt that was exciting to watch. The aggressive front line was made up of senior Ken Parker and juniors Kevin Johnson and Evan Pritz. Key re- serves were Tom Balentine, Wayne Munchel and Jim Holly. Although the accomplishments did not match the potential, the team took a big step in the right direction by changing the attitude of being content with losing which had seemed a big problem in the past. This was the team ' s most important accomplish- ment, and many feel it will prove to be the first step toward a new era of win- ning for Howe basketball. A.
