The 1973 Howe girls track team added two meets to their busy schedule last year. Competing against the toughest city schools and two county schools, the girls tallied a fine record of 5-3. This was one of Howe ' s biggest girls track teams with 22 members competing in 12 different events. In the city meet the 880 medley relay team of Marj- Wood, Carrie Shepard, Carol McCrae, and Sue Layman placed sixth. Tammy Lannom took second in the Softball throw and Margaret Thornton was third against a tough field. Carol McCrae won fourth place in the running long jump with Mary Wood a close sixth. Howe qualified four tracksters for the sectionals with long jumper Carol McCrae advancing to the regionals. Beth Strickland, a fine 440 runner, was chosen by her teammates as the Best Mental Attitude award winner. Carol McCrae was chosen Most Valuable Player. The boys track team had a record of 5-5 despite injuries early in the season. Captain Mike Privette and Gary Selke pulled leg muscles during a strenuous practice and were out for much of the season. But the remainder of the team did well and three new records were set during the season. Roger Wright set an all-time Howe record for the two mile at 9:30.7. John Scharbrough set a fresh- man record of 11 feet 6 inches in the pole vault, and Paul Harper ran the freshman mile in 4:45.3. The distance runners, John Adams, Roger Wright, Mike Privette, and Jim Rettig, had a ven, ' successful season. Greg Mathias was the team ' s best shot putter and discus thrower and scored 61 points during the season. Mike Privette was awarded the Best Mental Attitude honor and Roger Wright was voted Most Valuable Player. A. Greg Mathias wins up to let the discus fly. B. Girls track team: front. Chris Wilkins.
