On a lazy day in summer, it is nice to sit back and open the yearbook to look over the pictures of old friends, check how the football season went, or find the last act of the musical. The extra- curricular activities as well as the different departments are included in any good yearbook. High school is sometimes said to be the best four years of a person ' s life. It may be so, but first a person has to make memo- ries to have memories. Through learning, writing and doing, a person can develop an insight as to how his world will be in the future. A year- book helps the raemories be printed indelibly forever. tq - ' %JI3fe WHERE WE A -4 H Tl v. RE HEADING FAC Class of ' 75 Seniors have traditionally had special activities and privileges given them. These include -such things as senior plays, dress-up and dress-down days, pie-eating contests, tricycle races, and the option of graduating early in the year. Seniors are elected to important places for their last year at Howe: stu- dent council offices, class offices. Na- tional Honor Society offices. These are the best four years of your life . . . . Not only seniors but all students have heard that familiar phrase over and over, but it still holds true to form. These are the years of the big decisions about future, family and feelings. Senioritis, however, occurs in even the best of us. In some it happens during the middle of the senior year, the feeling that one is just a number, a machine doing the same boring thing every single day. In some more ad- vanced cases, the symptoms can begin to show as early as the last half of the junior year. Some have found a remedy in third-year graduation. For those who finish the four-year program, there is the June commencement. Many want to get a head start on jobs. Others want to squeeze all they can from their final year. All have gained from their years at Howe. SaTtdi Stepp on Fifties day. Joan Bergan Carolyn Bernd Kevin Branham Marie Brinson Theresa A. Bronstrup Pi Angela L. Class Counselors Link Four Years Rex Anderson, Freshman Counselo John Trinkle, Sophomore Counselor Underclassmen Hold School Together Much of a yearbook is devoted to se- liors, but school life is made up of the activities of underclassmen as well as seniors. Juniors, sophomores and fresh- men have to pass the same courses, and some new ones too, as seniors. To the freshman school may look like four years of continuous grind, but soph- omores have adjusted to it somewhat and juniors are just starting to become swamped in the morass of paperwork and tests associated with graduating and applying for jobs or college. But in spite of the sometimes apparent hope- lessness, most of these underclassmen will one day be seniors also. - ' •■ ■■ V - ij | Hf! ' H k L 1 B A. We Can Make it Happen. ' ' A new spirit was felt in this year ' s Student Council. The Council still presented the traditional social events but the real emphasis was placed on being a voice of the student body. The Council set many objectives at the start of the year. We wanted to es- tablish open communication between the students and the faculty. Commu- nication with one another, we feel, is essential in a well-adjusted school. We wanted the Council to be a student or- ganization, truly representing the stu- dents. We also wanted to show that Howe students can be mature enough to handle new privileges. The Custodian and Cafeteria Ladies Recognition Days, the Bachelor Sur- vival Course, the student-teacher meet- ings, the numerous questionnaires, and the many projects such as the juke bo.x and the I.D. cards were all positive steps toward reaching our objectives. We were very busy with problems this year. With every project came one or more problems. The Council was busy with projects such as the Ameri- can Lung Association, homecoming ac- tivities, the Brown and Gold, sock-hops and many more. Probably the most re- warding project was the Christmas party at the Marion County Home for the Aged. One of the things we really stressed to the representatives was their impor- tance to the student body. In a school such as Howe, with over 2,000 students, some sort of student voice is needed. Because the student body elects other students to the Council, these represen- tatives should act as the voice of their homerooms to both the Student Council and the administration. The Student Council should function for the stu- dents, not in spite of them. As the Council looks back on the year of 1974-75, we hope to have cleared the way for future councils to better serve the student body. We hope future coun- cils can benefit from our successes and mistakes. I feel very fortunate to have served as this year ' s president. I am indebted to the Council, Mr. Tout and the admin- istration, and the teachers for all their help and support. All were extremely generous with their time and energy. I am confident that future presidents will enjoy the school that I was fortu- nate enough to have served. At the beginning of the year, I said, We can make it happen. With the help of the students, the teachers and the administration, we have made many things happen at Howe this year. Thomas A. Barnard for the 1974-75 Student Council A. Our Nameless Backers Many people we never see or rarely know by name help to make our school what it is. Our parents make us what we are. In turn many of them help to make Howe the school it is by in- volvement in groups like the PTA and 400 Club which support the school with- out the recognition they deserve. We can picture a few of them in action and thank them for what they do but can ' t possibly show all or name all. Some, such as the cafeteria workers, we can picture without naming because there are so many. Others, our custodians and security personnel, we can ' t even pic- ture because of the hours they work. We dedicate these pages to those nameless many who helped to make Howe the school it was in 1974-75. mr EMICS • ' i strfsaigu . The first few weeks of the freshman year can be confusing. Choosing majors and minors, trying to get the right teachers and looking for easy credits is an imposing task, and a mistake may mean hours in the counselor ' s office. Then when you get your schedule, you find out that you are signed up for Rus- sian 13 and seven study halls. All is not lost, however, and you finally manage to get the proper courses, lunch with all your friends and a job as teacher aide to get out of study hall. Of course, there are problems that can strike anyone from freshman to se- nior. Lockers that won ' t open, getting caught in the restroom (but we weren ' t smoking), and getting cut slips from classes you aren ' t even in will continue all through high school. With time you will gain experience in what teachers to avoid in the halls when you don ' t have a pass and what teachers will pro- vide you with a pass when they don ' t even know where you are going. By the time you are a senior you learn to look self-confident and intent on your purpose when roaming the halls, so nobody bothers to stop you. You discover courses like Introductory Math 9 that will earn easy credits with no effort, or you have found your role as a scholar. You have also earned a reputation, either good or bad, that there is no use trying to live down now. Their first performance was with the many other high school choirs of the city at the Market Square Arena dedi- cation ceremony. Next came the Christmas programs: the Irvington Community Sing, Christmas on the Circle, an assembly for the student body, and a special performance at the Education Center. Then came second semester and the annual musical, Kismet, one of the most difficult musicals to perform. In May the music department presented two music festivals, one instrumental and the other vocal. At these perfor- mances advanced students received let- ters or pins for their participation in choir, ensembles or concert clubs. Madrigals and Ensembles A madrigal is a short medieval lyric of love. The madrigal singers of the sixteenth century traveled from village to village performing for landlords and kings. Our madrigals travel from church to church, in an effort to bring the madrigal alive in 75. The Madrigal Singers ' season of the year is Christ- mas. Churches all over the city invite the Madrigals to perform the tradi- tional feast, vifhere these talented young people demonstrate the six- teenth century dances, songs, and skits. The Ensembles, unlike the Madrig- als, sing the songs of today. All through the year the Girls and Boys Ensembles perform for the regularly scheduled Howe events and for many other places such as the Convalescent Center, the Gift and Hobby Show, and the various feeder schools to instill interest in the music department. ill Friedlii.Dan Harkii A. English The English Department continues to flourish with the use of phase-elec- tives. New electives were offered as well as the older ones. These courses give the students an opportunity to branch away from the traditional English format and concentrate on par- ticular areas of interest. Among the newest electives established was the Performing Arts class taught by Mrs. Baker. This class is designed for the ad- vanced drama students who enjoy per- forming before various audiences. Par- ticipating students are selected through auditions. Visuals was another new course, giving the student a chance to understand the processes in- volved in the actual filming of pro- grams. The student also learns about and experiments with cameras. Mr. Bruce Beck, department head, aids in developing the kinds of interesting class electives which appeal most to the student body. A. Each program con- sists of grammar, actual speech and history. Students use the language lab to assist them in understanding their second languages. Among the activities of the year was a trip to La Tour res- taurant by the French classes for a French meal. Mr. Raymond Hulce, de- partment head, sent three of his ad- vanced Spanish students, Elaine Lage- naur, Terrj- Bevis, and Judi Rollins to participate in the I.L ' . Honors Program for Foreign Study Abroad. They spent a summer in Mexico using only the Spanish language. Science Department The Howe Science Department has undergone a great change in the past year. Not only has it initiated new courses, but is is becoming a depart- ment where students are allowed to work on their own and work at their own speed. Many classes, especially those in chemistry, are allowed to do so. This new method seemed to work well for the students really enjoyed class. A. Mr. Jessup helps students understand their worksheets. New materials are being tried in three classes of General Math 1 and 2. Howe was one of the few public schools selected for this program. A new teach- ing system, also being tried in the four- teen algebra classes, is a semi-individ- ualized method. Overall, the Howe math department has done a good job. Nearly 1300 students are presently en- rolled in various math classes within the department. stLtsTpLt ;nTIf;ra: ' :a?tS Social studies Department success of the English oriented history classes. American Studies began in the 1973-74 school year and combines U.S. History and English, giving the stu- dents credit in both classes. World Studies also has the same advantage of double credit. The main event of the 1974-75 year was, of course, the mock elections. Stu- dents are organized into precincts, dis- tricts, and counties. These groups are then organized into two parties, the Nationalists and the Federalists. The students themselves campaign and vote as in a regular national election. Students and teacher alike enjoy their history classes during this month-long break in routine. A. Mr. Spears discusses a topic with stitdents in his Is- sues and Values class. B. Being a dedicated Nationalist, Cathy McAtee makes a sign to support her party. C. Students participate in a discussion during a Social Studit D. American Studies class caught in action E. All activities had to be done in street clothes and tennis shoes. At the beginning of the second semes- ter, though, the girls locker rooms were opened. The department had one new teacher and one teacher return. Mr. Larry- Humes taught boys phys. ed. classes and was also JV basketball coach. Miss Janice Brown returned to Howe after a year ' s leave of absence. A. The first thing a freshman phys. ed. class does every day is exercise. B. One of the favorite activities of boys gym classes is basketball. C. A freshman practices a neiv exercise. D. Practice makes perfect on the parallel bars. Industrial Arcs The Industrial Arts Department, like most other departments, has been changed in almost every respect this year. There have been new students, new classrooms, new equipment, and a new teacher, Mr. Paul Schneeman. Pro- duction and practice in all divisions had a late start because of construction delays, but students and teachers adapted well to poor conditions. The first to enter their new facilities were drafting and printing. Woods and met- als moved later in the year. As the year ended, plans were being completed for courses in electronics and auto mechan- ics for the new areas of the department. ■ .4. Graphics arts students iiidiistrimisly set type. B. Drafting courses are popular. C. Mr. Nave illustrates offset to students. D. Bruce Lynette carefully operates jigsaw. E. Freshmen enjoy beginning printing courses. F. The new construction this year didn ' t miss the art department, ex- plained Mrs. Duncan. The art depart- ment has a new image which makes it look hke an art department. The facili- ties are beginning to fit our changing, challenging times. The art department has entered the city and state contests, The biggest contest is the 500 Art Festival. The art- work goes to the Convention Center for the final showing. The Scholastic Art Contest of 1975 was another of the bigger contest. Something new happened in the form of a program for the borrowing of artwork. The teachers ask the students for the loan of their personal artwork for a period of about six months. This program differs from the old one in that the student is sure of getting his donated work back. Home Economics Department Business Department The Business Department of Howe is a verj ' successful part of the school. Students who major in business here are in great demand by employers in the area. Courses that are offered to as- sist the students are typing, shorthand, clerical practice, business machines, and many others. New courses are added as our business department ex- pands to include more students. 1 A. Beth Bach assists another classmate ni preparing to cook. B. Oh that tastes good! C. Howe ' s JROTC unit has been ex- tremely active this year, not only with its usual schedule but with its many so- cial functions and public services. The newest addition to the corps is the girls drill team. In their first year of competition, they have already dem- onstrated a great amount of talent. With the promise that most of the girls will be back next year, we can look for- ward to a squad competitive with the best in the state. Our boys drill team was not idle this year either. They com- peted across the state with many types of routines, working hard all year. The cadets were also given the chance to at- tend practical exercises at summer camp and on a trip to Fort Knox. This has been a rewarding year for JROTC, and they hope for an even bet- ter one next year. ROTC Has Busy Year Cooperative Office Education A. One of the major changes at Howe in recent years has been the rapid growth of work-study programs. In these pro- grams students spend half a day in school and the remainder working at a paid job for which they also receive aca- demic credit. They are able to apply job skills for which they have been trained in school. Sponsored by the Business Depart- ment and directed by Mrs. Yvonnne Perry, the Cooperative Office Educa- tion program trains students in the more practical skills required by a vari- ety of office jobs. Advanced business courses are a prerequisite for this pro- gram. Students are placed in jobs throughout the Marion County area. Distributive Education Distributive Education students work at various jobs in the retailing field. Their responsibilities include al- most all areas of getting merchandise to the public. Sales and cashiering are only a few of their jobs. The program is coordinated bv Mrs. Deborah Bareford. ICT Howe ' s smallest work-study pro- gram, Industrial Cooperative Training, is under the direction of Mr. Jack Law- son. This program places advanced in- dustrial arts students in less hazardous areas of industry, with most working in printing and light industries such as machine shops. This valuable program has been limited in enrollment by the few jobs available and by small depart- ment facilities but has a promising fu- ture with the expanded industrial arts program. A. Honor Societies Pen Points Exploratory Teaching The exploratory teaching program, sponsored by Mr. Donald Glenn, al- lowed 25 Howe students to get an in- side look at the teaching profession. The students, most of whom returned to their former grade schools, helped their assigned teachers grade papers, tutor students and conduct special projects. Not only did the cadet teach- ers learn by doing but they were re- quired to turn in a biweekly report on some facet of modern education. Quill and Scroll is the honor society for publications. It includes members of Toiver, HiUtopper. and Pen Points staffs in the upper third of their class. Pen Points is a magazine of student writing and artwork sponsored by the English department with the coopera- tion of the art department and the printing staff. Ann Fulk is the editor, and Laura Cox is the assistant editor. Ann is the only member to sen-e three consecutive years on Pen Points. Mr. Dinkens is the advisor of the publica- tions, aided by Mrs. Neal and Miss Smith. Juniors are eligible for the National Honor Society if they rate in the top ten per cent of their class and have a B average. P? ' ' t -Ai ' BM -. Senior Play f « r ■ ' - « The class of ' 75 was the first to make a change in the traditional senior play. The seniors presented their Night of One Acts December twelfth at 8:00. At this moment the months of rehears- als came to an end, and the actual show was polished for audience approval. The production opened with a short drama, Undertmc. involving the life of an elderly lady and her jealousy for her married step-sister. The second play was Get Thee A Wife, a comedy take- off from Shakespeare ' s Much Ado Ahoxtt Nothing. Mrs. Harriette Baker directed the production with the assistance of stu- dent director Candy Davis. The Best P.R.V. in Years The 1975 P.R.V. was filled with mu- sic, comedy and meaning. Mrs. Ann Williams again put together an ex- cellent show with the help of faculty, stage and sound crews, and the student body. Musical Kismet, from the Arabic word for fate, is a complex musical about a poor beggar who gains wealth and fame in the space of a day. The plot centers on Hajj the poet; his daugh- ter; her lover, the prince; her hus- band, the wicked Wazir; and the Wa- zir ' s wife of wives, Lalume, who seeks the affections of the poet. More than 200 people are involved in the production: at least 70 from the choir and concert clubs, 30 from the orchestra, 25 from the stage and paint crews, 20 from the make-up crew, 15 faculty and many others. Presenting a show appears to in- volve only the people one actually sees on the stage for the final per- formance, but to look backstage one couldn ' t even begin to count. All of these people stay for many hours af- ter school, on Saturdays, and on holi- days. Many come before 7:00 in the morning. They must feel it is really worthwhile because Howe has a rep- utation for putting on the best musi- cals around. Howe ' s music teachers and students have earned the school a great deal of prestige by packing the public into a 1,200 seat audito- rium for several performances. Finally it is the night of the show. Everyone is excited, the bustle back- stage is at its peak and the emotions of the cast are a mixture of total fright and the knowledge that they perform it well. The curtain rises and a few hours later it is all over. Everyone is disappointed because he will never be in that exact situation again. The cast party, filled with tears, laughs, and songs, follows the final performance. The Hilltopper would like to pay a tribute to Frank S. Pop Watkins for 35 years of dedication to Howe High School as teacher and depart- ment chairman. Mr. Watkins was the director of the first musicals ever presented in the present audi- torium, built in the early 1960 ' s. He is known by all to be devoted to mu- sic and to youth interested in music. Pop has brought the wonder of mu- sic to Howe High School and done much to bring the image of Howe to the community in a positive way. A. Intramurals Fill Need for Many The intramural leag ues in bowling and basketball serve many purposes. They provide recreation for students and serve as an outlet for those who lack either the time or the special tal- ent for varsity competition. They also help to condition athletes whose major sports are out of season. Perhaps the high point of the intramural program is the rivalry between the up- perclassmen and the faculty team in the basketball league. This rivalry reaches its peak in the annual senior- faculty game at the close of varsity basketball competition. JZ r 1 ' J. A, Something Special A. Brenda Bohnenkamp conducts a re- search sitrvey. Certainly not the girls tennis team. For the past two years their record has been ten wins and no losses, capturing the city title as well. Along with the seven city trophies, the girls also won the sec- tionals taking four trophies. Lisa Scott and Mimi Boulais won in singles and Kathy Hinch and Becky Wilson in dou- bles. The four girls then advanced to the regionals where Lisa Scott took second place. This made her eligible for state competition. The team achieved their fantastic record by practicing every -day after school at Ellenberger Park or ih the gym if the weather was bad. With great team spirit and lots of help from Coach Wilkes the girls hope to have a better year if that is possible. 1. Se7iwr Kathy Hinch readies herself for a back- hand volley. 2. The fall team was the strongest ever to represent Howe. Senior Mark Thomas and junior Phil Worthington were superb in tight matches. Mark has won sixty-one matches and lost only seven over the four years he has been at Howe. Bill Bankston, Tom Barnard and Dave DeHerdt along with Mark and Phil were among the top in the state, commented Coach Finkbiner. The freshmen and junior varsity in- dicated great strength for Howe in coming years. They included Matt Langenbacher, Gerry Boulais, Alan Guthrie, Brian Miller and Steve Barnard.  i A. Pitching was the outstanding feature of the season. Steve Roberson, senior, had a fine 6-4 record, getting the call against the toughest teams. He was one of the best city pitchers. His earned run average was a verj- fine 1.03. Senior Rusty Eads led the team in most areas of hitting with a .320 average and 24 hits. Larry McCormick was team captain and led the team in RBI ' s. The team had sev- eral outstanding underclassmen. Doug McGuire played catcher and outfielder, Bernie Mackell and Kevin Johnson pitched and played first base, and Jim Holly played second base. Jim Holly stated, The team this next season can be very good. Most of the guys have been playing together for years and with a little help from Coach Spears and a lot of teamwork, we can do a lot. The 1973 Howe girls track team added two meets to their busy schedule last year. Competing against the toughest city schools and two county schools, the girls tallied a fine record of 5-3. This was one of Howe ' s biggest girls track teams with 22 members competing in 12 different events. In the city meet the 880 medley relay team of Marj- Wood, Carrie Shepard, Carol McCrae, and Sue Layman placed sixth. Tammy Lannom took second in the Softball throw and Margaret Thornton was third against a tough field. Carol McCrae won fourth place in the running long jump with Mary Wood a close sixth. Howe qualified four tracksters for the sectionals with long jumper Carol McCrae advancing to the regionals. Beth Strickland, a fine 440 runner, was chosen by her teammates as the Best Mental Attitude award winner. Carol McCrae was chosen Most Valuable Player. The boys track team had a record of 5-5 despite injuries early in the season. Captain Mike Privette and Gary Selke pulled leg muscles during a strenuous practice and were out for much of the season. But the remainder of the team did well and three new records were set during the season. Roger Wright set an all-time Howe record for the two mile at 9:30.7. John Scharbrough set a fresh- man record of 11 feet 6 inches in the pole vault, and Paul Harper ran the freshman mile in 4:45.3. The distance runners, John Adams, Roger Wright, Mike Privette, and Jim Rettig, had a ven, ' successful season. Roger Wright, the team ' s most valuable runner, was the individ- ual city and sectional champ and went on to the state finals. He set several school and course records during the season. John Adams and Ray Janes both agreed in saying, In our four years at Howe, this is the best cross countrv team we ' ve had. Freshman and Reserve Football The reserve football team did not have one of the best seasons ever, but they had an acceptable year. Some out- standing players were quarterback Mark Collins, running backs Mike Wil- son and Doug Privette, tackle Bill Ger- alds, and guard Elige McDaniels. The reserve team may not have had a per- fect record, but they had sportsman- ship. The coaches feel the team mem- bers learn a lot in football that couldn ' t be taught in the classroom— loyalty, re- sponsibility and working well with others. The freshman football team had a 5-3 season, one of the best in years. The team ' s hard work paid off in experi- ence and skill for future participation in varsity sports. .4. These were the reactions of junior Ray Littleton and senior Bruce Ly- nette when asked about the football season. The varsity team ended the season with a record of five wins and five losses. Both of the players felt the team had a lot of spirit and desire to be state champs but just didn ' t reach the goals they had set. There were, however, several out- standing players on the team. Dave Detamore was selected for the all-state team as kicker. Bernie Mackell and Dan Dobson were both named the all-city team, while sophomore Jim Fair was given an honorable mention for all-cit} ' . Ray Littleton summarized the season with, All I can say is, we have four- teen lettermen returning next year and we hope to get the job done for the fans. It has been severa ' years since Howe has had a winning team, but this year has been a big improvement. One characteristic of the team was that they always gave highly regarded teams a tough game. Howe lost to Law- rence Central, Franklin Central and Tech— all undefeated and state-ranked when we played them— by a total of eight points. Our finest victories were over Warren Central and Shortridge. These early wins were important be- cause they convinced the team of their ability to win. Tony Pennington, Tom Kaye, Jim Fair and Dennis Moore were quick, sharp-shooting guards and made up a backcourt that was exciting to watch. The aggressive front line was made up of senior Ken Parker and juniors Kevin Johnson and Evan Pritz. Key re- serves were Tom Balentine, Wayne Munchel and Jim Holly. Although the accomplishments did not match the potential, the team took a big step in the right direction by changing the attitude of being content with losing which had seemed a big problem in the past. This was the team ' s most important accomplish- ment, and many feel it will prove to be the first step toward a new era of win- ning for Howe basketball. A. The team had several outstanding scorers, rebounders and ball handlers. They were very com- petitive as players, as friends and as classmates. According to Coach Smith, The ability of the freshman squad to perform the uncoachable phases of bas- ketball seemed to be one of the strong points of the year. Like the freshman team, the reserve team was under a new coach. Mr. Larry Humes commented on the team, saying they worked well together and were willing to do the best job for the team and not for personal glory. The team had a very fine record this year. Lead- ing scorer was Ray Littleton, who aver- aged 15 points a game, with Mark Gil- lespie and Howard Long averaging 10 points a game. Leading rebounders were Ray Littleton and Howard Long with 10 and 9 rebounds a game respectively. A. Reserve team: first row. Mark McChtre, Richard Emersun, Mike Wilson. Glen Cherry; second row. Much strenuous work has really paid off for this year ' s grapplers. The junior varsity team won the city title this year, the first time a Howe wres- tling team has captured the city title. JV placers were Mark Hill, Chris Roeschlein, Jim Lowe, Hal Page, Steve Massey, Kevin Moorhead, Russell Byrd, and Steve Wilson. Howe also had three city champs: Dana Craig, freshman; Steve Massey, junior varsity; and Greg McAfee, varsity. There was no getting up at the crack of dawn to make swim practice at 6:30 a.m. The team practiced at 4:30 in the afternoon at Forest Manor Middle School. This was the first year that the boys and girls teams swam varsity. Both had separate schedules and were considered full IHSAA teams. Many records were set this year: Greg Crooks in the 50, 100 and 26o-yard freestyles and in the 100 butterfly; Duane Richey in the 100 backstroke and breaststroke; and Dave Wente in the 200 individual medley. For the girls new records were set by Rob Williams in the 200 and 400 freestyle; Janice Wiggins in the 50 and 100 freestyle; and Sherri Boltz in the 50 and 100 breaststroke. The team put forth all their effort to make this a great year. With the help of Coach Jessup the swimmers had their best times ever. Despite their short existence the swimmers have built an excellent future for Howe swimming. ' ' No Work! No Win! ' ' Gymnastics Win. The 1975 girls gymnastics team, sec- ond in the state in ' 74, have worked hard to be number one this year. The desire to work and win and a great deal of talent were the special qualities of the team. Despite use of the gym by two other teams after school, the girls worked every night and on weekends perfecting routines on balance beam, uneven bars, vaulting, and floor exercise. As a whole, the team was both bal- anced and highly competitive. Many girls were high scorers during the sea- son. The strongest event was the un- even bars with seniors Jan Frick, Cathy McAtee and Suzie Lawrence and ju- niors Susie Lovell and Teresa Cobb competing. Seniors Syndii DeFur and Jan Jones and junior Georgia Solberg were strong on the balance beam. Susie Lovell was outstanding in vaulting and is expected to be among the best in all- around competition next year. Georgia Solberg and Gerri Simmons showed tal- ent in floor exercise, but the team suf- fered in this event from cramped prac- tice facilities and lack of depth. This year, the team welcomed back Miss Jan Brown, a long-time coach, to help former Howe student Mrs. Mari- lyn Reinhardt. The volleyball team had a tough year, with a varsity record of 5-6 and a re- serve record of 7-3. The varsity team had only two members, Carol McCrae and Ann White, returning from last year. Lacking experience, they spent many hours practicing to perfect their skills. Coach McMillan introduced many new techniques which the girls worked hard to perfect. The reserve team was made up en- tirely of new players. They improved greatly during the year and showed promise of a better record next year. The team showed high morale de- spite poor attendance at games. In the sectional at North Central, the girls de- feated Scecina 15-4 and 15-6 to advance to the semifinals against eventual champion North Central. They lost a hotly contested pair of games to the champions and ended the season proudly. Behind the Sports Scene A. Coaches: Kneeling, Arvin, Harpold, Spears, Finkbiner, Stutz, P. Hornet Honeys March Through Successful Year This was a year of new experiences for the Hornet Honeys. The number of girls on the squad was raised to forty to give more girls the opportunity to par- ticipate as a drill team member. The squad, led by senior Diane Eden, marched to the tunes of Georgie Girl and Make Me Smile at a half-time show at the Market Square Arena, the first Hornet Honey squad ever to do so. The girls were also able to march in the 500 Festival Parade. The squad also went through a change of sponsors, as Miss Shirley Smith took over the job when Mrs. Barbara Banks gave up teaching at the change of the semester. These things along with summer camp, performing at home football and basketball games, and marching at mi itary meets with the ROTC units made this year hectic but exciting. A.
