emphasis on pastels. Male fashions turned to cuffed pants, flowered shirts, and poor boy vests. The return of the oxford and the rise of the high-heeled shoe joined the boot brigade. Leading the sounds of 72 were such songs as Chuck Berry ' s My Ding-A-Ling, Elton John ' s Crocodile Rock, Summer Breeze by Seals and Crofts and You ' re So Vain performed by Carly Simon. The Godfather and The Valachi Papers, revived the era of the Mafia, while The Posiedon Adventure and Deliverance, both water tragedies, proved to be popular. Some kids supplemented their reading program with The Corn Cob Curtain, a teenage commentary on today ' s society. Going out to get a pizza after the games was part of just messin ' around. Gettin ' the gang together, finding someone to drive and getting there soon enough to get a seat was all part of the fun. Basketball and football games provided a place to go with the gang on weekends. To get out and root for the team was really fun for some, even if we lost. During the week it was harder to find something to do, but wrestling meets, ice skating and just driving around were all ways to get out of the house. Dating was another form of messin ' around. Shows, going out to eat, games, and shopping were things guys and girls could enjoy together.

When they are not at home thinking up ways to aggravate students, many teachers spent time on hobbies, recreation, special interests, volunteer work in the community, and part-time jobs. Building a cottage of their own was Don and Gloria Townsend ' s dream. This dream was fulfilled in the summer of ' 71. The modified A-frame cabin is located in Owen county near Spencer IN. Their one-bedroom two story home had only one fault; they put the bathroom door on upside down. While digging the well, they didn ' t strike oil, but they did strike quicksand. Except for some minor changes, the Townsends are so pleased with the results that they spend every possible weekend at the cottage. Some of the staff members expanded their income by moonlighting on other jobs. Robert King spent his extra time enjoying the congregation at Mount Zion Baptist Church as Assistant Pastor. Justin Rehm earned a little extra pocket money by selling mutual funds. Operating a hotel switch board was Dorothy Smith ' s second job. Alen Miers worked as a security guard here at Howe and also at Ayr-Way. Wallace Smith, custodian, worked as a maintenance man at Indiana National Bank. Fishing is common outdoor sport unless you are like Bill Smith who spends his summers in Northern Michigan studying the feeding habits of the Salvelinus fortnalis, commonly known as the brook trout. He has engaged in this hobby for the past thirty five years. Accepting challenges of any nature is an interest of Errol Spears and Ron Finkbiner. Working as a team, they have been challenged to gourmet cooking and basketball. They defeated the Marshall faculty doubles champions in several matches. Harry Preston and Mark Sutton have challenged Errol and Ron to many bridge games of which both teams have won and lost. Tim Jessup started a cheap
